Match Preview: St Mirren v Kilmarnock (29th Mar)

St Mirren close out the month of March at home to Kilmarnock in the William Hill Premiership.

It's been a stop-start month for Saints with two breaks due to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals coming after our defeat to Celtic before the international break following our draw away to Motherwell.

Goals from Caolan Boyd-Munce and Killian Phillips saw Stephen Robinson's men draw 2-2 draw against the Steelmen at Fir Park.

The Buddies sit in eighth place in the William Hill Premiership, four points behind Hearts in sixth with three matches remaining before the split.

St Mirren v Kilmarnock
Competition: William Hill Premiership
Date: Saturday 29th March 2025
Kick-off: 3pm
Venue: The SMiSA Stadium

The Opposition

Kilmarnock sit three points behind Saints in the William Hill Premiership with Derek McInnes' side sitting in 10th place.

Fraser Murray scored an injury-time equaliser for Killie prior to the international break to take a point in a 1-1 draw with Hibernian at Rugby Park. That put a halt to a run of defeats after the Ayrshire side had lost to Ross County, Rangers and Aberdeen in their previous three matche.

The two sides couldn't be separated in the meeting between the two at The SMiSA Stadium this season. Goals from Toyosi Olusanya and Mark O'Hara twice had us ahead, but an own goal from Jonah Ayunga saw Kilmarnock take a share of the points in a 2-2 draw. A double from Bruce Anderson gave Killie victory in the last meeting as they won 2-0 at Rugby Park in January.

West Sports Students Gain Valuable Coaching Experience with St Mirren FC Academy

West College Scotland is proud to be working in partnership with St Mirren Football Club’s academy, to offer their Sports students a unique and invaluable coaching internship. This opportunity enables students studying HNC Coaching & Developing Sports at their Paisley campus to develop their coaching skills in a professional football environment, working alongside experienced academy staff to support youth player development.

Through this internship, students gain hands-on experience in key areas such as coaching principles, session planning, and player progression. By immersing themselves in a professional football setup, they enhance their understanding of the demands of elite coaching while contributing to the development of young talent within the St Mirren FC academy.

Lecturer, Gary Murray said: "This partnership with St Mirren FC provides our students with an incredible opportunity to learn from some of the best in the industry. It bridges the gap between education and real-world experience, equipping our students with the skills and knowledge they need to pursue successful careers in sports coaching."

The club’s academy staff have welcomed the involvement of West College Scotland’s students, recognising the mutual benefits of fresh perspectives and eager learners contributing to the programme.

HND Coaching and Developing Sports student, Charlie Owens said: "The St Mirren coaching internship has enabled me to expand my coaching knowledge within a professional setting. The coaches and staff have been nothing but welcoming and supportive throughout my time, and I’m excited to continue my development until the end of the season."

Patrick Bianchi also studying HND Coaching and Developing Sports said: "The placement at St. Mirren has been an exciting journey, allowing me to develop my skills in a professional football environment. The experience has given me essential insights and a great appreciation for the game behind the scenes."

Scott Galloway, Head of Academy Coaching & Player Development at St Mirren FC said: "Our Academy Student Placement programme sits as part of our long-term sustainable staffing strategy. Patrick and Charlie went through an interview process where they were up against 100+ student applicants, from 7 academic institutes.

Both students have demonstrated a willingness to learn and engage young people on their development journey. We hope this placement has provided them with both an insight and learning opportunity that will support them in their own long-term development."

This programme is one that in a number of years will support St Mirren FC in becoming a sustainable, leading, Elite Youth Academy in Scotland. Whilst also offering an opportunity to expose young aspiring professionals to the demands of this type of work.

Scott continued: "We at the Club are grateful for the support of Claire Whitelaw and Gary Murray at West College Scotland for their advocacy, without champions on that side of the partnership it simply would not be possible."

Together, West College Scotland and the Academy have been able to send the 'escalator back down' for those who are now walking the same path many of us did when we first started out."

This collaboration highlights West College Scotland’s commitment to providing industry-relevant opportunities for its students, ensuring they graduate with the practical experience needed to succeed in the competitive world of sports coaching.

Alex Iacovitti looking for strong end to the season after return from injury

Alex Iacovitti made his long-awaited return to action in last weekend's 2-2 draw with Motherwell.

The defender had been sidelined since January with his second hamstring injury of the campaign.

Now he's back and is looking for a strong end to the season.

St Mirren ASN team visit first team at Training Ground

In partnership with The Advisory Group Renfrewshire, the St Mirren FC Charitable Foundation run the St Mirren Additional Support Needs (ASN) Football Team.

Open to all those with ASN, the team is comprised of a wide range of abilities, from those training for the Special Olympics, to beginners trying football for the first time.

On Tuesday, players from the ASN team visited the St Mirren Training Ground at Ralston and got to watch some training as well as having the opportunity to meet first-team players and staff.

Emma Smith is the St Mirren Foundation Football Development Lead as well as being Head Coach of the ASN Team.

I really appreciate the players and manager taking time out of their day to come and meet our players. They’ve put smiles on the boys' faces."

Emma continued: "The boys have done brilliantly so far this season, picking up wins to start our campaign. Last week they played brilliantly to pick up the trophies, beating Partick Thistle in the Final."

The team came close to success last season, narrowly missing out on the league title, but picked up a couple of trophies last week. Along with first-team players, manager Stephen Robinson was there to hand out medals and congratulate the ASN team for their success.

ASN team defender Ryan Riley is a St Mirren season ticket holder.

I love St Mirren so it means a lot to me to represent them," he said.

"I wouldn’t want to play for anyone else.

"My favourite player is Mark O’Hara, so to get the chance to meet and chat to the captain is amazing.

"We have done well so far this season," he continued. "I hope we can keep winning. Stephen Robinson congratulated us on our trophy win, so that will spur us on to do it again."

Emma added: "Today has been great for our players.

It shows how connected the club is, it feels like a family."

St Mirren Charitable Foundation runs Additional Support Needs football sessions twice a week. If you would like to find out more about, or to book a session, please visit the website smfcfoundation.co.uk.

Toyosi Olusanya opens the scoring against Dundee

10-man Saints held as points are shared at Fir Park

10-man St Mirren had to settle for a share of the spoils as Motherwell fought back from 2-0 to claim a point at Fir Park.

Goals from Caolan Boyd-Munce and Killian Phillips had the Buddies two ahead in the first-half. But a double from Callum Slattery saw the Steelmen draw level before Toyosi Olusanya was given his marching orders for what the referee had deemed a second bookable offence.

Alex Iacovitti made his first start since January following a hamstring injury. He replaced Richard Taylor who dropped to the bench. Jonah Ayunga also returned after an ankle knock had ruled him out of our last match against Celtic. The forward came in for the injured Mikael Mandron who is set for four weeks on the sidelines

A fast start to the match saw Motherwell passed up a glorious opportunity to open the scoring a little over 60 seconds from kick-off. Alex Gogic tripped and that allowed Tom Sparrow to race through on goal, but the forward lifted his effort over both Zach Hemming and the bar.

Saints responded well and missed their own opportunity to strike first five minutes later. Ayunga slipped Ryan Alebiosu in down the right-hand side and the wing-back charged into the area. He had options in the middle but elected to go alone, firing high and wide from the angle.

The Buddies took the lead on 23 minutes when Boyd-Munce's deflected effort wrong-footed Ellery Balcombe and found the net. Olusanya broke through but was quickly crowded out as he looked to get a shot away. He turned away from the area and laid it off to Boyd-Munce whose strike from 20 yards took a wild deflection before nestling in the corner of the net. There was a VAR check for a potential offside on Olusanya but it showed the striker had held his line and the goal stood.

Caolan Boyd-Munce scores opener against Motherwell

The Buddies were well in control and extended the lead further 10 minutes later following a wonderful strike from Phillips. A cross from the left found the Irishman who took the ball down on his chest before sending an acrobatic strike beyond Balcombe from 15 yards to make it 2-0.

Killian Phillips celebrates goal against Motherwell

But the home side hit back almost instantly with Slattery pulling a goal back straight from kick-off. The midfielder took the ball down well before finishing with the outside of his boot from the edge of the area.

Saints came agonisingly close to regaining the two goal advantage when Balcombe failed to gather a corner and that allowed Gogic to get his head on it only for the effort to drift inches by the post.

Lennon Miller almost restored parity as the game headed into the first of three added minutes at the end of the half. Dom Thompson's ball across found the midfielder who took a touch before lashing high and wide.

Olusanya was presented with an opportunity early after the restart when Casey didn't get enough on his header and gave it straight to the Saints forward. Olusanya drove forward but sent his strike high and wide.

There was real concern in the second-half for Boyd-Munce after a collision saw the Northern Irishman have to be stretchered off following a lengthy delay where he received treatment from the St Mirren medical team. The manager confirmed afterwards that the midfielder received a concussion.

Motherwell drew themselves level when Slattery's low deflected effort from 20 yards snuck beyond Hemming with 20 minutes of normal time remaining.

Olusanya was sent off on 85 minutes after being shown a second yellow card after colliding with Casey. It was a highly contentious decision with the forward bemused about the decision that looked nothing more than a natural coming together between two players.

That meant Saints would have to see the remainder of the match out with a man disadvantage, and with 14 minutes of time added on, that looked like it would be no easy feat. But in truth it was Stephen Robinson's men who looked the most likely to grab a winner - Gogic coming so close to winning it in the 101st minute when he rose highest to meet a Scott Tanser corner but headed over as we had to accept just a point at Fir Park.

The Buddies head into the international break sitting in eighth place on 35 points - four points behind sixth place Hearts with matches against Kilmarnock, Dundee and Ross County to come before the split.

Squad update ahead of Motherwell trip

Manager Stephen Robinson has today confirmed that Mikael Mandron is set to miss up to four weeks of action.

The French striker was substituted in the second-half of our William Hill Premiership defeat against Celtic at the start of the month after picking up a medial knee ligament injury. He joins Evan Mooney on the sidelines after the 17-year-old underwent surgery on his ankle.

However, Alex Iacovitti is set to return following his hamstring injury, while Conor McMenamin is progressing, though won't be ready until after the upcoming international break.

Speaking to the media ahead of Saturday's trip to Motherwell, the manager said: "Mikael Mandron will be out for about four weeks now with medial knee ligament injury.

"Evan Mooney has had really successful surgery on his ankle, but that will be him for the rest of the season now ready for next season. It was a decision that we had to make for both parties, for the club going forward and for Evan.

"Other than that, Alex Iacovitti had trained really well and played a couple of bounce games.

"Conor McMenamin is making progress and will be on the pitch after the international break but won't be available for this game."

Match Preview: Motherwell v St Mirren (15th Mar)

St Mirren return to William Hill Premiership action on Saturday with Stephen Robinson's men heading to Fir Park to face Motherwell.

Saints were beaten 5-2 by league leaders Celtic last time out, but the scoreline didn't reflect the strong performance from the Buddies who were denied a penalty late in the game with the score at 2-3.

Stephen Robinson's side have won two, drawn one and lost three of our last six matches in the William Hill Premiership. With just four matches remaining before the split, Saints are still in the hunt for a third consecutive top six finish, sitting three points behind Motherwell who sit in sixth place.

The Opposition

Motherwell go into Saturday's match on a high under new manager Daniel Wimmer.

After a narrow defeat away to Dundee United in the German's first match, the Steelmen have won their last two league matches - beating Rangers 2-1 at Ibrox and as well as a 2-1 victory at home to Dundee. That has propelled the Fir Park side to sixth place in the William Hill Premiership.

The 'Well have come out on top on both occasions in the two meetings between the sides this season. A controversial match at Fir Park in September saw the Lanarkshire side win 2-1 before an injury-time goal from Tony Watt gave them a 1-0 win at The SMiSA Stadium in December.
