Saints defeat Dons in five goal thriller

St Mirren defeated Aberdeen in a five goal thriller to pick up their first league win of the season.

Connor Ronan fired Saints ahead, but Jim Goodwin's men found themselves behind at the break after Scott Brown and Christian Ramirez had scored for the Dons.

Teddy Jenks was shown red for Aberdeen early in the second-half and the Buddies made the man advantage count with Ronan grabbing his second before Curtis Main headed home the winner.

Jim Goodwin made one change from the side that drew with Hibernian last week as Saints looked for their first league win of the season. Dylan Reid dropped out of the squad with injury and was replaced by Ethan Erhahon.

The Buddies got off to the ideal start - taking the lead on 14 minutes. A poor kick-out from Joe Lewis was pounced upon by Alan Power. He knocked on to midfield partner Erhahon who played a stunning through ball for Ronan. The Irishman brought the ball in brilliantly before firing home via the aid of a deflection off Aberdeen defender David Bates.

Saints joy was short-lived with Aberdeen finding themselves level four minutes later in fortuitous fashion. A free-kick into the box bundled off Ramirez before knicking off Dons captain Brown's foot and into the back of the net.

Aberdeen started taking a grip of the game after their equaliser. Marcus Fraser made an excellent challenge to block Jenks' attempt two minutes after the Dons leveller. But the Dons would take the lead on 34 minutes when Ramirez headed home. The American forward peeled off his marker to bullet Calvin Ramsay's free-kick into the net. There were arguments from the Saints defence that Fraser had been impeded by Brown, but referee Willie Collum said no.

Saints started the second-half brightly as they looked to get themselves back into the match. Scott Tanser almost scored just two minutes after the restart when his free-kick from the right-hand side drifted all the way through with Lewis clawing off his line.

On 51 minutes, the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Jenks was given his marching orders. The Dons man had been booked in the first-half for a late challenge on Fraser and was shown a second yellow after a foul on Jamie McGrath. Jim Goodwin responded to that red card by going with two upfront, bringing on Main for Erhahon.

Within six minutes of the red card, Saints found themselves level. McGrath slid the ball through for Ronan who took a touch to steady himself before lashing into the back of the net to score his, and St Mirren's, second of the afternoon.

Just after the hour mark the Buddies turned the game on its head with substitute Main making it 3-2. Fraser's ball over the top looked like it drifted beyond Lewis, but the English striker was adamant he'd gotten a touch to force in.

Saints had more chances to add to their lead with Eamonn Brophy and Main having opportunities, but in the end three was enough for the Buddies to claim their first three points of the season.

St Mirren win Financial Performance Award at the Football Business Awards 2021

We are delighted to have been announced as the WINNERS of the Financial Performance Award at the Football Business Awards 2021, sponsored by Off the Pitch. We were up against some tough competition including Chelsea FC, Manchester United FC, Tottenham Hotspur and Kilmarnock FC up here in Scotland.

The Football Business Awards stated: "Congratulations to everyone who took home a trophy and were recognised for their excellence in the business of football. In these trickiest of times, it is our pleasure to salute the achievements, creativity and resilience of the teams behind the scenes.

"Football isn't all about the glitz and glamour. It's about hard work, preparation and dedication. It's about the organisation, planning and resourcefulness of the off-pitch teams, which allows extraordinary things to take place on the pitch. It's about connection and commitment to communities. In the modern world - good football and good business - are inextricably linked."

Up next: St Mirren v Aberdeen (26th Sep)

St Mirren get set to host Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon at the SMiSA Stadium as Jim Goodwin's men take on the Dons in cinch Premiership action.

Saints go into Sunday's match having drawn their third league match in a row last Saturday. Joe Shaughnessy's late header earned the Buddies a point at Easter Road in a 2-2 draw with Hibernian. That followed two goalless draws at home against Dundee United and St Johnstone.

Jim Goodwin's side currently sit in 9th place in the cinch Premiership on four points from their opening six matches.

Aberdeen come into Sunday's match following a narrow defeat at home to St Johnstone last weekend. The Dons were edged out 1-0 at Pittodrie in a loss that extended their winless run to seven matches.

Wins against Dundee United and Livingston on the first two weekends of the league season see Aberdeen sitting in seventh place in the cinch Premiership.

Previous

The Buddies took a point at Pittodrie in a 0-0 draw as neither side could be separated back in February in the only meeting between the two in 2021.

That was also the case in the last league meeting at the SMiSA Stadium with Jamie McGrath's penalty cancelling out Jonny Hayes' opener in a 1-1 draw in December.

Both sides did register a win over each other last season with Saints defeating the Dons 2-1 in the Premier Sports Cup. Jamie McGrath scored a late winner in a big win in Jim Goodwin side's run to the semi-final.

Ethan Erhahon scored St Mirren's Goal of the Season last year at Pittodrie in October, but Lewis Ferguson's injury time goal gave Aberdeen a 2-1 win.

Joe Shaughnessy believes Saints are heading in the right direction

Joe Shaughnessy says Saints are heading in the right direction as they search for a first league win of the season.

The skipper scored in the final few minutes to earn the Buddies a well-deserved point at Easter Road on Saturday in a 2-2 draw with Hibernian after Eamonn Brophy had given Jim Goodwin's men a first-half lead.

It was St Mirren's third draw in a row with the Buddies sitting in 10th place in the cinch Premiership on four points after six matches.

And while Saints still search for that first league win of the season, the captain believes all the signs are positive for the Buddies following recent performances.

The performance was there, and we scored a couple of goals and had a couple of really good chances as well which is something that we maybe struggled with in the last couple of weeks. It’s all there and heading in the right direction so there’s nothing to worry about.

"Performance wise it’s probably the best we’ve played this season - especially the first-half. I thought we dominated the ball and played some of our best stuff. Second-half - for maybe the first 15 minutes - Hibs came out flying and changed their shape and we didn’t really deal with it well. To find ourselves 2-1 down after playing the majority of the game really well was hard to take.

"The lads showed good character to stay in it and keep pushing right to the end. It was end-to-end stuff towards the end and either team could have won so it’s not a bad result."

Joe scores the equaliser at Easter Road (Image: Craig Brown)

Joe's 88th minute equaliser was his third goal of the season with all three coming after the 85th minute mark.

I think I’ve probably reached my quota for the season,” Joe laughed.

"It was a brilliant delivery and just closed my eyes and hoped it hit the net.

"All the deliveries from the set pieces and crosses coming in are brilliant so you know you’re probably going to get on the end of one.

"It was right place at the right time and it’s come right in on my head so it was perfect."

A noisy travelling support of around 500 followed the Saints through to the capital on Saturday and Joe was pleased the side was able to send them back to Paisley with something to celebrate.

It’s good to have the fans back in and the away fans are always brilliant. It’s good that they had something to cheer towards the end. I hope they enjoyed it."
