Match Preview: Motherwell v St Mirren

St Mirren travel to Fir Park tomorrow to face Motherwell in our last match before Christmas.

FORM

Saints were narrowly edged out by Aberdeen last weekend at the Simple Digital Arena.

Stevie May gave the Dons the lead from the penalty spot on the half hour mark. But the Buddies responded in good fashion with Cammy MacPherson scoring his first St Mirren goal just five minutes to level the scores. However, a second half goal from Sam Cosgrove gave the visitors the points.

Well's form over five matches is the same as Saints having won one, drawn one and lost three of their five matches this month.

It started with a 2-0 loss away to Livingston, before a good 1-1 draw at home to Celtic a few days later. There was also 1-0 defeat at Tynecastle against Hearts.

Last weekend Stephen Robinson's side picked up three points on their trip to Perth to face St Johnstone as they came out on top 2-1.

They come into tomorrow's match on the back of a 3-0 loss to Celtic at Celtic Park on Wednesday night.

PREVIOUS

The two sides have met once this season with Motherwell visiting Paisley on Halloween. It was a disappointing night for Saints who fell to a 2-0 loss with goals from David Turnbull and Chris Cadden giving Well the win.

The Buddies last visit to Motherwell was a major disappointment for Saints as the home side ran out 5-0 winners in an all important match.

St Mirren's last win at Fir Park was back in 2011 when a late Michael Higdon goal gave the Buddies a 1-0 victory.

WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN

St Mirren will be looking to stay above bottom side Dundee after the Dens Park club fell to the bottom of the league on goal difference after a 5-1 loss to Aberdeen on Tuesday night.

Three points for Motherwell would see the Lanarkshire side move 12 clear of Saints and potentially Dundee depending on their result away to Celtic.

TEAM NEWS

Saints will still be without Danny Mullen, Kyle Magennis and Gary MacKenzie.

Oran Kearney confirmed to the press yesterday that Paul McGinn will return to the squad.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Aberdeen

St Mirren are back in action at the Simple Digital Arena tomorrow as we host Aberdeen in the Ladbrokes Premiership in the last home game before Christmas.

FORM

The Buddies were left disappointed last weekend following a 3-1 defeat away to Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena. Alfie Jones' first goal in black and white gave Saints a first half lead. But the Lions scored three second half goals to take all three points.

Saints' form has improved in recent weeks taking five points from the last five league matches compared to just four from the previous 12.

Aberdeen's form has been up and down over the past few weeks with three wins and three losses in their previous six matches.

Derek McInnes' side come into tomorrow's match on the back of a last-gasp win over Livingston at Pittodrie on Tuesday night. The Dons had taken the lead through Niall McGinn, but fell behind thanks to goals from Scott Pittman and Jack McMillan. Sam Cosgrove grabbed an equaliser, before youngster Lewis Ferguson secured a 3-2 win in stoppage time.

There was a 2-0 loss for Aberdeen at home to St Johnstone last weekend which came off the back of a 1-0 win at Ibrox against Rangers.

PREVIOUS

Saints have already faced Aberdeen twice this season - both at Pittodrie. Indeed, Saints' three meetings against the Dons in 2018 have all been in the North East.

Only one of those matches has been in the league though - our most recent back in October. Aberdeen ran out comfortable 4-1 winners - scoring three goals in a 15 minute period in the first half

St Mirren last welcomed Aberdeen to Paisley was back in 2015 in the Ladbrokes Premiership. The Dons were 2-0 winners that afternoon thanks to two goals in three minutes from Niall McGinn and Shay Logan.

Saints' last league win over Aberdeen was in July 2011 when Nigel Hasselbaink's second half goal gave St Mirren a 1-0 win.

WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN

St Mirren are looking to bounce back from the disappointment of a loss to Livingston - coupled with Dundee's point against Rangers that saw Saints go bottom for the first time this season.

A win could see Aberdeen move into fourth place in the Ladbrokes Premiership - depending on Hearts and St Johnstone's results.

TEAM NEWS

Danny Mullen and Kyle Magennis after both out with Oran Kearney confirming the pair are likely to be sidelined for a significant period.

The manager also told press that Paul McGinn and Ryan Flynn returned to training yesterday so the pair could come into contention.

Long-term absentee Gary MacKenzie remains out.

Gary Mackay-Steven is still out for the visitors following his injury against Celtic in the Betfred Cup final. Mikey Devlin is also sidelined.

Match Preview: Livingston v St Mirren (8th Dec)

St Mirren are on the road again tomorrow afternoon when they head to the Tony Macaroni Arena to face Livingston for the second time this season.

FORM

After the loss to Hamilton last weekend St Mirren got back on to the plus point tally with a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Easter Road on Wednesday night.

The draw in Edinburgh sees Saints with just one loss in their last four league outings thanks to a win against Hearts in Paisley and draws on the road against Dundee and Hibs.

Wednesday's match at Easter Road saw Saints take the lead twice. The first came in 6 minutes when Adam Hammill netted from 55 yards as he launched his shot from just inside the St Mirren half that flew over the top of the Hibs keeper on its way to the back of the net. The home side pulled level early in the second half through Olly Shaw but Paul McGinn gave Saints back the lead when he headed home a cross from Hammill. Unfortunately the Buddies let the lead slip again when Ryan Porteous netted for Hibs.

Livingston go into tomorrow's game on the back of a 2-0 defeat away to Kilmarnock this past midweek.

The Livi Lions got off to a great start this season that saw them sit in the top six towards the end of October. But their form has got a bit indifferent since then with one win in their last six outings including defeats against St Johnstone (0-1), Hamilton (0-1), Rangers (0-3) and Kilmarnock (0-2) on Wednesday. They did win last weekend thanks to goals from Steve Lawless and Craig Halkett against Motherwell.

PREVIOUS

Tomorrow will be the first meeting between the sides at the Tony Macaroni Arena since last season when Saints went down 4-1, but they did meet earlier this season in Paisley when goals from Jack Hamilton and Alan Lithgow were enough to earn Livi the points.

Last season the four league games between the two sides who were promoted from the Championship saw Saints win twice, Livi once and a no-scoring draw that saw Saints earn the point they needed to lift the Championship trophy.

Over the years the home side in this fixture hasn't normally faired too well and while both Saints and Livi bucked that trend last season, the West Lothian side got it back on track with their win at the Simple Digital Arena on 25th August, Saints will no doubt be looking to reciprocate tomorrow.

WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN

St Mirren are looking for a first away win of the season.

Saints will be hoping to earn the three points as Hamilton face Hibs on Saturday and Dundee face Rangers on Sunday.

A win for Livi could fire them back into the top six as the two teams above them - Aberdeen (2 points ahead) and St Johnstone (3 points ahead) go face to face at Pittodrie tomorrow.

Match Preview: Hibernian v St Mirren

St Mirren travel to Easter Road tonight to face Hibernian for the second time this season.

FORM

It's been a mixed bag for Saints over the last three games with one win, one draw and one defeat.

After a fine 2-0 win over Hibernian's Edinburgh rivals Hearts a little over a week ago, Saints were beaten 3-1 at home against Hamilton on Saturday.

Those two results came after a 1-1 draw away to bottom side Dundee at Dens Park before the international break.

St Mirren had a chance to overtake Hamilton Accies in 10th place on Saturday with a win, but Martin Canning's side came away with the points thanks to goals from Dougie Imrie, Ziggy Gordon and James Keatings. Stephen McGinn scored for the Buddies just before half-time, but it wasn't enough to help Saints take anything from the game.

Hibernian, meanwhile, come into tonight's match looking for their first win since the start of October.

Since a 6-0 win over Hamilton at Easter Road at the beginning on October, Neil Lennon's side have failed to win in six matches.

Four defeats have come at the hands of Kilmarnock (3-0), Aberdeen (1-0), St Johnstone (1-0) and Celtic (4-2), while they've drawn twice - away to Hearts (0-0) and at home to Dundee (2-2).

PREVIOUS

This is St Mirren's first trip to Easter Road since that all important day on May 6th 2017. A 1-1 draw saw the Buddies complete a remarkable escape from relegation to League One.

After sitting nine points adrift at the bottom of the Championship in January, Saints' point at Easter Road that afternoon in May was enough to round off an incredible recovery. Less than a year later the Buddies would be promoted to the Premiership.

The Buddies have already faced Hibernian this season - hosting the Hibees at the Simple Digital Arena in September.

David Gray's 14th minute header gave the Edinburgh side the points in a 1-0 win.

Saints' last win over Hibs came in March 2017 when a Stelios Demetriou double gave the Buddies an all important 2-0 win in Paisley.

WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN

St Mirren are looking for a first away win of the season.

Saints will be hoping for three points on a night when bottom side Dundee host Hamilton at Dens Park.

A win for Hibernian could propel Neil Lennon's side back into the top six depending on results for Aberdeen and Livingston.

TEAM NEWS

Long-term absentee Gary MacKenzie remains out, while the manager told press yesterday that Cody Cooke suffered a knock at the weekend.

Simeon Jackson is suspended following his red card against Hamilton.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Hamilton

St Mirren play host to Hamilton Academical tomorrow in the Ladbrokes Premiership and aim to add another three points following a win over Hearts last weekend.

FORM

Oran Kearney's Buddies come into tomorrow's match on the back of a well deserved 2-0 win over Hearts at the Simple Digital Arena last weekend.

A second-half double from Adam Hammill was enough to earn Saints a first win since the opening day of the season and keep Saints in 11th place with eight points.

Hamilton visit Paisley on the back of two heavy defeats - at home to Celtic and away to St Johnstone.

Accies hosted Celtic at the Hope CBD Stadium last Saturday in an early kick-off. The league leaders had too much for Martin Canning's side as they ran out 3-0 winners. That loss came after a 4-0 defeat against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park before the international break.

Hamilton have picked up a win this month having defeated Livingston 1-0 at the Hope CBD at the start of November. Despite Mickel Miller's late sending off, Mason Bloomfield grabbed an 86th minute winner to earn three points against Gary Holt's Livi side.

PREVIOUS

Saints host Accies looking to make amends for a heavy defeat suffered at the Hope CBD Stadium in September.

Hamilton were too strong for the Buddies that afternoon as a goal from Fredrik Brustad and a Mickel Miller double gave Accies a 3-0 win.

St Mirren did, however, defeat Accies 1-0 on their last visit to Paisley back in 2015. Steven Thompson's second half goal gave Saints the points.

While Saints have won three of the last six at home against Hamilton, Accies did manage to come away from Paisley with a win in the 2014/15 season - Ali Crawford's double giving them a 2-0 win in August 2014.

The Lanarkshire side have come out on top in the previous three meetings between the two - all at Hamilton.

WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN

St Mirren's win over Hearts last week saw the Buddies cut the gap on Hamilton to two points.

A win for Saints would see them leapfrog Accies and move into 10th place. With Dundee not in action this weekend victory would move St Mirren six points clear of the bottom.

Accies, meanwhile, could move five clear of the Buddies if they can take three points in Paisley. Depending on Motherwell's result at away to Livingston, Accies could potentially close the gap on their Lanarkshire rivals to a just a point with a win.

TEAM NEWS

Long-term absentee Gary MacKenzie remains out, while the manager told press yesterday that Ryan Flynn has suffered a broken finger.

Anton Ferdinand missed last weekend's match against Hearts but returned to training this week.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Hearts

St Mirren are back in action following the international break with Craig Levein's Hearts the visitors to the Simple Digital Arena.

FORM

Saints come in to today's match on the back of a 1-1 draw with Dundee at Dens Park two weeks ago.

It was the second point the Buddies have picked up since Oran Kearney's appointment as manager in September.

Simeon Jackson gave St Mirren the lead on 20 minutes when he converted from the penalty spot. But Dundee levelled through Kenny Miller 14 minutes later.

Saints had chances to win the match late on but had to settle for a point that keeps us in 11th above Dundee.

Today's visitors Hearts had been sitting pretty at the top of the league for a number of weeks, but three games without a win saw the Jam Tarts drop to second.

A 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock at Tynecastle before the international break came off the back of a 5-0 loss to Celtic at Celtic Park and a 0-0 draw with Hibernian in the Edinburgh derby.

The Jambos' last win came just over a month ago when they defeated Dundee 3-0 at Dens Park.

PREVIOUS

The Buddies have already faced Hearts this season - losing 4-1 to the Jambos at Tynecastle in September.

Steven Naismith gave the home side an early lead before good work from Cammy Smith brought about an own goal to get Saints level.

Olly Lee put Hearts back in front on the half hour mark and two quick-fire goals just before half-time saw Naismith complete his hat-trick.

This is the first match between the two at the Simple Digital Arena since a 1-1 draw on the final day of the 2013/14 season. Connor Newton gave Saints a first half lead, but Dale Carrick equalised for the visitors early in the second half.

St Mirren are unbeaten at home against Hearts in our last four matches. The 2012/13 season saw Saints win both home matches against the Jambos 2-0. The following season saw both matches end 1-1.

Hearts' last victory in Paisley was in a 2012 Scottish Cup replay where goals from Jamie Hamill and Rudi Skacel saw the Jam Tarts progress.

WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN

Saints could close the gap on 10th place Hamilton to two points with a win - providing Hamilton lose to Celtic in this afternoon's early kick-off.

Should Hamilton take anything from today's match against Celtic, Hearts could return to the top of the league with a win over Saints.

TEAM NEWS

Ryan Edwards is unavailable for St Mirren tomorrow with Hearts his parent club.

Danny Rogers and Dean Lyness will fight it out for the number one jersey following Craig Samson's retirement.

Gary MacKenzie remains out.

Hearts are still without Steven Naismith, Uche Ikpeazu, Christophe Berra and John Souttar.

Match Preview: Dundee v St Mirren

It’s 12th versus 11th tomorrow in the Ladbrokes Premiership as St Mirren travel to bottom side Dundee.

The Buddies go into the match sitting one point above Jim McIntyre’s Dark Blues.

THIS SEASON

It’s been a tough start to the season for each side with both seeing managerial changes in the early part of the season.

Oran Kearney has been in charge of St Mirren since September, while Jim McIntyre replaced Neil McCann at Dens in the middle of October.

Saints’ only league win so far this season came against tomorrow’s opponents on the opening day of the season. A Danny Mullen double came either side of an Elton Ngwatala strike to get St Mirren off to a winning start on their return to the Premiership.

The Buddies other Premiership point came at the Simple Digital Arena in Kearney’s first match as Saints gaffer as they drew 0-0 with champions Celtic.

Dundee’s three points came from a 2-0 win away to Hamilton in September. Andy Boyle and Karl Madianga scored for the Dark Blues that afternoon.

Saints come into tomorrow’s match on the back of a 2-0 loss to Rangers at home last Saturday. While Rangers ultimately picked up the points thanks to two late goals, the Buddies would have been encouraged by a good performance against Steven Gerrard’s side.

Dundee were edged out by Motherwell last weekend with the Fir Park side scoring in the second half to give them a 1-0 win that kept tomorrow’s hosts bottom.

PREVIOUS

St Mirren have won on their last two trips to Dens Park. The last visit came in January 2017 with goals from John Sutton and Jack Baird helping the Buddies to a 2-0 win in the Scottish Cup.

The last league meeting between the two at Dens was in 2014 and also saw Saints come out on top thanks to a Kenny McLean double and a wonderful solo goal from Stevie Mallan securing a 3-1 win.

Dundee's last win over St Mirren was back in January 2015 with second half goals from Gary Irvine and Iain Davidson giving the Dee a 2-1 win at the Simple Digital Arena.

WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN

With Dundee failing to pick up a single point at home in the league this season, and Saints having not taken a point on their league travels this season, something has to give tomorrow afternoon.

A win for St Mirren would give Oran Kearney his first as Saints gaffer and see the Buddies move four points clear of Dundee – and potentially move to within three points of 10th place Hamilton depending on their result against St Johnstone.

If Dundee pick up all three points it would give Jim McIntyre his first points as Dundee boss and see his side leapfrog Saints into 11th.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Rangers

The Simple Digital Arena hosts its second Ladbrokes Premiership match this week when Rangers come to Paisley this afternoon.

PREVIOUS

The Buddies and The Gers have already come face-to-face this season with Saints travelling to Ibrox in August. Goals from Alfredo Morelos and Connor Goldson gave Rangers a 2-0 win.

Rangers' last visit to the Simple Digital Arena came in May 2016.

Calum Gallagher gave Saints a first half lead, with Kenny Miller equalising for the visitors a little under 10 minutes after half time. Jason Holt looked to have won it for Rangers in 88 minutes, only for Lewis Morgan to pop up with his first senior goal to give the Buddies a share of the spoils.

St Mirren's last three meetings with Rangers at the Simple Digital Arena have saw one win for each side and the aforementioned 2-2 draw.

While two of those matches came in the Championship, Saints' win back in 2011 was in the old SPL. Rangers had taken the lead through Lee Wallace, but goals just before half-time from Paul McGowan and Aaron Mooy saw the Buddies take all three points.

THIS SEASON

It's been a tough return to the Premiership for St Mirren with Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Motherwell making it 10 games without a win in the league for Saints.

An opening day win over bottom side Dundee and a 0-0 draw with Celtic have the Buddies sat in 11th place with four points from our first 11 matches this season.

Rangers come in to today's match on the back of a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Wednesday night. That result sees Gers sit in fourth place in the Ladbrokes Premiership - eight points behind league leaders Hearts.

Steven Gerrard's side have only won one of their five away matches in the league this season - a 4-1 victory at Hamilton two weeks ago. There have been draws with Aberdeen (1-1) and Motherwell (3-3) and losses to Celtic (1-0) and Livingston (1-0).

TEAM NEWS

Lee Hodson is ineligible to play against his parent club, while Ryan Flynn is suspended after his red card on Wednesday night.

Adam Eckersley played 50 minutes for the St Mirren Reserves on Monday, but didn't make the squad against Motherwell.

Kyle Magennis is still ruled out but getting closer, while Gary MacKenzie is still out with a long-term issue.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Motherwell

It's a spooky matchday as St Mirren welcome Motherwell to Paisley on Halloween.

PREVIOUS

This is St Mirren's first meeting with Motherwell since May 2015. The Buddies came out on top at the Simple Digital Arena that afternoon - winning 2-1.

All the goals came in a dramatic last 15 minutes of the match with ex-Saint John Sutton giving Well the lead from the penalty spot on 75 minutes.

Jason Naismith levelled for Saints on 84 minutes before Scott McDonald was sent off for the visitors in the final minute of regulation time.

Then, deep in stoppage time, Stevie Mallan scored a wonder goal to give The Buddies all three points.

Jack Baird is the only player who played that afternoon that could feature tonight.

Keith Lasley, Stephen McManus and Steven Hammell all started for the visitors, but have all now retired and taken up coaching roles at Motherwell.

THIS SEASON

St Mirren's disappointing defeat away to St Johnstone on Saturday saw Saints remain in 11th place with four points from our opening 10 matches. Those four points coming from a 2-1 win over Dundee on the opening day and 0-0 draw with Celtic in September - both at The Simple Digital Arena.

Motherwell have also had a slow start to their season sitting just one point above St Mirren in 10th with five points from their first 9 matches. Well have gone six matches without a win - losing five and drawing one.

A win for Saints tonight would give Oran Kearney his first as St Mirren boss and lift us above Well into 10th.

For Motherwell, they are hoping that three points tonight would see them move up to ninth, providing Hamilton fail to beat Aberdeen.

TEAM NEWS

Oran Kearney confirmed to the press that Anton Ferdinand has taken part in training this week and could feature for Saints this evening.

Adam Eckersley played 50 minutes for the St Mirren Reserves on Monday, but this match comes too soon for the Englishman. Kyle Magennis is still ruled out but getting closer.

Motherwell look set to be without Aaron Taylor-Sinclair, Andy Rose and Liam Donnelly, while Charles Dunne is a doubt.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Kilmarnock

St Mirren are back in league action tomorrow as The Buddies play host to Kilmarnock following the international break.

PREVIOUS

Saints have already faced Kilmarnock this season - opening the 2018/19 campaign against the Ayrshire side at Rugby Park in the Betfred Cup.

The Buddies impressed that night, but couldn't find the goal their play deserved and settled for a 0-0 draw.

Tomorrow's match is the first league meeting between the two in over three years, when a Steven Thompson double helped Saints record a 4-1 win over Killie at The Simple Digital Arena back in April 2015.

THIS SEASON

Saints sit 11th with four points from our opening eight matches, while Kilmarnock are in fourth on 16 points - three points behind league leaders Hearts.

The Buddies solitary league win came on the opening day when a Danny Mullen double helped see off Dundee at The Simple Digital Arena.

After an impressive end to last season, which saw them finish 5th, Kilmarnock have scored wins against Aberdeen and Celtic so far this season.

STEVE CLARKE

Ex-Saint Steve Clarke celebrated a year in charge of Kilmarnock this week and the former St Mirren defender has presided over a real turn in fortunes for Killie.

Clarke made over 200 appearances for The Buddies during the 1980s before moving on to English Premier League side Chelsea.

TEAM NEWS

Oran Kearney confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Adam Hammill and Danny Mullen have both trained this week.

Kyle Magennis, Adam Eckersley and Gary MacKenzie remain out.
