Match Report: Livingston 2-1 St Mirren

St Mirren were consigned to just a second loss in 2020 as the Buddies were beaten 2-1 by Livingston.

Jim Goodwin made one change to the side that drew 1-1 against Motherwell on Saturday with Junior Morias coming in in place of Jamie McGrath, while Saints were boosted by the news that Lee Hodson had shaken off the injury he suffered in Saturday's Scottish Cup tie.

Both sides had opportunities in the opening couple of minutes of the contest. Jon Obika was a toe away from scoring into an empty net with just three minutes on the clock. The striker looked to latch on to a long ball over the top from Morias. Both Obika and Livingston goalkeeper Robby McCrorie seemed to hesitate before the goalie got in just ahead of the striker to clear.

Immediately from the clearance it was the home side's turn to attack with Saints having to clear a Jon Guthrie header off the line. Guthrie was involved again ten minutes later when he met a knock-down from Ciaron Brown but hooked over from close range.

Saints had a great chance to go one-on-one with McCrorie after a quick counter. Alex Jakubiak had peeled away from the defence in acres of space but Obika over-hit the pass sending it straight to the goalkeeper.

And how the Buddies would rue passing up that opportunity when Livingston would take the lead less than two minutes later. Lyndon Dykes went down inside the box under the challenge from Conor McCarthy. It seemed a controversial decision with very little contact appearing to take place between the defender and the striker. But referee David Munro awarded the spot-kick and Steven Lawless made no mistake from 12 yards as he sent Hladky the wrong way to open the scoring.

That was the difference at the interval and the Buddies couldn't have gotten the second-half off to a worst start if they tried. Despite taking kick-off, the Buddies lost the ball with half-time substitute Keaghan Jacobs finding Lyndon Dykes who ran clear of the Saints defence and slotted home from close range just 20 seconds after the restart.

A difficult task had been made even tougher but the Buddies didn't let the heads go down and pulled a goal back on 50 minutes. A nice passage of play culminated in Cammy MacPherson sliding the ball through to Obika who showed good composure to knock beyond McCrorie to score his eighth goal of the season and half the deficit.

Saints put the pressure on and could have been level two minutes later only for Obika to head just over from inside the box.

With 30 minutes remaining Hladky was forced into action as he made a brilliant save to keep the scoreline down after Scott Robinson had found himself in the clear. The forward charged into the box but was denied by the Czech goalkeeper's foot. Dykes almost added his second and Livingston's third on 65 minutes when he headed off the post from a corner.

The Buddies continued to search for an equaliser heading into the closing minutes with McCarthy going agonisingly close with a header that was deflected wide. Then, in stoppage time, Calum Waters sent a terrific ball into the box to meet the head of Obika who nodded over.

Match Preview: Livingston v St Mirren (12th Feb)

St Mirren make the trip to West Lothian this evening as they get set to face Livingston in Ladbrokes Premiership action.

FORM

St Mirren - DDDDLW

Livingston - LLWWWW

Saints go into tonight's match in good form having lost just one of their last seven matches - a 1-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox last month.

Jim Goodwin's men have drawn their last four matches in all competitions - being held 1-1 with Motherwell in the William Hill Scottish Cup following draws with Hamilton (1-1), Hibernian (2-2) and Aberdeen (0-0) in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

The Buddies last league win came on Sunday 29th December when Ilkay Durmus' first-half strike was enough to give Saints all three points against Kilmarnock at the Simple Digital Arena.

For a second season in a row, Livingston have confounded expectations with Gary Holt's side currently sitting in fifth place in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

The Lions are five points clear of seventh place Kilmarnock and will be looking for three points to keep their top six hopes going strong.

Despite two losses in their last two matches away to Ross County in the league (0-2) and away to Inverness in the William Hill Scottish Cup (0-1), a good spell of form in January saw Gary Holt named as the Ladbrokes Premiership Manager of the Month.

Before last week's loss to Ross County, Livingston had won their previous four Premiership games defeating Motherwell (1-0), Hamilton (4-2), St Johnstone (1-0) and Hibernian (4-0).

Livingston haven't conceded a goal at home in their last six Premiership matches - a run which stretches back to the start of November when they lost 2-0 to Rangers.

PREVIOUS

Livingston are unbeaten against St Mirren in two meetings this season.

Saints were edged out when they travelled to the Tony Macaroni Arena at the end of August. Goals either side of half-time from Alan Lithgow and Lyndon Dykes were enough to give Livi a 2-1 win despite Kyle Magennis pulling a goal back.

The Buddies fought back from 3-1 down to earn a 3-3 draw with Gary Holt's side at the Simple Digital Arena in December. Junior Morias got Saints on level terms after Aymen Souda had given the visitors the lead. Jon Guthrie restored Livingston's lead on the stroke of half-time, while Souda added a third as he looked to secure three points for the Lions. But two goals from Jon Obika inside 12 minutes earned St Mirren a share of the spoils.

St Mirren's last win against Livingston came in April last year when Paul McGinn, Danny Mullen and Simeon Jackson scored in a 3-1 win at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

TEAM NEWS

Gary MacKenzie, Kyle Magennis, Stephen McGinn and Ryan Flynn all remain out with injuries.

Seifedin Chabbi played 45 minutes for the St Mirren Reserves yesterday but tonight's match likely comes too soon for the forward.

Lee Hodson is touch and go after picking up an injury in Saturday's draw with Motherwell.

New signing Ross Wallace could feature in the squad subject to the club receiving international clearance.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

"You know what you are going to get with Livingston.

"They are a very direct team. They play for set-plays, long throws and anything 40 yards from your goal is coming into your box.

"Vaclav will need to be big and strong and the two centre-halves will have to stand up and be counted as well.

"Hopefully we can go there, get the ball down and play our game and stand up to the physicality that Livingston have got."

Ross Wallace joins Saints on short-term deal

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Ross Wallace on a deal until the end of the season subject to international clearance.

Ross, capped once for Scotland, brings an abundance of experience to Saints having made over 500 appearances in his career.

A versatile player, Ross began his career at Celtic where he made 51 appearances scoring four goals between 2002 and 2006.

Dundee-born Ross departed Celtic in August 2006 to join Roy Keane's Sunderland AFC and spent the rest of his career down south having spells with Preston North End, Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday and, most recently, Fleetwood Town.

The 34-year-old trained with Saints in November 2019 and, following long-term injuries to Kyle Magennis and Ryan Flynn, manager Jim Goodwin has moved to sign Ross until the end of the season.

Speaking to stmirren.com, the manager said: "Ross is a fantastic, experienced player who has played at a high level.

"Just having someone with his experience around is great and also the fact he can play in midfield and at left-back.

"People will be used to him playing in more advanced areas but he actually played a lot at League One in England with Fleetwood Town last year in the middle of the pitch. He’s a very calming influence in there, keeps things nice and simple and reads the game well. He’s still got bags of quality as well.

"That experience he will bring is invaluable. I do like to have experienced players around the squad and to have somebody like Ross who has played at a high level can only be a benefit.

"When Ross came up in November it was purely for training, it wasn’t a trial period. At that moment in time we didn’t need anybody but then obviously losing Magennis and Flynny, along with Ross still being available, convinced us to get him in. It’s vital that we have enough to get us through the season.

"Obviously fitness wise he isn’t going to be where we want him to be at the moment but we will work with him over the next few weeks."
