Match Preview: Queen of the South v St Mirren

This Saturday will see St Mirren take on Queen of the South at Palmerston Park, as we enter the final quarter of the season with The Buddies still at the top of the Scottish Championship table.

This will be the last time the two sides will face off this season, with The Saints coming out on top on the three previous encounters. St Mirren's last league came against Dunfermline last Saturday, where the team ran out 2-0 winners comfortably in the end. The Doonhamers last game was on Tuesday night - their rescheduled fixture against Dundee Utd - where The Arabs won 3-1.There was some good news for Saint's fans during the week though, as title chasing Livingston failed to beat Morton. The game finished 1-1 after a late deflected effort from the West Lothian side crept inside the post to earn them a point.

The first meeting between St Mirren and Queen of the South this season finished 3-1 to St Mirren at the Paisley 2021 Stadium after a first half strike from Cammy Smith and a double from Lewis Morgan. The first goal came on the 24th minute, when a Liam Smith's cross was knocked down by Gavin Reilly and Cammy Smith moved his feet well before his effort on goal trickled through the hands of Queens' keeper Alan Martin. It was a quick-fire double for the home team though, as three minutes later Lewis Morgan pounced on a ball that fell on the edge of the box after another good delivery from Liam Smith. The tricky winger then unleashed a half volley into the bottom right corner, giving the keeper no chance to put Saints 2-0 up. St Mirren put the game to bed not long after the restart, when Morgan's long range strike on the 54th minute found the bottom corner again, after Queens failed to clear a short corner. The Dumfries side did get a consolation goal on the 64th minute through a header at the back post from Jason Kerr.

The first game at Palmerston was a pivotal game for The Buddies, as they went down 2-0 after just six minutes. A goal from Stephen Dobbie 19 seconds into the game gave the Doonhamers the lead, but it was the second goal on the 6 minute mark from Chris Kane that really rocked Jack Ross' side. In a spirited effort though, the team managed to pull back the two goal deficit before half time through a brace from ex-Queens player Gavin Reilly. The comeback was complete on the 68th minute when Gary MacKenzie got a toe on the end of a Kyle Magennis corner to make the score 3-2 Saints.

The last match took place only a month ago in Paisley, when two goals in the first half were enough to seal all three points for the home team. Liam Smith got his first goal for the club on four minutes when his audacious 25 yard shot flew into the top corner. The second was added 28 minutes later, when Harry Davis converted a penalty after John Rankin handled the ball inside his own 18 yard box.

Jack Ross has confirmed that Harry Davis will not take part this weekend, due to a previous knee injury he sustained a year ago, so the manager does not want to risk him on Palmerston's artificial surface. As one drops out another comes in though, as Lewis Morgan has been back in training this week and will be fit to play after his bout of tonsillitis.

Match Preview: St Mirren V Dunfermline

After last week's weather bringing the country to a stand-still, St Mirren are back in action as they take on Dunfermline Athletic at the Paisley 2021 Stadium on Saturday.

The Buddies will take on The Pars for the fourth and final time in this Scottish Championship campaign, with the Paisley side having won two out of the previous three meetings. St Mirren currently occupy top spot in the table, while Dunfermline have now fallen out of a play-off position and sit in 5th place, having been in first place earlier in the campaign.

The first meeting of the season was one to forget for the Paisley faithful, as The Saints suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat at East End Park. First half goals from Declan McManus and David Hopkirk gave the home team a comfortable lead going into the second half, before Callum Morris contributed with the the third goal on 56 minutes to spoil Saints' impressive start to the season. To add insult to injury, St Mirren finished the game with nine men, as Adam Eckersley was given a straight red card for lifting his hands to Aaron Splaine on the 87th minute. Then a minute later Gregor Buchanan was given his second yellow, after hauling Declan McManus to the ground.

Saints gained revenge in December though, when The Pars made their first trip of the season to Paisley and went down 1-0, in a rather controversial game that saw The Saints return to the top of the Championship table. On the eight minute mark Gavin Reilly was brought down just outside the 18-yard box by Dunfermline's goalkeeper Sean Murdoch; but the man between the sticks escaped with just a yellow card, despite Reilly being clear through on goal. The deadlock was broken on 38 minutes though, as Ian McShane's cut back found Cammy Smith with the goal at his mercy, and the number 11 made no mistakes in slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

The Buddies could have doubled their lead just moments before the break, as a killer flick from Lewis Morgan sent Reilly through on goal again. With just the emerging Murdoch to beat, Saints' top goalscorer lifted the ball over the keeper and the crossbar to keep the game at 1-0. The major talking point of the game came in the second half, when Dunfermline's Ryan Williamson went down in the box and referee Craig Charleston awarded a penalty. However, after consulting with his assistant, Charleston overturned his original decision and awarded a freekick to St Mirren instead - to the dismay of The Fifers.

The last meeting between the teams took place at the end of January and was arguably one of the best results Jack Ross' side has had all year. It was a tough fought encounter - in which St Mirren had to dig in to hold on to their 2-1 lead - but the game will now be forever remembered for 'That Goal'. After a tight start to the game, The Buddies managed to produce one of the goals of the season, as the team-goal started from the the defence, as they worked their way through the entire Dunfermline team, before Cammy Smith rounded off the move with a cool finish into the bottom corner. Nicky Clark equalised for the home side not long after the restart, but a clever worked freekick from Kyle Magennis found Jack Baird who restored the lead to 2-1.

The Pars haven't been on the best run of form as of late, having not won a game since 6th January in a 1-0 win over Dumbarton. They have only picked up three points from their last five league games, with the points coming from three 0-0 draws.

St Mirren got back to winning ways two weeks ago, with a 1-0 win over Brechin. With only 10 games now remaining, Jack Ross and his squad will be looking for another strong performance tomorrow, as the push for promotion gets ever closer.

Match Preview: St Mirren V Brechin City

St Mirren will look to get back to winning ways this week as they take on Brechin City at the Paisley 2021 Stadium in the Scottish Championship on Saturday.

This will be the third time the teams have met this season, with the other two games finishing 2-1 in favour of The Buddies.

The first game took place in Paisley back in September and was a tough old slog for the home side, who relied on a 79th minute winner to rescue the three points. The Buddies started the game brightly and took the lead after 14 minutes when Cammy Smith slipped the ball under the keeper to get his sixth goal of the season. The Angus side pegged Saints back just before half time though, when former St Mirren U20s player Kalvin Orsi got on the end of deep cross to head past the opposing Craig Samson. It was late in the second half before St Mirren restored their lead, Dale Hilson managing to get a toe on to the end of a Ross Stewart cross to score his one and only goal for the team.

The next game was a similar story with a similar outcome; St Mirren took the lead early on when Gavin Reilly raced away from the Brechin defence to calmly place the ball past their keeper. Again, Saints were pegged back though as Isaac Layne managed to get in front of Jack Baird and knock the ball past the oncoming Samson to level the score. And just like the previous match The Buddies got the winner in the second half. Cammy Smith was brought down in the box and was awarded a penalty, which he stepped up to take himself and converted.

Saints had been unbeaten in the league since the beginning of December, but that record was snatched away from them last week as they suffered a 4-1 loss at the hands of title challengers Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

January signing Ryan Flynn had got the Paisley side in front within the first two minutes of the game, but a brace from ex-saint Ryan Hardie and a Lee Miller strike gave the West Lothian side a comfortable 3-1 lead going in at the break. Saints plugged away in the second half, with debutant Myles Hippolyte having his effort cleared off the goal line, but to no avail. Livi’s win was completed in injury time, as a defensive mixup resulted in Scott Robinson lifting the ball over Craig Samson to make the score 4-1.

There could be a potential debut tomorrow, as this week Jack Ross added former AC Milan midfielder, Massimo Donati, to the squad. The Italian has been training with the team for the last couple of weeks after being released by Hamilton Academical in January.

Both title contenders Livingston and Dundee Utd are in action on Friday night as they face each other at the Tony Macaroni Arena. Saint's will be hoping for a draw, so they can potentially extend the lead at the top of the Championship on Saturday to 13 points if they overcome Brechin.

Match Preview: Livingston V St Mirren

St Mirren return to action on Saturday against Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena, after a well earned break last weekend.

Saints had a free weekend last week due to the Scottish Cup, so the team will be keen to get back to league action, as the league leaders look to cement their place at the top of the Scottish Championship.

Tomorrow's opponents currently occupy second spot in the league on goal difference, but are 14 points adrift with a game in hand. However, a win for The Saints tomorrow would increase that lead to 17 points on both Livingston and Dundee Utd, who are not in action this week because of Dumbarton's Irn-Bru Cup semi-final tie.

St Mirren have played Livingston twice so far this season and both times have came out on top with a 3-1 win. The first game took place at tomorrow's venue in a hard fought encounter. The scoring was opened about the 10 minute mark when Stephen McGinn's cross deflected off Craig Halkett's leg and spun over Neil Alexander to give Saints the lead. The defender made amends though by scoring a header from a corner five minutes later to even things up. St Mirren were then reduced to 10 men after Gary Irvine's tackle was deemed too dangerous. Top goalscorer Gavin Reilly pulled The Buddies back in front in the second half though, as he pounced on a goalkeeping error from Alexander to make the score 2-1 six minutes after the restart. Reilly then rounded off the afternoon nine minutes later when he got on the end of a Stelios header to thump the ball high into the net.

The most recent game took place back in November, where Saints when down 1-0 after the first 45 minutes thanks to Dale Carrick capitalising on Craig Samson's block in the six yard box. Jack Ross' side came out fighting in the second half though, as lewis Morgan's strike six minutes after the break brought the game back to level terms. Adam Eckersley then had an effort on the 66th minutes that ricochet off of a Livingston defender before bouncing off the back of Neill Alexander and trickling over the goal line to give St Mirren the lead. The game was then put to bed on the 78th minute when Jack Baird was brought down in the box from a corner. Ian McShane stepped up and cooly sent Alexander the wrong way to give Saints a much needed win at that time.

There could be a debut for new Saints star Myles Hippolyte against his old team tomorrow, as he is now fully fit after having some niggling injury problems the last couple of months. Hippolyte spent 18 months in West Lothian before signing for Falkirk in January 2016. Josh Todd also made his comeback this week playing in a development game which saw the young buds win 3-1 against St Johnstone.

After much speculation this week, Jack Ross will be on the St Mirren bench come Saturday, having turned down a move to Barnsley FC during the week. The manager's sole focus will now be on steering the club towards promotion.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Queen of the South

St Mirren return to the Paisley 2021 Stadium for the first time in four weeks this Saturday as they take on Queen of the South in the Scottish Championship.

Saint's come into this game off the back of a valuable victory over Dunfermline last week at East End park, with goals from Cammy Smith and Jack Baird enough to secure the three points which extended St Mirren's lead at the top of the Championship table. In conjunction with Dundee Utd's 3-0 loss to Morton on Saturday, Saints now sit 11 points ahead of the Tayside club.

The last time these two clubs faced off was two days before Christmas at Palmerston Park, where St Mirren came from behind to win 3-2 in a festive thriller. After going down 1-0 just 20 seconds in to the game, thanks to a goal from Stephen Dobbie, The Doonhamers doubled their lead on the sixth minute with Chris Kane running in behind the Saints' defence and cooly slotting past Craig Samson. The Buddies did drag themselves back into the game, after Gavin Reilly capitalized on a mix up between Queens' defence and goalkeeper and headed the ball into the empty net. The comeback was complete on the 35 minute mark when Cammy Smith placed the ball inside the goalkeepers near post. The winner came on the 68th minute when Gary MacKenzie - known more for his aerial prowess - managed to get his foot on the end of a corner to cushion the ball into the bottom corner.

The first game between the two sides this season took place at the Paisley 2021 Stadium, with The Buddies running out 3-1 winners after the opener from Cammy Smith and a brace from Lewis Morgan.

Queens started the season well, winning three out of their first four games, but have struggled to find that same consistency in the last couple of months. However, they still remain in fifth place with only goal difference between them and a playoff spot. Saint's defence will be put to the test, as the visitors bring the league's top goalscorer in Stephen Dobbie to town. The Doonhamer's talisman has been in fine form all season; scoring a hat-trick last week against Brechin which moved the striker's total up to 14 league goals for the season.

As the January transfer window closed on Wednesday evening, The Buddies added one more to their ranks with the singing of Myles Hippolyte from Falkirk on Deadline Day. Unfortunately, this weekend's game will come a bit too soon for the former Bairn and is unlikely to feature after recently returning from a quad injury.

St Mirren could extend their unbeaten league run to nine games tomorrow, and with the four teams directly below Saints all playing away tomorrow, this could be a chance to widen the gap at the top as The Buddies push for promotion.

Match Preview: Dunfermline Athletic v St Mirren

St Mirren are back to league action this week as they travel to Fife on tonight to take on Dunfermline Athletic.

After last week's exit from the Scottish Cup at the hands of Aberdeen, Saints will be keen to bounce back with a win at East End Park.

The two last met at the Paisley 2021 Stadium in December where St Mirren ran out 1-0 winners in a controversial affair, after Cammy Smith slotted home from six yards out after a nice piece of play from the Buddies. The main talking point from the game though was when referee Craig Charleston awarded a penalty for Dunfermline, after a tackle from Adam Eckersley on Ryan Williamson, only to overturn the decision moments later and award a freekick to the Saints.

This was The Buddies first victory over The Pars since they were promoted back to the Championship in 2015/16. The five previous league meetings between the clubs have resulted in three wins for Dunfermline and two draws.

The last time the two sides met at East End Park was a day to forget for Jack Ross' side, as they went down 3-0 to the home side back in September. Goals from Declan McManus, David Hopkirk and Calum Morris were enough to seal all three point. But St Mirren's disappointing afternoon wasn't finished, as they saw the game out with only nine men, after a straight red card for Adam Eckersley and second yellow for Gregor Buchanan rounded off a bad day at the office for Saints.

St Mirren go into this game in good league form as they are unbeaten in their last seven games - winning six and drawing just the once. The last league outing was a 2-0 win over Dumbarton, which included a first goal of the season for captain Stephen McGinn.

Dunfermline had been on a poor run, picking up only three points from seven games during November and December. They seem to have put this past them though and come into the game in decent league form, having won three out of their last four games, drawing their last game 0-0 with Dundee Utd.

It will be another tough test for St Mirren, but could be a crucial game in the club's hunt for promotion this season.

Match Preview: Aberdeen v St Mirren

St Mirren have a break from league action this week as they travel north tomorrow to take on Aberdeen in the fourth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup.

The Buddies will be looking to make an impression on the Premier League outfit, having extended their unbeaten run to seven, after last weeks 2-0 triumph away to Dumbarton, with in-form Cammy Smith netting the first, followed by captain Stephen McGinn's first goal of the season.

St Mirren will need to be at their very best as Aberdeen will be going into the game with confidence, as they currently hold second place in the Scottish Premiership; and having had their two week winter break, including a trip to Dubai, Derek McInnes' side will be fresh and raring to go in the more familiar Scottish climate.

This will be the first time the two sides have met in three years since Saints dropped out of the Premiership in 2015, with the last encounter finishing 3-0 to the Dons, after a brace from Adam Rooney and the third headed in from Mark Reynolds. Both scorers could feature this time around also, with Rooney scoring the only goal in Aberdeen's last victory over Partick Thistle, winning 1-0 at the end of December.

This could be the Saints fans first chance to catch a glimpse of their new signings. Creative midfielder Ryan Flynn, who was released from Oldham Athletic last week signed for St Mirren on Monday and midfielder Mark Hill who signed on loan until the end of the season from Celtic on Tuesday.

Saints progressed from the previous round after a resounding 7-1 victory away to Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale with four goals from Gavin Reilly and a goal a piece for Lewis Morgan, Jack Baird and Cammy Smith. This will be Aberdeen's first tie this year and they will no doubt be on the hunt for Scottish Cup glory, having narrowly lost out to a last minute winner against Celtic in last year's final.

It has been over a quarter of a century since either side won the coveted trophy, with St Mirren's last success coming in 1987 after Ian Ferguson's winner in extra time against Saints now league rivals, Dundee United.

Jack Ross and his side won a lot of plaudits for their performance in the tournament last year; in particular their gutsy effort against Celtic in the quarter final at Celtic Park, who then went on to win the tournament.

It is expected to be a tight affair with both teams flying high in their respective divisions. Kick off will be at 12.15PM and will be shown on BBC 1 Scotland for those not able to make the journey to Aberdeen. Whatever happens it will be a good test for Jack Ross and his team, and should hold them in good stead going forward for the rest of the season.

Match Preview: Dumbarton v St Mirren

St Mirren make the short journey across the Erskine Bridge tomorrow to face Dumbarton in the Ladbrokes Championship.

The Buddies come into tomorrow's match on the back of a 1-0 win over Inverness last weekend that saw The Saints increase their gap over Dundee United at the top to six points.

That win saw Jack Ross' side extend their unbeaten run to six matches and was St Mirren's fifth win from their last six since a defeat to tomorrow's opponents at the start of December.

The Buddies have faced Dumbarton twice this season - winning once and losing the other. The first came at The Your Radio 103FM Stadium in October where goals from Gavin Reilly and John Sutton saw St Mirren win away to Dumbarton for the first time since 1996.

The second, the aforementioned loss in December, saw ex-Saint Tom Walsh score an 80th minute winner to shock the 10 man league leaders who had Stelios Demetriou sent off in the first half.

While St Mirren are unbeaten since that loss to The Sons last month, Stephen Aitken's side have failed to win in five since that match. They face Saints tomorrow having lost 1-0 at home to Dunfermline last week. They have, however, taken points in draws at home against Falkirk and away to Queen of the South.

There are a number of familiar faces to Saints in the Dumbarton side. No fewer than five ex-Saints featured in Dumbarton's 1-0 win in December with Scott Gallacher, Kyle Hutton, Tom Walsh, Stuart Carswell and Calum Gallagher all starting at the Paisley 2021 Stadium. Hutton is likely to return to the Sons side tomorrow having missed recent matches against Queen of The South and Dunfermline due to suspension. Earlier today Dumbarton announced the signing of 35 year-old striker Iain Russell and he goes into the squad for tomorrow.

Since St Mirren's relegation to the Championship in 2015, games between The Saints and Dumbarton have been tough fought contests. The Buddies' 2-0 win earlier this season was the first time either side has won the match by two clear goals since a 7-0 St Mirren win in 2008. Tomorrow's encounter is likely to be the same with both sides searching for three points to further their differing aspirations this season.

You can find all the match information ahead of tomorrow's game here.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Inverness

St Mirren host their first match at the Paisley 2021 Stadium in 2018 as Inverness Caledonian Thistle make their second trip to Paisley this season.

The Buddies started off 2018 with a 1-1 draw in the Renfrewshire derby with Morton at Cappielow. Lewis Morgan, who completed his transfer to Celtic this afternoon, opened the scoring for Saints in a first half that saw Jack Ross' side well in control. But The Ton came into the game in the second half and grabbed an equaliser through Thomas O'Ware with around 10 minutes to go.

Inverness also began the new year drawing 1-1 as they were held at home by Livingston. Aaron Doran put the Caley Jags ahead with just six minutes played, but they were dealt a blow when Iain Vigurs was shown red as the first half drew to a close. Like Morton did against Saints, Livingston scored a late equaliser when Alan Lithgow headed home.

It's taken Inverness a bit of time to adjust to life in the Ladbrokes Championship. Just one win in their first nine matches saw them sit in ninth place, but despite that difficult start to the season a good run of form with five wins from their last ten league matches sees them sit just five points off a promotion play-off spot.

St Mirren have played Inverness twice this season, winning on both occasions. The first came back in September in an incredible match at the Paisley 2021 Stadium which saw five goals in a 13 minute spell as The Buddies ran out 4-2 winners. Saints then visited the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium at the end of November to face John Robertson's side for a second time. It was a feisty match with second half goals from Ian McShane and Gavin Reilly giving St Mirren a valuable three points.

Despite their away loss to Saints earlier in the season, The Caley Jags have a fairly strong record at the Paisley 2021 Stadium with September's 4-2 defeat just their second loss in 12. They've also won six of the 12 and drawn four since The Buddies moved in to our home at Greenhill Road. But Jack Ross and his team will come into tomorrow's match in confident frame of mind following the two wins over Inverness this season and the sustained good run of form that sees Saints sit atop the Ladbrokes Championship.

Saints will be aiming to extend their five match unbeaten run and maintain the points gap over Dundee United at the top of the table. Inverness, meanwhile, will be looking to pick up three points in an attempt to edge themselves towards the promotion play-off spots. Given the way the two games between these two have gone this season we are most likely in for another intriguing encounter.

Match Preview: Morton v St Mirren

St Mirren get 2018 underway with a trip to Cappielow today for the third Renfrewshire derby of the season.

The sides last met in October at the Paisley 2021 Stadium as they shared the spoils following a controversial 2-2 draw. Saints opened the scoring on 66 minutes from the penalty spot through Ian McShane. The decision to award a penalty infuriated Morton as it appears the foul on Lewis Morgan took place outside the penalty box. But the Ton levelled less than two minutes later with a thunderbolt from Andy Murdoch getting them back on terms. Just four minutes later, The Buddies were back ahead as top scorer Gavin Reilly swept home a cross from Cammy Smith. Morton would equalise again with a little over 10 minutes remaining following the decision by the referee to award the visitors a penalty kick. Ex-St Mirren midfielder Gary Harkins stepped up and made no mistake to make it 2-2. But the drama was not over there when, a few moments later, Reilly was brought down inside the box. The referee failed to award Saints their second penalty of the afternoon despite clear contact being made on the striker.

Today's trip to Cappielow is St Mirren's second this season having visited the stadium back in August for match day two. It was a day to forget for Saints as Morton ran out 4-1 winners thanks to two penalties from Michael Tidser either side of a wonderful Cammy Smith goal, before Bob McHugh and Andy Murdoch scored to put the seal on a big derby win for the Ton.

St Mirren have, however, won their second fixture at Cappielow in each of the previous two seasons. A Lawrence Shankland header was enough for The Buddies to claim three points two years ago today. Last season's second trip to Cappielow saw the Buddies boost their hopes of Championship survival with a stunning 4-1 win over the Ton thanks to goals from Stelios, Stevie Mallan, John Sutton and Gary MacKenzie.

The Buddies ended 2017 on a high with a 2-0 win over Dundee United giving Jack Ross' side a five point gap at the top of the Ladbrokes Championship. It was Saints' fourth league win in a row after having already seen off Brechin, Dunfermline and Queen of the South in December.

Morton, meanwhile, come into today's match on the back of a 1-0 home win over Inverness on December 23rd. They were scheduled to face Dumbarton last Saturday, however, that was postponed due to the weather.

A win for Saints today would help Jack Ross' side maintain their gap at the top of the Ladbrokes Championship. While Morton know that a win, coupled by results elsewhere going their way, would see them climb into the play-off spots.
