Club Statement

St Mirren Football Club is disappointed with the outcome of the SPFL disciplinary hearing into the circumstances surrounding our postponed fixtures against Motherwell and Hamilton.

The hearing found St Mirren guilty of breaching protocols and subsequently imposed 3-0 wins to both Motherwell and Hamilton alongside a £40,000 fine, suspended until June 2021

The club operated honestly throughout the whole process and will review its position before issuing a further response.

Looking Back Over Lockdown - St Mirren Charitable Foundation

Whilst I am writing, I find it hard to believe that we are now in November with only five weeks until Christmas, what an extraordinary and surreal year this has been so far.

As we rapidly approach the end of 2020 we wanted to take the time to remember everything that has happened since March in acknowledgement and gratitude for everyone who has given support to the Foundation, thus enabling us to serve our community to the best of our ability.

I have looked through the past eight months of photographs, emails, messages and stats to try to ensure no-one is overlooked but if I have missed thanking anyone please be reassured that it is not a slight nor is it intentional.

In the weeks prior to the 23rd March we were actively delivering nine programmes (with an additional three due to launch) which had to be adapted and transitioned from in-house to digital form online. This was a challenging period but it also provided us with the opportunity to be innovative and creative and come up with interesting, practical solutions.

Our team quickly set up webinars and seminars for all our educational and group support sessions as well as pre-recorded and live workouts for our adult participants. To ensure the provision of essential mental wellbeing support we created extra WhatsApp groups, set up Zoom calls, sent out emails and carried out one-to-one ‘check in’ telephone calls with everyone in our database. On average over 1000 contacts were made per week. These various lines of communication were key in identifying which individuals or families would benefit from added support whether that be food & essential items, financial advice, mental health assistance, simple befriender calls or help with childcare & home schooling.

This would have been the time that we were preparing for our Kids Easter Camp and we had been contacted by so many families within Renfrewshire asking for help to keep kids entertained and engaged at home as many were living in accommodation with no outdoor play areas or gardens. Children were struggling being at home in the good weather and missing their friends and school.

Our coaches designed a three-month activity schedule, for children between the ages of 3-12 years, delivered via our social media platforms which involved arts & crafts, challenges, quizzes, football drills & exercises, reading & poetry, home baking, gardening and much more.

The feedback we received from families on those activities was very positive and, as it became apparent that we were all going to be in Lockdown during the summer holidays, inspired our first ever online Summer Camp in partnership with Linstone Housing. The camp ran throughout the month of July and was completely free for the 100 children & families who took part.

We asked our community partners to refer children who would most benefit from being given a place and then our amazing head coaches designed a downloadable e-book and recorded over 60 videos with links which were then sent to parents for the children to use each day. The quality of these resources were outstanding, and I can’t praise the team enough for their commitment to making it a success.

Our next task was to ensure that every one of the 100 children referred to us were given the equipment they would need to take part and so we created our ‘Buddie Boxes’. Each box contained a football, markers, cones, t-shirt, water bottle, balloons, Babakoochi Bear book, arts & crafts and kit bag. These were hand delivered to each child before camp kicked off. This project had a very positive impact on these children and families. We cannot thank Linstone Housing enough for their support and for funding this project and we look to repeat it on a larger scale next summer.

From day one of lockdown in March we formed a strong partnership with Star Project, who we already share a project with on our Men’s Shed, and agreed we would deliver essential community outreach & provision of food, hygiene items, medicines etc. St Mirren FC Charitable Foundation pledged to secure food partners covering the bulk of the items needed, to raise awareness and create a call to action from our supporters in the community to donate essential items and to volunteer their time to deliver food parcels via the community fridges.

We were very fortunate in securing food partners and pay particular thanks to the following individuals and local companies for their overwhelming kindness & support: Mannorview Leisure, Tesco Paisley, Starbucks GA, Gillian Robinson of Company Shop Renfrew, A&A Bakeries, George Naismith of Abercorn Dairies, Joe Ram Key Store in Shortroods, Gary McCaw of Bianco E Nero along with Mr Michael Campbell & his associates throughout Renfrewshire, Langcraigs FC and Partick Thistle FC.

We would liaise with Star on a Monday morning to clarify which items were most needed for the week ahead. These items were identified from the crisis calls that were coming into Star on daily basis. We would then post the lists on our social media platforms and contact our food partners. The next step would be to collect all of the items from those food partners and from households within the community wishing to donate and then transport all of these to Star Project where their team would organise and sort shopping lists to then be transported and delivered to homes, families and individuals in need.

On average 35+ calls per day were made to Star’s community fridge project, this equated to 200+ households per week being supported with the total number of food parcels being delivered in excess of 6,000.

I cannot commend Heather Kay and all the amazing team at Star Project enough. The work they have carried out during this very challenging time has definitely saved lives. Our partnership has now turned into a deep and mutually respectful friendship and they are all honorary Saints. We would respectfully pay tribute to the lovely Iain Downie, one of our Shedder’s and Star’s lead volunteer who was at the project every single day since March and who sadly passed away several weeks ago, he was a wonderful man who will be greatly missed.

My fondest memories during the first 12 weeks of lockdown were our “Saints of The Day”. Every single one of those people who contacted me on a daily basis and asked us to pick up donations of food and essential items from their homes, during a time that was clearly so difficult for them and when they were very isolated and alone, I will honestly never forget it.

The kindness, consideration and empathy these amazing people showed during this period will stay with us forever and I have pictures of you all and I know all your names but there are simply too many to list. Thank you to every one of you and particular thanks must go to Janette Swanson who week-in, week-out would rally her entire street to donate, and still does, and to Mike & Annette Whalen who again donated every week without fail even when Mike was so gravely ill with coronavirus. We can never thank you enough.

We cannot thank our Saints of The Day without thanking the team at St Mirren FC. To Tony for all of the messages of hope he created for the Foundation to those fans who were struggling mentally and to all of the players who did the same, and who donated percentages of their wages to show support. Thank you, you are amazing.

We will be forever grateful to Jim Goodwin and James Hunter. I don’t think many Premiership football managers tirelessly donated their time during this pandemic like Jim. Every Thursday of lockdown, without exception, he would volunteer to help us pick up essential goods, take them to Star and then deliver the food parcels to households across Renfrewshire and James, our Head of Media, would often be with him. In the afternoons we would ‘Make A Saints Day’ by visiting the homes of families, socially distanced of course, who had reached out to us for help with loved ones who were ill and very low mentally. Witnessing how much these visits from Jim meant to these incredible people was very moving and humbling, memories they and we will treasure for life.

The loss of income we experienced during this period from non-delivery of in-house programmes was considerable and, as the Foundation is still a fledging charity, had a negative impact on our financial position.

It was at this time that fans of St Mirren FC and our service users stepped up to the plate to create, organise and inspire hilarious fundraising ideas to boost our morale and to show their support: Ian Brown & his lovely friend Paul who started off the antics with their charity chest waxing and also auctioned off precious shirts, Jamie Langfield for his shirt auction, the brilliant ‘Stripes on Friday’ where we saw all the fans don their strips and donate to our JustGiving page (loved this), Drums N’ Roses for their live charity set in the stadium, Gary Kerr for kicking off our ‘Straight Outta Paisley’ T-Shirt sales with his kind donation, SMiSA for their kind donation to our page & continued support, the Disabled Fans Council who generously donated and allowed us to grant the wish list of Elderslie Care Home, Ian Henderson of Henderson Properties for his generous donation and Paul McGrath of Consilium for his constant support, all of these random acts of kindness made a huge difference to the team & myself and definitely helped get us through a challenging time.

In addition to the amazing fundraising from fans we were very fortunate to have the support of some exceptional funding partners & organisations, mostly down to the dedication & influence of our Chairman Ian Reid OBE. The financial backing and investment we received from these partners helped enable us to continue to support the community throughout the pandemic, to safeguard the jobs of employees and to protect the future of the Foundation.

We give thanks and acknowledgement to: The Robertson Trust, Foundation Scotland, Scot Gov Well-Being Fund & Corra Foundation, Persimmon Homes, Linstone Housing & the SPFL Trust, Scottish FA, Cruden Building & Homes, Network Rail & National Lottery Community Fund & The KiltWalk.

Renfrewshire is now in Tier 4 and we are preparing for the increased need for food provision once again, the essential items list will go out from Monday 23rd and, although we understand this has been a very difficult time for everyone, we welcome any and all support.

We are also organising our annual Festive Friends event for elderly and vulnerable people within Renfrewshire who face being alone on Christmas Day. It will be different this year as we cannot risk our guest’s health by bringing them to the stadium. Instead, we will go to them.

Kate Cooper and her catering team from the Salvation Army will prepare hot festive dinners here in the kitchens at the stadium. The SPFL Trust will donate Gift Boxes and funding for us to create Festive Hampers for each guest and we will secure additional funding to support the increased referrals we are receiving.

We will ensure that each guest also receives a special personalised gift from Father Christmas. The meals, hampers and gifts will then be delivered to each guest, who have been referred by our community partners, by ourselves and volunteers from Scottish Fire Service, later on in the evening our team will call each guest to make sure they are safe and to check in for a chat.

Referrals for our Festive Friends Santa Dash are now open and we welcome all of our community partners to send over their lists, we would also welcome help and ideas on which items should be included in the hampers and help with the sourcing and provision of these. Please email us at foundation@stmirren.com for more information.

All that is left to say now is please stay safe, look after yourselves and each other over the next 3 weeks, to remind you all that we are here to help support this community in any way we can, just email the address above to contact, and to wish you all a very healthy & Happy Christmas when it comes.

Thank you

St Mirren Football Club Statement

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that following the annual audit process where several historic issues were highlighted, both SMISA and Kibble representatives tabled a report with a recommended course of action. Subsequently these recommendations were approved at the November Board meeting and the Board of Directors initiated contact with relevant authorities.

These actions will facilitate that going forward all aspects of the club’s business practices are strong, compliant and transparent to all, whilst ensuring they meet the highest level possible to ensure the club’s reputation is utterly beyond reproach. The club has moved swiftly to appoint a highly reputable firm of accountants to carry out a thorough forensic review of its operations to allow for any required action to be acted upon. St Mirren football Club will co-operate fully in all aspects of the process and with all relevant authorities.

Tony Fitzpatrick, Chief Executive said: "The Club has taken these steps to ensure that we continue to operate on a sound and compliant financial basis. I would also like to put on record our appreciation of the invaluable work, continued commitment and support of our club accountant in this matter. Fans can be confident that all actions taken are in the best interest of St Mirren to ensure it continues to be a club of which our supporters can be proud."

We can reassure supporters that the club continues to operate strongly in the current pandemic climate and our club remains in a healthy and robust financial position.

St Mirren supporters raise £1000 for Poppyscotland

St Mirren supporters recently raised £1000 - which the club donated to Poppyscotland - following an online auction and raffle of signed special one-off match worn first-team shirts.

The first-team shirts were emblazoned with poppies in our Betfred Cup match at home to Morton to commemorate Remembrance Day 2020.

A home top that was signed by the entire first-team squad was put to auction where it was won by Gordon Clarke who bid £500.

The club then raffled off Jak Alnwick’s signed goalkeeper top on our e-store. This raised £460 with the club rounding up to £500.

Gordon Michie, Head of Fundraising at Poppyscotland said: "This has been an especially challenging Scottish Poppy Appeal with thousands of our volunteers forced to stay at home due to the pandemic.

"Because of that, the fantastic support we’ve received once again this year from St Mirren is even more important and will go a great way to enable Poppyscotland to continue providing our life-changing support to the Armed Forces community.

"Our sincere thanks go to all of the supporters who helped to raise the superb total."

The club would like to thank supporters for their generosity and showing their support for a worthy cause.

Manager's thoughts

"The players and staff are all in a good place at the moment because we're on a good run.

"Beating a team like Aberdeen, who are probably the third biggest in the country, and put in the level of performance that we did was outstanding.

"We're under no illusions that this weekend is going to be a completely different Aberdeen. I imagine they'll be really fired up and looking to put things right in their eyes so we have to be prepared for that.

"Our bread and butter is the league and it's important we back up the two most recent league games with another really good performance and result."

Who are the officials?

Bobby Madden is the referee for Saturday's match. He'll be assisted by David McGeachie and Paul O'Neill. Kevin Graham is the fourth official.

St Mirren drawn to face Rangers in Betfred Cup quarters

St Mirren have been drawn at home to face Rangers in the quarter-final of the Betfred Cup.

The match will take place at the SMiSA Stadium on either Tuesday 15th, Wednesday 16th or Thursday 17th December 2020.

Jim Goodwin's side progressed to the last eight following a well-deserved win over Aberdeen in the second-round.

Match Report: St Mirren 2-1 Aberdeen

Jamie McGrath's late winner sent St Mirren into the quarter-finals of the Betfred Cup.

The midfielder's strike was fumbled into the net by Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis to give Saints a well deserved 2-1 win.

The Buddies were at it from the get go and made the perfect start when the returning Ilkay Durmus netted his first goal of the season on four minutes. The winger, who has been missing with injury, marked his return to the starting line-up by slamming home from 20 yards.

The free-kick had come after terrific play from Dylan Connolly who went on a super driving run from the half-way line, bursting deep into the Aberdeen half before being halved by Jonny Hayes 20 yards from goal. Durmus made no mistake as he found the bottom corner of the net.

Saints were well on top and almost doubled their lead just three minutes later. Richard Tait cracked the post with a low effort from 25 yards with the rebound just evading Jon Obika allowing the visitors to clear.

The Buddies pressed for a second as time ticked away at the end of the first-half. On 38 minutes, Connolly did brilliantly to turn Greg Leigh and race clear on goal. Lewis was out quickly to block the shot but Aberdeen couldn't clear the danger. Cammy MacPherson sent the ball back across the face of goal where Durmus got a slight flick which was blocked by Leigh.

Obika should have made it 2-0 on 41 minutes but the forward turn and knocked wide under pressure from Dons goalkeeper Lewis.

How Saints would rue that miss as Aberdeen equalised less than two minutes later. A Hayes ball fell fortuitously for Niall McGinn who knocked beyond Alnwick from close range to level heading into half-time.

Aberdeen spurned a huge chance to go ahead early in the second-half. Thomas Hoban had loads of space to meet a Ryan Hedges corner but headed wide of target.

Saints, while not creating as much as they did in the first-half, still had the majority of the play. McGrath sent an effort well over on 52 minutes, while Durmus smashed into the side netting after jinking into the box five minutes later.

Heading into the final 10 minutes the Buddies upped the pressure. Marcus Fraser cut inside and shot into the arms of Lewis before substitute Morias was denied by a tremendous save from the Dons goalkeeper.

But it would count for nothing for the visitors as Saints would find the winner with two minutes of normal time remaining. McGrath took aim from distance with Lewis spilling into the back of the net to book Saints' place in the last eight.

Ethan Erhahon agrees new St Mirren contract

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Ethan Erhahon has agreed a contract extension which ties him to Saints until summer 2023.

The Saints Youth Academy graduate has been a standout in midfield for the Buddies this season making himself a regular with Jim Goodwin's side.

Ethan made his Saints debut at the age of 16 in a Challenge Cup match against Raith Rovers in October 2017.

The 19 year-old has since made over 40 appearances for first-team scoring two goals including a stunner against Aberdeen at Pittodrie last month.

Speaking to the press recently, St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin said: "Ethan is only 19 but has had a consistent run in the team in his favoured position.

"He is very mature in his playing style, he reads the game well, covers the ground and has a great range of passing.

"It’s important that we do everything we can to hold onto these young and talented players."

#BehindTheSaints Our Billboard Process

In our goal to make Paisley proud of its local team, we want St Mirren Football Club to have a strong, recognised presence within the community. We want to mark the gravitas St Mirren plays in the town’s history and celebrate the overwhelming support loyal fans show the club. The 2020/21 season is like no other, yet the fan support is unwavering.

St Mirren Belongs to Paisley

One great way to showcase St Mirren far and wide across Paisley has been to launch large traditional billboard placements across key Paisley locations. Loyal St Mirren fans will feel a sense of pride as the familiar black and white stripes capture their attention; locals who are football fanatics will be reminded of their homegrown team and be encouraged to show their support.

Be inspired to follow the Paisley football club and their youth development that has produced the talent of Lewis Morgan, Cammy MacPherson and Ethan Erhahon.

Visualisation

It takes time to decide on what to visually promote. What do we want to communicate to our fans?

Recent times have been challenging for everyone, therefore during the summer when we heard the positive update that football matches could resume, we immediately sprang into action to spread the news.

The announcement of football returning after covid-19, albeit behind closed doors, was a momentous occasion. The business operations at the club could resume with staff at the helm, players would be able to focus on the season ahead and fans could finally watch their team on the pitch, albeit virtually.

The ideal way to celebrate with our fans was to takeover Paisley with standout billboards.

Selecting Photographs

Due to social distancing measures, our photographs for billboards were limited. The transfer window period and a delay in the shipment of our 2020/21 football kit all contributed to drastically reducing our options for imagery.

Our graphic designer set to work. It was a challenge she was determined to overcome. Existing action shots would be examined to identify images that would fit into our messaging perfectly. The images would be cropped, cut out and photoshopped to life-size. The thrill of being a St Mirren Football Club supporter would be conveyed on screen.

Follow The Leader

Manager Jim Goodwin was positioned at great height. He had the task to lead us into the unknown and motivate the town to Be In That Number and march alongside the saints.

Stoic Jim made an appearance

Football Is Back

“Football Is Back!” appeared in bold letters alongside first team player Jon Obika.

There was a sense of sheer delight once the return of football was announced. Obika’s celebratory pose matched with the bold headline conveyed the buzz of the football community.

The photo had to be methodically cut out and optimised perfectly

Fanatic About Our Fans

As football returned without fans filling the stands, the club was humbled by the unwavering fan support shown despite the adversity. As season ticket sales surpassed the same level as previous years, the wider marketing team knew the fans had to be a focal point in the communications.

The club thought about shouting from the rooftops about how fantastic their fans were. It was a resounding decision that fans would star in our billboard placements.

Fans photos in all shapes and sizes were sent to the club and photoshopped into position

Location, Location, Location

Where will our billboard pop-up? The decision on which advert placement will give us the greatest visibility for our fans, especially as people are leaving the house less, is vital to the marketing strategy.

Fortunately, fans have expressed their delight in spotting our adverts.

Playing For Fans

Our fan billboards had a huge impact on the players. The players were blown away by the creative and commented it was refreshing to see as they had a newfound appreciation for the supportive faces in the crowd.

Sam Foley expressed his delight in seeing the fan photos sky high and spotting the club across Paisley:

“It really gave us all an appreciation of what this club means to the people of Paisley. We can’t wait for them to be allowed to return to football."

The player response inspired marketing and graphic design to arrange an upload to the pitch side screens to motivate the players. Again, our graphic designer set to work and spent time carefully editing the important fan moments many of you shared with us.

Eye-Catching

The creation of pay-per-view billboards were produced to drum up excitement for match days. The creative featured both St Mirren and the opposing team. It was produced internally for St Mirren to have full ownership of the illustration and strongly convey the club’s brand and traditional colour scheme. We put the task of promoting St Mirren while subtly featuring the opposition in our own hands.

The graphics were adapted for social media. Overall, the images were recognisable and complimentary of one another. The attention-grabbing advert would demand a second look as your eye would be drawn to the familiar sight. Driving by Linwood Road you would notice an upcoming St Mirren match was available to watch live. Later, whilst online, recognition will kick-in as you notice a similar advert again and are reminded to support your local team.

Socialising online only

Be In That Number

Now more than ever it is important to stand by your local football club and St Mirren want to do what we can to be at the forefront of the minds of local football fans as the club continues business operations under uncertain circumstances.

Together the club, marketing personnel and Kibble Communications are doing their best to share news and support the team in any way we can. Our aim is to share news about our players; keep the community updated about staff who are doing their part to ensure the running of the club goes as smoothly as possible through the transition into our new normal while seizing any opportunity to raise the fans' spirits. We have exciting future plans and hope to share them with you as we move forward.

Look out for St Mirren billboards across Abercorn Street, Renfrew Street and Linwood Road.
