The manager gives his assessment of defeat against Dundee United.
Saints, the city of Dundee and late drama. It seems to be a thing lately.
It looked as if Buddies legend Tony Fitzpatrick would have a happy ending in his final game before retirement as youngster Jay Henderson scored a screamer after just three minutes.
However, after the break United looked a completely different side and should have been level well before Dylan Levitt's tremendous equaliser.
It looked as if the game would peter out in a draw but with a couple of minutes left Saints goalie Jak Alnwick charged from his goal, clattered Tony Watt and was sent off. Dean Lyness came on and had little to do – until the final seconds of stoppage time when United hit the woodwork for a third time and Marc McNulty nodded home to spark jubilant scenes behind the goal.
Henderson was back in the team due to an injury to Jordan Jones with Marcus Fraser replacing Scott Tanser in the Saints defence. Tony Watt and Charlie Mulgrew returned for the visitors, with one time Saints loan star Liam Smith starting in defence.
It took Henderson all of three minutes to make his presence felt. The young winger picked up the ball from Connor Ronan in the middle of the park and charged towards the edge of the United area before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Benji Siegrist to give the Buddies the lead.

Despite enjoying plenty of the ball it took United a fair amount of time to muster up some sort of response, Calum Butcher blasting an ambitious shot miles over midway through the half. A few moments later Marc McNulty dragged a shot across goal after being played in by Miller Thomson, before Jak Alnwick had to rush from his line to block a shot from Ilmari Niskanen.
Saints hadn't really threatened since scoring but Eamonn Brophy almost doubled the lead when his shot from the edge of the box was deflected wide. When Henderson whipped the corner in, Fraser headed it across for Charles Dunne but he hooked it over. United had a half-hearted penalty shout turned down when they claimed a Ryan Edwards header had been blocked by a Saints defender's arm before the Buddies forced a series of corners as they looked to double their lead. Siegrist almost punched one into his own net, while at another Dunne threatened with a header that was eventually nodded behind by Edwards.
United introduced Nicky Clark and Ross Graham at the break and they looked a totally different outfit, Edwards heading over from a corner just the start of their push for an equaliser. Saints had a huge let off when the home defence failed to cut out a cross that made it all the way through to the unmarked McNulty, but Richard Tait was in the right place to head the forward's shot off the line. The Buddies immediately pushed up field but Greg Kiltie opted to shoot from range and his effort was well off target.
Clark's decision to have a go from 25 yards moments later looked similarly optimistic but the striker was desperately unlucky to see his shot thump off the bar with Alnwick beaten. Soon after United finally did get the better of the Saints keeper, Dylan Levitt playing a one-two off an unwitting defender before firing a tremendous shot beyond the reach of Alnwick into the far corner to level things up.
United weren't done there and when Alnwick failed to connect properly with a corner, Edwards hooked the ball towards goal only to see it rattle the bar. In a bid to stem the tide, Saints boss Stephen Robinson made a double change of his own, Conor McCarthy and Alex Greive replacing Henderson and Kiltie. The subs did ease the pressure on the home defence before another double change came with Curtis Main and Ethan Erhahon replacing Brophy and Alan Power.
McCarthy almost made an impact at the other end as he sent a shot wide from long range but that just paved the way for some late drama. As Watt raced in on goal, Alnwick came out of his box and clattered the United striker, ref Nick Walsh sending the goalie off and Lyness replaced Greive for the four minutes of stoppage time. To the relief of the majority of the 5,710 crowd, Charlie Mulgrew rattled his free-kick into the wall and his attempt from the rebound trundled well wide.

And that seemed to be that – until deep into stoppage time United launched one last attack. A stramash ensued, the ball hit the bar and dropped kindly for McNulty to head into the net and give the visitors all three points.

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson has said it's time for everyone to step up in the race for a top six spot.
Just three matches remain in the cinch Premiership before the league split and only one point separates ninth-place Saints from Hibernian in fourth.
Dundee United are the visitors to the SMiSA Stadium tomorrow, with the Buddies level on points with Tayside outfit.
It's very much all to play for for the top six," the manager said speaking with the press. "Every manager will be saying the same.
"We have no divine right to be in it. We haven't been in it for a long time. It's now time to step up and these three games will make or break whether you make top six or not.
"We've got three games. Whether six points will take you into the top six, whether four points will do it, nobody knows. All we can control is what we can do.
"They're [Dundee United] an organised side and hard to break down so it's up to us to try and take what we have from the last two games where we created a lot of chances.
"We're at home," the manager continued.
"Hopefully we'll have a big crowd behind us again which we had at Tynecastle. We've got to take the game to them, press them high up the pitch and try to get the result that we need."
Saints are set to be without Jordan Jones tomorrow, while Matt Millar could remain out for the remainder of the season.
Jordan fell on his shoulder in the first couple of minutes on Saturday,” Robinson said.
"We’ve had him scanned and he is a big, big doubt for Saturday.
"Matt Millar as well could be out for the rest of the season with something he picked up just after I came in."

Connor Ronan has received his first senior call-up for the Republic of Ireland ahead of their upcoming internationals against Belgium and Lithuania.
The 24-year-old - on loan from English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers - has been in fine form for Saints this season - netting eight goals in 25 appearances from midfield.
He joins the likes of Alex Greive (New Zealand), Jay Henderson (Scotland U21s) and Dylan Reid (Scotland U17s) to have received a call-up for the upcoming international break.
Everyone at St Mirren is delighted for Connor on his well-deserved call-up.
The race for top six heats up with Saints hosting Dundee United at the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.
Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.
The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.
Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.
Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.
St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.
We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.
Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

It's been nine years to the day since St Mirren defeated Hearts 3-2 at Hampden Park to lift the League Cup for the first time.
17th March, for so long known as St Patrick's Day, was rechristened St Mirren's Day in Paisley following the Buddies triumph in 2013.
Craig Samson, David Van Zanten, Marc McAusland, Jim Goodwin, Paul Dummett, John McGinn, Paul McGowan, Conor Newton, Gary Teale, Esmael Goncalves and Steven Thompson were the starting line-up of a St Mirren team that will be forever remembered in the annals of history.
But it wasn't achieved the easy way - this is St Mirren after all!
Saints fell behind on just 10 minutes when Ryan Stevenson fired Hearts ahead. Goncalves - who achieved cult-hero status during his loan from Rio Ave - scored eight minutes before half-time to draw the Buddies level.
And within a minute of the restart, Thompson put Danny Lennon's side in-front. Conor Newton scored on 66 minutes to extend the lead - sending the travelling Saints into raptures.
Stevenson pulled one back with a little over five minutes remaining to create a nervy end, but St Mirren held on and ensured the trophy would be heading back to Paisley.
Thompson - a lifelong Saint - lived the dream of every supporter when he scored in the final.
Speaking to the assembled press after the match, Steven said: "I've been running it through in my head, running through my goal and running to the fans, running through winning the cup.
To say that I've been thinking about it would be an understatement, it's been pretty much all-consuming in my mind for the last three weeks.
"There's no doubt I visualised what happened today and thankfully it came true.
"As the manager said at half-time, it was written in the stars for me.
"In a strange way, I'm glad it's all over so I can actually get some other thoughts into my head now.
"It's massive for the supporters. I'm a supporter myself, I know loads and loads of supporters and for them it's a massive, massive day.
"And I'm just so pleased that we were able to deliver it for them because my main worry was we wouldn't do it for all these people.
"The amount of well-wishers I've had to my door, I just thought 'we need to do it, we need to do it for these guys'. And we've done it. And it will make an awful lot of people happy.
"I think there's a relief because I knew what it meant to the supporters, being one myself and being in a local village where there are hundreds of St Mirren fans, thousands maybe.
"I was well aware of what was at stake and I'm just so happy we have been able to deliver for the supporters. It's a wonderful moment for the club."
Steven Thompson celebrates after putting St Mirren ahead in the League Cup Final.
Danny Lennon became the first St Mirren manager since Alex Smith in 1987 to guide Saints to a national trophy.
His pride after the match was in achieving it for our town.
In the immediate aftermath, he said to the BBC: "I really thought it was the people's final.
I'm delighted for every single one of them and my board of directors for having the faith in me and giving me the opportunity to deliver this to the people of Paisley.
"This will live long in the memories of these players, their families and supporters. I'm delighted we've done it for Paisley."

It's all to play for with just three matches remaining until the cinch Premiership split.
