Gordon Scott reflects on time at St Mirren after standing down from the board

Having decided to step down from the club Board last week, Gordon Scott reflected on his time at St Mirren, the journey to fan ownership and looks to what is ahead.

St Mirren to vote NO to conference league proposals

St Mirren Football Club has carefully considered proposals made for a newly created Conference League that would sit in the Fifth Tier of the Scottish Football pyramid.

All 42 SPFL clubs were invited to express an interest in enrolling a B Team into a newly created league, due to start in season 2024/25. However, we have decided that the club does not feel it can support these proposals and will not accept the invitation to be involved.

The club has spent a considerable amount of time assessing the advantages and practicalities of being involved in such a league as well as engaging with a number of stakeholders including a fans survey via SMiSA and its members. In the survey, 83% of respondents told SMiSA they would not be in favour of the Conference League proposal. As a fan-owned club, we feel it’s vital that we listen to the views of our supporters. Given the significant resource that would be required, including a mandatory financial contribution and staffing a B Team, we do not feel this current proposal works for us as a club.

While we would always look to support proposals that we feel aim to improve the development of young Scottish players, we are unconvinced at this time that a Fifth Tier Conference League system is the best way to achieve this.

The club would support calls for a review of the current loan system to allow for more strategic partnerships within SPFL clubs and give more of our younger players the opportunity to play across various levels within Scotland.

Meantime, we aim to re-establish a development side to bridge the gap between our U18s and first-team and continue to utilise the loan market to optimise the player pathway into our first team.

2022/23 Squad Update

Following the conclusion of the 2022/23 season, the club can provide supporters with an update on the squad.

We can confirm that Caolan Boyd-Munce has agreed a one-year deal that will keep him at the club until summer 2024 with an appearance-based option for another year. He is among a core of players under contract for the new season with a full list below.

Offers were made to Charles Dunne, Curtis Main and captain Joe Shaughnessy, but all three have decided that their futures lie elsewhere. With over 250 combined appearances between them, we thank them immensely for their respective contributions to St Mirren and wish them the very best in their new challenges.

Richard Tait also departs after almost three years at the club where he made 87 appearances and scored three goals. We sincerely thank Richard for his contributions and wish him the very best in whatever comes next.

Tony Watt and Thierry Small have returned to their parent clubs, Dundee United and Southampton, respectively. We thank them for their time at St Mirren and wish them all the best for their future.

An offer to Youth Academy graduate Jay Henderson remains on the table.

The club is working hard to add to the core of players already in the squad and will update supporters as this progresses.

Caolan Boyd-Munce agrees extension

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Caolan Boyd-Munce has agreed a one-year contract extension.

The 23-year-old midfielder joined Saints in March on a deal until the end of the season and the club has taken up the option to extend that until summer 2024 with an appearance-based option for another year.

The Northern Irishman – who began his career at Glentoran and had spells at Birmingham City and Middlesbrough – made three appearances for the Buddies last season with his first start coming in Saturday's match against Rangers at The SMiSA Stadium.

Speaking to stmirren.com, manager Stephen Robinson said: "Caolan was never going to come into the first team fold straight away because he hadn’t played for a long time.

What we could see three months ago, he is now starting to achieve. Sometimes, that gamble is worthwhile.

"He's different from what we have. He will find passes and put people through on goal as he gets fitter and stronger. We believe that come August/September, he has a real chance of starting games for us and pushing on. There's so much more to come from him.

"He's a conscientious boy," the manager continued.

"He will come back fitter and stronger and we've seen that from the period he's been in here.

"The option for a different type of midfielder who is similar to an Ethan Erhahon makes us stronger as a squad."

Stephen Robinson reflects on 2022/23

"Lots of things to learn from, lots of things to enjoy from the season and look forward to building on that relative success."

Stephen Robinson reflects on season 2022/23 and looks ahead to next season.

Chairman’s Announcement as Gordon Scott steps down

Having achieved his personal objectives of a successful transition to fan ownership, and a return to the top six, Director and former Chairman Gordon Scott has decided to step down from the club Board.

Gordon has made a massive contribution to the recent progress of the club and served for 14 of the past 20 years on the Board. He personally oversaw the building of the stadium at Greenhill Road, had a key role in the creation of the training centre at Ralston, and as Chairman, negotiated and facilitated the successful transition to fan ownership. Gordon leaves a lasting legacy of progress having dedicated countless hours in leading and managing the club through the various challenges we’ve faced during his time on the Board.

I am deeply indebted to Gordon for his support and advice over the past couple of years and he leaves with our grateful thanks. His experience and knowledge has been invaluable and he will always be welcome at the stadium on match days.

The SMiSA Board will now work with the remaining SMiSA nominated Directors to appoint a replacement.

There will be a full interview with Gordon on St Mirren TV in the coming days.
