Club Statement: Scottish FA Licensing

St Mirren Football Club is pleased to have been granted a Gold licence as part of the Scottish FA Club Licensing process. The Club achieved the Gold status with respects the ground, first team and legal/admin/finance for the awarding of the overall Gold rating.

Saints are one of only three clubs in the entire Scottish game to be awarded the prestigious gold licence and the challenge now is for the club to build on this standing and reach the Platinum level.

The club is also pleased to confirm that it has been granted a UEFA Licence Award. This follows a decision made by the Appellate Tribunal. The support of the Scottish FA licensing board, partner agencies and the hard work of our staff group have brought this to fruition.

Chief Executive, Tony Fitzpatrick said: "The progress within the club continues and this is reflected in these decisions. The Club has achieved the goal set by the Board of Directors in attaining both the Gold Licence and the UEFA Licence and will continue to build upon this across all areas of the Club."

Ethan Erhahon named in Scotland U21 squad

Ethan Erhahon has been named in the Scotland Under-21 squad for their double header against Northern Ireland next month.

It's Ethan's first call-up to U21 level having played for Scotland at U16, U17, U18 and U19 levels.

If capped, Ethan - who was named St Mirren Young Player of the Year for 2020/21 - would become the ninth St Mirren Youth Academy graduate to be capped at U21 level for Scotland in the last 10 years.

It's further international recognition for Saints who also saw Jamie McGrath called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for the first time.

Everyone at St Mirren is delighted for Ethan and wish him all the best in his time with the Scotland U21s.

Jamie McGrath receives Ireland call-up

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Jamie McGrath has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for their friendlies against Andorra and Hungary next month.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a standout season for Saints – winning the club’s official Player of the Year award after scoring 17 goals in 46 appearances as we finished in our highest top-flight position since 1989

The midfielder’s excellent form now sees him cap off a brilliant season with a much deserved first call-up to the Republic of Ireland national team.

Speaking on his call-up, Jamie said: "It’s a great honour and I think it is the top honour you can receive as a player is to get a call up for your country.

"It’s what you wish to play for when you’re a kid," he continued. "That’s the end goal - to put on that green jersey.

"Travelling up to Dublin as a kid I watched all the games with my dad and then once I grew up with my mates. It's strange that now I’ll be lucky enough to wear that jersey. As I said it is the ultimate honour as a player. I am absolutely over the moon."

Everyone at St Mirren is delighted for Jamie to receive his first call-up and wish him all the best in his time away with Ireland.

Joe Shaughnessy signs two-year deal

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Joe Shaughnessy has signed a new two-year contract which ties him to the club until summer 2023.

Joe joined the club in July 2020 on a one-year deal with a further year option and became a pivotal figure at the club – named as vice-captain in October before becoming skipper in January.

The Irishman went on to feature for Saints 43 times in his debut season as we finished in our highest top-flight position since 1989 and reached the semi-finals of both the League and Scottish Cups for the first time since 1981/82.

After agreeing his new contract, Joe told stmirren.com: "It’s something I wanted to get done in the last couple of months and I’m really happy it’s been done.

It’s been brilliant," he continued as he reflected on his time at Saints so far.

"I thought when I signed that we were building a good squad to have a good season and it turned out to be that. I really enjoyed it and that’s why I’m really pleased to get signed up for another two years.

"We nearly achieved everything that we set out for at the start of the season. We came really close to finishing top six and reached two semi-finals.

"Everyone at the club wants to kick on and make sure next season is as good, if not better, than last season."

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin is delighted to have Joe signed up for another two years.

Joe is our captain and he's been a great leader for us since he joined. He has been a good senior pro for us and really led by example in his time at the club.

"He's a great role model for some of our younger players and we're pleased that he has agreed to extend his time at the club."

Peter Urminsky signs contract extension

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Peter Urminsky has agreed a one-year contract extension.

The six-foot-five Slovakian stopper joined Saints in January 2020 on an 18-month deal after leaving Spartak Trnava in his homeland.

The 21-year-old has featured in a number of squads this season and is looking forward to developing further with an ambition to make his first team debut. Peter joined SPFL Championship side Ayr United on loan in February this season and gained valuable experience including playing 90 minutes in a match against Arbroath.

Peter will continue to work with our coaching staff including goalkeeping coach Jamie Langfield and Head of Goalkeeping Ross Paterson as he looks to build on the development he’s made since joining the club last year.

Manager Jim Goodwin said: "Peter is still a young lad and has developed well in his time at the club. We look forward to him continuing his progress and working with our first-team goalkeepers Jak Alnwick and Dean Lyness next season."

St Mirren Player of the Year Awards 2020/21

The St Mirren Player of the Year awards 2020/21 took place live on St Mirren TV following our final Scottish Premiership match of the season.

Awards were presented for St Mirren Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Social Media Player of the Year and Goal of the Season.

Jamie McGrath was named as the official St Mirren Player of the Year after an incredible season which saw the Irishman net 17 goals in 46 appearances this season.

St Mirren Youth Academy graduate Ethan Erhahon was named Young Player of the Year for the second time. The 20-year-old first won the award in 2018/19 and picked it up again after an impressive season in which he made 40 appearances for the first-team.

Ethan also picked up the Goal of the Season award for his goal against Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership back in October.

The final award was presented to Jak Alnwick after he was voted Player of the Year by supporters on social media. The Saints goalkeeper has featured 45 times for the Buddies since signing last summer. In those 45 appearances, Jak has kept 13 clean sheets and become a real fans favourite after a string of impressive performances.

Match Report: St Mirren 0-0 Dundee United

St Mirren secured their highest top-flight finish since 1989 after a goalless draw with Dundee United.

A point - combined with Motherwell losing to Ross County - ensured Jim Goodwin's men finished in seventh place un the Scottish Premiership.

Saints went into the match in eighth - knowing a win or a draw could be enough for seventh depending on how Motherwell fared at home to relegation battling Ross County.

After a quiet opening 20 minutes, the game was awoken when Lee Erwin flashed a shot just wide from the edge of the area before Marcus Fraser made a vital block to deny Lawrence Shankland up the other end of the park a minute later.

The Buddies felt they were denied a penalty on 27 minutes when Eamonn Brophy went down under the challenge of goalkeeper Ross Doohan. The forward broke through the United defence to go one-on-one with Doohan but was felled as he tried to round the goalkeeper. Referee Euan Anderson was unmoved to the frustration of Brophy and the Saints bench.

Saints fashioned a couple of chances before the end of the half with Jamie McGrath - named St Mirren Player of the Year - heading wide from a Jay Henderson cross and Brophy snapping an effort just by the post after some good footwork to manoeuvre himself into a shooting position.

It was Brophy who went closest again for St Mirren after the interval when his rasping strike was touched over by Doohan on 54 minutes.

Saints again came close on 68 minutes after a lovely passage of play. One touch passing involving substitutes Kristian Dennis, Jon Obika and Kyle McAllister saw the ball worked to Cammy MacPherson who curled wide from just inside the box.

With less than 20 minutes remaining, Dundee United were reduced to 10 men after a really poor challenge from Jamie Robson on McAllister. The United bench were livid at the decision as the defender was given a straight red but it was hard to argue that the referee had made the correct decision after Robson caught McAllister high with his studs showing.

United arguably had the better opportunities in the closing stages but couldn't take them as the game ended goalless. The St Mirren bench awaited news of the result at Fir Park before celebrating our highest league finish in 32 years.

Up Next: St Mirren v Dundee United (16th May)

The 2020/21 season draws to a close on Sunday as St Mirren host Dundee United at the SMiSA Stadium.

It's been a season of progress for Saints who narrowly missed out on a top finish and reached two national cup semi-finals for the first time since 1981/82.

Jim Goodwin's side are looking to end the season with their highest ever finish in the current league setup. For Saints to achieve that and finish seventh they would have to beat Dundee United and hope Motherwell fail to win at home to Ross County. The Buddies could also finish in seventh if they draw with United and Motherwell lose.

Dundee United could also finish seventh in their first season back in the Scottish Premiership. The Arabs currently sit a point behind Saints and would have to win on Sunday and hope Motherwell lose against Ross County.

Both sides come into the match on the back of draws on Wednesday night. Saints completed a comeback at Rugby Park to draw 3-3 with Kilmarnock, while Dundee United were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Motherwell.
