Roland Idowu to join St Mirren on permanent basis

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Roland Idowu will join the club on a permanent deal on Sunday 15th June following the expiry of his loan agreement.

After a successful loan spell during 2024/25, the Irish forward will officially join Saints from English side Shrewsbury Town next month for an undisclosed fee until summer 2027.

The 23-year-old made 36 appearances for the Buddies and scored four goals, including the winner against Ross County that secured our third consecutive top six finish.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "Roland is a very talented player and offers us something different. He can play in numerous positions and gives us a creative outlet that we have maybe missed at times.

"It took him a little bit of time to adjust to the levels here, but you could see towards the end of the season that he was reaching those levels and had become an important player for us.

There was a lot of interest in Roland from other Scottish Premiership and English League One sides so I’m delighted we’ve managed to get him here on a permanent deal."

2024/25 Squad Update

Following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, the club can now provide supporters with a squad update.

The core of the squad remains in place, with a number of players contracted for the upcoming season.

St Mirren Player of the Year, Killian Phillips will become a permanent addition, as we trigger our obligation to buy. The 23-year-old, who has just received his first call up for Republic of Ireland, will be under contract until summer 2026. The club also holds a year option to extend the deal until summer 2027. St Mirren Youth Academy graduate Luke Kenny has also agreed a one-year contract extension.

We say goodbye to Dennis Adeniran, Caolan Boyd-Munce, Elvis Bwomono, Owen Foster, Gallagher Lennon and Richard Taylor who will all move on following the expiry of their contracts. We thank all departing players for their respective contributions and wish them all the best of luck in whatever comes next.

Ryan Alebiosu, Zach Hemming and Roland Idowu all return to their respective parent clubs following the expiry of their loan deals. Discussions are ongoing with all three players’ parent clubs as we look to bring them back to the club for next season. [UPDATE] Roland Idowu will join the club on a permanent deal on Sunday 15th June following the expiry of his loan agreement.

The club is continuing the hard work behind the scenes to add to the core of players already under contract for next season.

Under Contract 2025/26

Scott Tanser, Alex Iacovitti, Mark O’Hara, Jonah Ayunga, Oisin Smyth, Mikael Mandron, Conor McMenamin, Greg Kiltie, Roland Idowu, Alex Gogic, James Scott, Owen Oseni, Marcus Fraser, Declan John, Luke Kenny, Peter Urminsky, Callum Penman, Fraser Taylor, Evan Mooney, Killian Phillips.

Leaving the club

Dennis Adeniran, Caolan Boyd-Munce, Elvis Bwomono, Owen Foster, Gallagher Lennon and Richard Taylor.

Returning to parent club

Zach Hemming and Ryan Alebiosu.

Luke Kenny agrees contract extension

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Luke Kenny has agreed a one-year contract extension that will keep him under contract until summer 2026.

The 21-year-old defender made his Scottish Premiership debut this season as a substitute in our 3-2 win away to St Johnstone in December and made further appearances in our Scottish Cup tie at home to Hearts in February as well as our 5-1 win over Kilmarnock in March.

The St Mirren Youth Academy graduate has made five appearances all in during his time at Saints and had a successful loan spell at NIFL Premiership side Cliftonville during 2023/24 where he was part of their Irish Cup winning squad.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "We had hoped to get Luke out on loan in January, but injuries meant we needed to keep him around.

We believe Luke can become a good Scottish Premiership defender, but he needs games.

"We’ve given him a new contract with a view to sending him out on loan to get much-needed game time at a good level to help aid his development before coming back to compete for a place here."

St Mirren draw away to Celtic as season comes to a close

St Mirren ended season 2024/25 with a draw away to Celtic as James Forrest's injury-time goal cancelled out Jonah Ayunga's opener for Saints.

The point wouldn't be enough to snatch that final European place following Dundee United's win over Aberdeen.

Captain Mark O'Hara returned to the starting lineup in the only change from Wednesday night's draw against Hibernian with Roland Idowu dropping to the bench as Saints ended the campaign at Celtic Park for the second successive season.

The hosts were on top in the opening 15 minute in terms of possession, but Saints looked threatening when they were able to get forward. Neither team could fashion a clear-cut chance, although Engles in-swinging corners were dangerous.

The first test for either goalkeeper came after 25 minutes. A well worked move ended up in head tennis inside the Celtic box, before Mikael Mandron’s tight-angled volley was comfortably caught by Kasper Schmeichel.

Hald-chances for Celtic came and went; McGregor’s shot was high and wayward, and crosses were dealt with by the defensive unit, which held strong. Ryan Alebiosu particularly dealt well with Premiership Player of the Year Maeda.

Saints took the lead six minutes after the restart. A wide free kick from Declan John wasn't dealt with by Liam Scales whose header would only fall as far as Jonah Ayunga who slammed beyond Schmeichel to score his second goal in the last three games.

Jonah Ayunga celebrates against Celtic

Following the goal, Celtic made a raft of changes with Luke McCowan, Hyunjun Yang and Forrest replacing Adam Idah, Paulo Bernardo and Nicolas Kuhn. The hosts would have lots of territorial and ball possession, but little in the way of shots. The shots they did have were blocked well by the Buddies backline.

Celtic should have found themselves level on 65 minutes when substitute Forrest swung the ball into the box and onto the head of Daizen Maeda who somehow headed over from just a few yards out.

Saints looked threatening on the counter with substitute Roland Idowu's ability to carry the ball well seeing him a danger. A searching cross from Scott Tanser found the Irishman in the Celtic box. He twisted and turned to fashion the space but could only fire into the arms of Schmeichel.

The hosts ramped up the pressure heading into the closing stages and it was only some terrific goalkeeping from Zach Hemming that initially kept them at bay. The shot-stopper made a double save to deny Johnny Kenny after the forward had run clear of the Saints defence, before following up with a big stop from the resulting corner to push away Yang's overhead kick.

But unfortunately Celtic would draw level in the fourth minute of added on time. Saints failed to clear their lines and that allowed Alastair Johnston to slide the ball through to the unmarked Forrest who slotted beyond Hemming to secure a share of the spoils for the Hoops on the day they lifted the William Hill Premiership title.

For Saints, a point wasn't enough in the end to secure European football for a second successive season, but with 50 points on the board, and remaining unbeaten in the top six, there will be immense pride in what Stephen Robinson, his staff and players have achieved this campaign.

Match Preview: Celtic v St Mirren (17th May)

St Mirren close out 2024/25 with our Euro hopes going to the final day when we face Celtic at Celtic Park.

Saints came from behind to draw 2-2 with Hibernian on Wednesday night. But we remain a point behind Dundee United who occupy the final European spot heading into the last day.

Stephen Robinson's side must better Dundee United's result if they want to ensure qualification for the UEFA Conference League. However, a win for the Arabs at home to Aberdeen on Saturday would render any Saints result moot in the race for that final spot.

Tickets for Saturday's match are completely sold out.

Celtic v St Mirren
Competition: William Hill Premiership
Date: Saturday 17th May 2025
Kick-off: 12:30pm
Venue: Celtic Park

The Opposition

Celtic officially clinched the title in the first post-split fixture following a 5-0 win over Dundee United at Tannadice. But in truth it's been a foregone conclusion for many months given Brendan Rodgers' side's lead in the William Hill Premiership.

The Hoops go into Saturday's match on the back of a 5-1 win away to Aberdeen on Wednesday night. That result followed a 3-1 victory at home to Hibernian on Saturday.

Celtic have been victorious in all three meetings between the sides this season. Brendan Rodgers' side were 3-0 winners on our last trip to Celtic Park back in January. A valiant effort from Saints in the previous meeting at The SMiSA Stadium in March wasn't enough to take anything but the game was certainly closer than the 5-2 final scoreline suggests.

Our last win over Celtic came at The SMiSA Stadium in September 2022 when goals from Mark O'Hara and Jonah Ayunga saw us run out 2-0 victors. Our last win at Celtic Park was in January 2021 with goals from Kristian Dennis and Ilkay Durmus securing our first win in Parkhead since 1990.

David Dickinson is the referee on Saturday and his assistants are Ross Nelson and Steven Traynor.
