Manager happy with disciplined performance in win over Hibernian

The manager was pleased with disciplined performance as he gave his reaction to today's win over Hibernian.

Baccus first goal makes it three for three for Saints

Saints made it three wins on the spin as a goal from a land down under proved enough to see off Hibs in Paisley.

Anyone who was late missed the decisive moment as the only goal arrived within six minutes. Ryan Strain showed great ability to find himself acres of space and he made full use of it, delivering a wonderful cross for fellow Aussie Keanu Baccus to slot home from close range.

While Hibs had a few chances – Elie Youan missing the best of them - it could have been a far more comfortable victory as Saints squandered some late opportunities – Eamonn Brophy hitting the post before firing over while Baccus was inches away from getting his second in the final minute.

Unsurprisingly, Saints boss Stephen Robinson stuck with the same side that had thumped Dundee United a week earlier, meaning the returning Alex Gogic had to make do with a place on the bench. One-time Buddie Jake Doyle-Hayes started for the visitors, whose attack was spearheaded by Christian Doidge.

Hibs may have started brightly but it was Saints who showed early cutting edge, scoring with their very first attack. Strain's cross from the right was just begging for someone to run onto it and smash it home and Baccus duly obliged, side-footing away his first goal since arriving in Paisley in the summer.

Chances were few and far between despite both sides being more than willing to get both the ball and bodies forward, Chris Cadden sending a header miles wide of the Saints goal the pick of a rather poor crop. A fine touch allowed Curtis Main to bring the ball down in a decent position but his shot was always going well wide.

The same couldn't be said for Doidge's glancing header, the striker looking to have sent Ryan Porteous' cross into the bottom corner only for the ball to flash past the post. Mark O'Hara went even closer at the other end, arriving unmarked to meet Marcus Fraser's cross but the Saints skipper's header was parried away by David Marshall. There were scares in the Saints defence just before the break, Carson just getting to the ball before Doidge after Charles Dunne was short with a pass before Elie Youan fired into the side netting moments later.

Hibs should have been level moments after hostilities resumed. The home defence couldn't stop a cross making its way to the unmarked Youan at the back post but he failed to make a clean connection and the ball trickled agonisingly across goal, the Hibs fans in the stand unable to suck it over the line. The chance still gave the visitors a lift, Carson doing well to turn behind Joe Newell's low drive before Richard Tait blocked a shot from Cadden.

Main headed over from Erhahon's free-kick before Cadden got the better of both Tait and O'Hara to send in a teasing ball that was just beyond the outstretched toe of Doidge. Jonah Ayunga's last involvement before being replaced by Brophy was to deliver a great cross that Main fired inches wide. It looked like the striker's first involvement had doubled Saints' lead as great work by Main got Brophy in behind the visiting defence, only for his shot to beat Marshall but not the woodwork as it hit the far post, rolled along the line and into the arms of the grateful Hibs keeper.

As Hibs pushed for an equaliser, Saints were being reduced to threatening on the counter attack. Dunne broke forward from defence and then sent Baccus away but this time he shot over from the edge of the box. He went closer a few minutes later when his shot was deflected wide after Hibs failed to clear their lines.

Gogic was handed his return when he replaced Ethan Erhahon and headed a late corner well wide before Brophy should have wrapped things up in stoppage time, robbing the dithering Porteous on the touchline and charging towards goal before blazing a shot well over. An even better chance arrived right at the death when Brophy played in Baccus, the midfielder having the whole goal to aim at but he shot narrowly wide. Thankfully, it proved to be the last kick of the game as Saints picked up both a third successive win and clean sheet.

The best bit is that all activities are FREE of charge and funded by the club and SMISA so get down early to be part of all the fun!

HELP REQUIRED

In order to continue to provide the highly successful pre match entertainment for families and to ensure their safety, we urgently need volunteers to supervise each of the activities, such as the inflatables and provide a welcome to the fans of the future to your club.

If you can help for just two hours between 1pm and 3pm kick off on some Saturdays please email slo@stmirren.com.

A number of changes have been made to our parking protocol at the SMiSA Stadium ahead of the new season.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Up Next: St Mirren v Hibernian (27th Aug)

St Mirren are back at home this weekend as Stephen Robinson's side host Hibernian at the SMiSA Stadium.

Saints go into Saturday's match in good spirits after two wins in the last two cinch Premiership matches. The Buddies defeated Dundee United 3-0 at Tannadice last weekend - our biggest league win since a 5-1 win over United in January 2021. That came off the back of a 1-0 win against Ross County at the SMiSA Stadium the previous week.

Hibernian have picked up five points from their opening four matches in the cinch Premiership. Their only win so far came on opening day when a late Josh Campbell goal saw them defeat St Johnstone 1-0.

Late goals have been a recurring theme for Lee Johnson's side this season with Martin Boyle's injury-time goal earning a 1-1 draw with rivals Hearts on matchday two and Campbell again on the scoresheet in stoppage time last weekend in a 2-2 draw with Rangers at Easter Road.

The Hibees have lost once in the league so far this season - losing 2-1 at Livingston.

Previous

Saints were edged out in the last meeting of the two with Ewan Henderson scoring in a 1-0 win for Hibernian at the SMiSA Stadium in April.

The Buddies did, however, defeat Hibs in the match before that when Connor Ronan netted the game's only goal in a 1-0 victory for Saints at Easter Road in February.

The two other contests last season ended in draws with Joe Shaughnessy scoring late equalisers in both 1-1 and 2-2 draws.

Our last win over Hibernian at the SMiSA Stadium was in March 2017 with Stelios Demetriou scoring twice in a vital 2-0 win on our way to the 'Great Escape' of 2016/17.

The officials

Graham Grainger is the referee on Saturday and will be assisted by David McGeachie and Gordon Crawford. Kevin Clancy is the fourth official.

Alex Gogic on his return to St Mirren

Alex Gogic feels like he is "home" after returning to Saints on a two-year deal.

The Cyprus international initially signed for the club on loan in January until the summer and spent the close season weighing up all his options following his contract expiry at Hibernian.

While he confessed he wanted to take his time to consider all those options he is delighted to be back in Paisley.

I had a few offers abroad but, considering everything, I felt this was the best offer.

"It does feel like home. I became a man in Scotland so it’s definitely my second home.

"It wasn’t an easy decision, that’s why I took this long. It took a while to decide what was best for me and my family together and we decided this was the best decision for us.

"I didn’t want to rush into anything. I have got a two-year contract here but I had offers for three years and I wanted it to be right.

"At the start of the summer I was thinking maybe I would try something different and new. I thought I would wait and see my offers. And then when you consider everything, it’s nice to come back home."

The 28-year-old first joined the club on deadline day of the January transfer window and would score on his debut against Motherwell.

He admitted the loan reinvigorated his love for football and said that - alongside fans and the manager's influence - was pivotal him returning.

I really enjoyed myself from January being here and playing football and just being happy again," he continued.

"And even just the fans tweeting me almost every day. I had some nice tweets and obviously a warm welcome. It’s nice to be loved.

"He [Stephen Robinson] is really excited, and so am I, to work again together and do well.

"He is demanding but in a good way. He just wants the best out of you and he knows how to get it.

"He knows what he wants and I think we will do well this season. The lads have started so well and been playing well."

While Alex hasn't had a pre-season, he said he is feeling good after joining in with the players at training on Monday and could be in line for his second debut against his former side Hibernian on Saturday.

I have been staying fit.

"It’s probably not the same as the guys after pre-season, but I feel fit and I trained with the boys earlier."

Help a Buddie

Our Help A Buddie initiative is up and running with ACCORD Hospice, The Disability Resource Centre and Ukrainian families the recipients of our community tickets so far this season.

ACCORD were donated 15 tickets for our opening day match against Motherwell and used their tickets for patients and their families, volunteers and staff at the Hospice. We also welcomed Ukrainian families to that match in tandem with Street Stuff and the resettlement team at Renfrewshire Council.

The Disability Resource Centre in Paisley were the recipients for our match with Ross County with Trevor Carson and Peter Urminsky visiting Margaret, one of the DRC's users and a lifelong Buddie, who hadn't had the opportunity to see the team in action so far this season.

Launched in June, Help a Buddie is our brand-new initiative where St Mirren supporters have the chance to purchase and donate a match ticket for those less fortunate.

The Help a Buddie scheme will run for the entirety of the 2022/23 season and will continue to help benefit local community groups/organisations and those less fortunate supporters.

If you want to Help a Buddie please click HERE to donate a match ticket.
