Street Stuff Serves Up Almost 1000 Healthy Meals to Young People This Summer

Renfrewshire’s award-winning Street Stuff programme has served almost 1000 healthy meals to young people already this summer – with three weeks of the school holidays still to go.

The programme has been holding summer clubs every weekday afternoon throughout the summer at venues across Renfrewshire, with every young person who attends receiving a free meal to go along with the activities.

Football, gaming and the Street Stuff Youth Bus have been entertaining the young people as they make new friends, get active and count down the days until they’re back to school.

Councillor Marie McGurk, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Communities, Housing and Planning Policy Board, said: "Our Street Stuff programme is only becoming more and more popular and I was delighted to visit the Airdome to meet the young people taking part.

"It’s important for many young people to have a place to go during the holidays where they can feel safe, but also where they are given a healthy meal to keep them going as this can be extremely important during the holiday period.

"The programme supports families across Renfrewshire by giving young people the chance to stay active and make new friends so send them along this summer – you’ll have a hard time stopping them coming back once you do."

Activities are available at venues across the area including the St Mirren FC Airdome, Knockhill Park, Gleniffer High and Our Lady of Peace Primary.

Any young person aged 8 and over is welcome to take part in as many sessions as they would like to attend.

Street Stuff Manager, Stevie Gallacher said: "It’s fantastic to see so many young people taking part in our activities during the summer holidays and we’re delighted to have them.

"Our coaches and volunteers are doing a fantastic job of keeping them entertained, while also being there to listen to any problems they’re having and supporting them as best they can.

"We’re only halfway through so I can’t wait to welcome even more to our activities across Renfrewshire and I’d encourage anyone to come along as often as they like for the rest of the holidays – and don’t forget our regular evening programme is still on too!"

The summer clubs will continue every weekday at various venues until the final session at Gleniffer High on Friday 9 August.

Match Report: St Mirren 1-0 Edinburgh City

Jim Goodwin picked up his first win as St Mirren manager as Saints overcame stuffy Edinburgh City thanks to Oan Djorkaeff's late penalty.

After a fairly quiet opening 70 minutes Saints upped the ante in the final 20 and made the breakthrough when Frenchman Djorkaeff netted from 12 yards after Paul McGinn had been fouled inside the penalty box in 89 minutes.

The win moved Saints into second in Group H ahead of Saturday's trip to K-Park to face East Kilbride.

Jim Goodwin made two changes to the side that lost to Dunfermline on Sunday with Cameron MacPherson and Oan Djorkaeff in for Ethan Erhahon and Danny Mullen.

Cody Cooke led the line for Saints and it was the Englishman who had the first opportunity of the match on 13 minutes with an audacious overhead kick at the far post that went wide.

Just under 10 minutes later Gary MacKenzie headed into the arms of Edinburgh City goalkeeper Callum Antell following Tony Andreu's corner. City broke forward at speed with Josh Walker finding himself in on goal. The Citizens skipper attempted to chip Vaclav Hladky but the goalkeeper was equal to the attempt.

Hladky was forced into another save just before the half-hour mark when MacKenzie slipped allowing the visitors a chance to run through on goal. Scott Shepherd fed the ball to Alex Harris on the edge of the area but his low curling effort was held by the Czech goalkeeper.

Jim Goodwin made two changes after 60 minutes in an attempt to find the opener with Ethan Erhahon and Danny Mullen coming on in place of Kyle Magennis and Tony Andreu.

The substitutes looked to have combined to give Saints the lead on 70 minutes when Mullen cheekily flicked Erhahon's ball across the box beyond Antell only for the linesman to rule it out for offside.

That did seem to spur the home side on with Cooke and Ryan Flynn both going close soon after. Cooke met a MacPherson cross first time with Antell doing well to block before the goalkeeper made a terrific save to push away Flynn's long-range volley.

While the home side were looking the more likely there was a scare for the Saints defence when substitute Allan Smith brilliantly brought down a ball over the top and got his shot away. However, the effort drifted wide.

Mullen had two big chances in the last 10 minutes to win the game for the Buddies. He first broke the offside trap to get a foot on a deflected Flynn effort. The Edinburgh defence stopped assuming the linesman's flag would be forthcoming. But it wasn't raised and the striker's touch was blocked by the goalkeeper. A few minutes later Paul McGinn did well to keep the ball in play at the touchline and sent it across the box to Mullen who flicked wide from close range.

St Mirren kept coming and it was Paul McGinn's determination to reach the ball ahead of an Edinburgh City defender that won the Buddies a penalty. The City defender tried to see the ball out but McGinn managed to get in front with the away stopper swinging a high foot and catching the full-back on the face. Referee Greg Aitken pointed to the spot and Djorkaeff, on his first start for the Buddies, stepped up to take and confidently dispatched of the ball sending Antell the wrong way and securing three Group H points for Saints.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Edinburgh City

St Mirren are back in action at the Simple Digital Arena this evening as we play host to Edinburgh City in matchday two of the Betfred Cup.

FORM

Saints will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of defeat to Dunfermline in Paisley on Sunday and aim to get our first points on the board in Group H.

The Buddies, who fell 3-0 behind at half-time against the Pars, looked like the might launch an improbable comeback when strikers Cody Cooke and Danny Mullen netted inside the space of two minutes to make it 3-2. But with 25 minutes to go Jim Goodwin's side couldn't find an equaliser that would have taken the match to penalties.

Tonight is Edinburgh City's first match in the Betfred Cup this season after being the side that missed out on the first round of fixtures at the weekend.

Managed by James McDonagh, former Falkirk assistant manager, Edinburgh City come into tonight's match on the back of pre-season wins over Gala Fairydean (3-0), St Johnstone (2-0) and East Kilbride (5-2).

McDonagh's side challenged for the League Two title last season but fell away towards the final few matches and finished in third between champions Peterhead and Clyde. They faced the latter in the promotion play-offs but lost 4-0 to Danny Lennon's Clyde.

PREVIOUS

Saints have faced Edinburgh City once before in the Betfred Cup group stages.

The Buddies defeated the Citizens 3-0 at the Simple Digital Arena in July 2016 thanks to first-half goals from Lawrence Shankland, Tom Walsh and Jack Baird.

Despite that win and finishing on nine points in the group, it wasn't enough for Saints to progress to the next round.

There have been four meetings between the sides over the last 84 years since they first met in old second division in 1935. City won 3-2 in the first meeting, but Saints have came out in top in the remaining three since then. A 5-0 win in 1936 was followed up by a 3-1 win in the Scottish Cup in 1939, before the 2016 Betfred Cup group stage match.

ONES TO WATCH

The Buddies backline will have to keep their eye on City's Blair Henderson. The striker hit 40 goals for the Citizens last season - 30 of those coming in League Two to see him finish top scorer by a country mile. His goalscoring exploits saw him named as League Two Player of the Year and win the SPFL 'Tartan Boot'.

Another key player for City is captain Josh Walker. Walker is probably better remembered to Scottish football fans for a loan spell at Aberdeen over 10 years ago where he scored in their famous 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in the then UEFA Cup.

WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN

Saints will be looking to win their remaining three group stage matches in the hope that nine points will be enough to progress to the next round.

Edinburgh City will be looking to shock the Buddies and get their opening Betfred Cup match off to a winning start.

TEAM NEWS

Both Tony Andreu and Oan Djorkaeff made their Saints debuts in Sunday's match against Dunfermline. The latter's came from off the bench and he could be in line to make first St Mirren start this evening.

The squad of 18 is likely to be the same as Sunday's match with no fresh injury concerns.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

    BY BUS

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Walk straight up Clark Street to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the the stadium on the opposite side of the road. Access to the North Stand will be from Ferguslie Park Avenue.
