Remembering Those That Have Passed

Our final home league match of the season will take place on Wednesday 11th May when we play host to Livingston at the SMiSA Stadium.

As we do every year we will be remembering all the St Mirren supporters that have sadly passed away throughout season 2021/22.

If you would like the name of someone who has passed away this season to be included on the big screen during the applause or on the website then please email scoreboard@stmirren.com by Tuesday 10th May.

Our thoughts to all the families who have lost loved ones throughout the season.

Up Next: St Mirren v Hibernian (23rd April)

St Mirren are back in action this weekend as the season heads towards its conclusion.

There are just five league matches remaining and Stephen Robinson's men begin that run by hosting managerless Hibernian at the SMiSA Stadium with focus on finishing best of the rest in the bottom half of the cinch Premiership.

Saints head into the split two points off seventh place - currently occupied by Hibernian and a win on Saturday would see the Buddies leapfrog the Leith club.

The Hibees will be led by David Gray following the departure of Shaun Maloney earlier this week. The former Scotland international was sacked following defeats in the cinch Premiership and Scottish Cup to rivals Heart of Midlothian.

Stephen McGinn to be inducted into the St Mirren Hall of Fame

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Stephen McGinn will be inducted into the St Mirren Hall of Fame at our Player of the Year Awards Dinner in May.

A firm fans favourite and former captain, Stephen made 203 appearances for St Mirren across two spells at the club.

He made his Saints debut in 2007 after coming through the ranks as a youth at the club. The highlight of his first spell came in November 2008 when he scored the winner in our last ever game against Rangers at Love Street.

Stephen would move on in January 2010 as he joined English side Watford for an undisclosed fee. After spells with Shrewsbury Town, Sheffield United, Dundee and Wycombe Wanderers, he returned to Paisley to join Saints for a second time in January 2017.

Quickly given the captain's armband by then manager Jack Ross, Stephen played an integral part in our 'Great Escape' in 2017 with the Buddies securing survival in the Championship on the final day of the 2016/17 season after a 1-1 draw against Hibernian at Easter Road. He was also instrumental the following season and secured his status in St Mirren's history as captain of the side that won the Championship and promotion back to the Premiership in 2018.

Speaking to stmirren.com, Stephen said: "Over both my spells here I just loved my time and I'm really proud of the accolade.

"Both were totally different spells, but both I think of as big successes."

Stephen will join John Sutton, Peter Godfrey and Billy Thomson as the 2022 inductees into the St Mirren Hall of Fame.

Chairman's Update - John Needham

When I wrote my last update at Christmas, I couldn’t possibly have foreseen such a tumultuous three months ahead.

We had just managed a creditable draw against Celtic with a COVID ravaged squad to end a long run of poor results. Who would have predicted such an uplift in form in the early days after the winter break, a change of Management team, the retirement of our CEO and then a dip in results that ultimately dashed our hopes of a top six slot again? Even those of us who have experienced the many highs and lows of being a Saints fan over the years would have struggled to have foreseen such a sequence of events.

As a Board we were naturally sad to see Jim and Lee move on, but we were delighted to recruit Stephen and Diarmuid so quickly to replace them. I know early results have been disappointing, but I remain confident that they will turn things around and deliver a team that continues the progress of recent years. Their record in Scottish football was what attracted us to them and generated such positivity on their appointment. Not only did they enjoy considerable success on the park, but they also integrated exciting young players into their teams, and I believe that fits with our history and strategy as a Club.

I’m as disappointed as any fan at recent results but I keep reminding myself that last year’s seventh placing was our best in decades. We want to maintain and build on that standard, but football can be such an unpredictable sport as we all know. All I can ask is that you maintain your loyal support to help the team through this sticky patch.

31st March marked the end of an era when Tony Fitzpatrick retired from his role as CEO. I’m sure you will all join me in thanking Tony for his loyalty and hard work over the years. His service as a player (twice), Manager (twice) and CEO is unlikely to be replicated at any club. Whilst he will continue as an Ambassador after a short break, I hope he and Maureen enjoy a long and happy retirement.

We have confirmed that Keith Lasley will be joining us from Motherwell in mid-May to take on the role of Chief Operating Officer. I am absolutely delighted with this appointment and excited to welcome Keith to St Mirren. We received a large number of applications for the role and Keith was selected from a very strong shortlist. He is currently studying for a Masters degree and is ambitious to forge a career in high level management in football. Also his wide experience at Motherwell, another fan-owned Club, means he is a great fit for us. I’m really looking forward to working with Keith and know he will bring great energy and insight to the Club.

As we look forward to the final fixtures, we are already making plans for next year and that includes the vexed question of whether to continue providing two stands to Rangers and Celtic at the SMISA Stadium. This is attracting increased comment from our fans so in line with our position as a majority fan owned club, I have invited a small group of fans with to consider the issue. They will report back in the next couple of weeks ahead of us planning for next season.

Finally, I’m sure you all understand that the final five fixtures are vital for the Club as we aim to finish as high in the league as possible. We all feel it when results are not going our way but I’m sure you will get behind the team for these games. Please come along and back the team for the final push. Your vocal support is so important and is really appreciated by the players and staff.

Thanks for your support!

Keith Lasley to join St Mirren as Chief Operating Officer

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Keith Lasley will join the club as Chief Operating Officer in mid-May ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Keith takes on the newly created role following the retirement of Chief Executive Officer Tony Fitzpatrick last month and will be responsible for managing all Club operations as well as assisting the board in setting the overall vision and strategy moving forward.

A well-known face in Scottish football, Keith enjoyed a distinguished playing career in which he made almost 500 appearances for Motherwell as well as having spells in England with Plymouth Argyle and Blackpool.

Before joining Motherwell as a 19-year-old, Keith had played for Paisley side Gleniffer Thistle.

After retiring as a player in 2017, Keith took on the role of Assistant Manager at the Steelmen and is currently undertaking a Masters degree in Sports Directorship.

Keith commented: "I have always been ambitious and driven throughout my football career.

"To prepare for the next phase of my leadership career in football I am currently undertaking a Masters of Sport Directorship at Manchester Metropolitan University. St Mirren, my hometown team, have provided me with an incredible opportunity to realise my ambitions in the role of Chief Operating Officer.

"My on-the-job experience at Motherwell and academic learning have provided me with the skills to be a success in this role and be part of the leadership that will drive St Mirren forward and fulfil the massive potential this club has.

"Having being part of a fan-owned club, which sits at the heart of the community and has set high standards in how to operate, both on and off the park, I look forward to bringing my positive experiences to generate further fans and strengthen community engagement. I believe these are essential components to the success of St Mirren.

"I am excited to be working alongside the St Mirren board and staff in delivering a progressive vision for St Mirren Football Club."

St Mirren Chairman John Needham said: "I am absolutely delighted with this appointment to one of the key positions at the Club.

"We received a large number of applications for the role and Keith was selected from a very strong shortlist.

"He is currently studying for a Masters degree and is ambitious to forge a career in high level management in football. Also his wide experience at Motherwell, another fan-owned Club, means he is a great fit for us.

"I’m really looking forward to working with Keith and know he will bring great energy and insight to the Club."
