Stephen Robinson praises character in win over Livingston

The manager praised his side's character and energy after our win over Livingston in the cinch Premiership.

Late drama as Saints defeat Livingston and move into third

A dramatic final few minutes saw 10 man St Mirren snatch a victory over Livingston at the SMiSA Stadium and move into third place in the cinch Premiership.

Keanu Baccus scored his second Saints goal around 20 minutes from time to put the Buddies ahead before Jonah Ayunga was shown a straight red card seven minutes later and Livingston were awarded a penalty. Ex-Saint Sean Kelly missed from 12 yards, but Livingston would find equalise on 86 minutes through Bruce Anderson. It looked like the 10 men would have to accept a point only for substitute Alex Greive to score in the final minute of normal time to secure all three points for Stephen Robinson's men.

The manager was forced into a reshuffle from the side that defeated Celtic before the international break with Curtis Main ruled out and Ryan Strain only fit enough for a place on the bench. That meant Alex Gogic and Greg Kiltie started in place of the two, while Eamonn Brophy dropped out of the squad with an injury.

A scrappy first-half saw very little in the way of goalmouth opportunities. Gogic shot wide on eight minutes in his first start since returning to the club on a permanent basis after Livingston goalkeeper Shamal George has failed to clear from a corner, while Scott Pittman saw an effort for the visitors saved by the feet of Trevor Carson.

The second-half was much the same, but burst into life with a little over 20 minutes to go when Baccus headed St Mirren ahead. The Australian - fresh from his first Socceroos cap last Sunday - rose above Stephane Omeonga to meet a lovely cross from substitute Ryan Flynn and nod beyond George.

But that was just the start of what would prove to be a dramatic end to what had - until that point - been a scrappy affair.

Jonah Ayunga was given his marching orders on 75 minutes when referee Craig Napier ruled that the forward has blocked Anderson's effort with his hand. Ex-St Mirren Academy graduate Sean Kelly stepped up to take from 12 yards but fired over to the delight of the SMiSA Stadium.

It felt like maybe this was going to be St Mirren's day - only for Anderson to get his head on the end of a terrific cross from Joel Nouble and guide into the back of the net on 86 minutes.

Yet there was still time for more late drama. Saints felt they could have had a penalty in the final minute of normal time when Declan Gallagher's header looked to have come off a Livingston arm. Only a corner was awarded, but Scott Tanser's delivery was forced on by Joe Shaughnessy and Greive was there to turn the defender and force home to secure all three points for the 10 men.

St Mirren Community Engagement with Primary Schools

We are delighted to be welcoming pupils and staff from Our Lady of Peace Primary School to the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday for our cinch Premiership match against Livingston.

The Primary School in Linwood received a number of tickets as part of a new initiative in which schools throughout Renfrewshire will receive a batch of tickets for seven different home matches throughout the 2022/23 season.

The Street Stuff team delivered coaching sessions for the pupils over two days with first-team players Ethan Erhahon and Alex Gogic then visiting the school to present the tickets and take part in a Q&A session before spending further time signing autographs for all the pupils.

This is another part of our ongoing community engagement efforts and the club will be arranging more player visits to local schools as well as offering additional match day tickets for other matches throughout the season.

If your school would be interested in a visit by our first-team players then please get contact info@stmirren.com

Matchday Entertainment

Our matchday entertainment is back at the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday and there's lots of fun to be had!

Starting at 1pm in the West Stand car park, there will be plenty to keep everyone occupied with home and away fans welcome.

  • A massive inflatable assault course.
  • A disco bouncy castle.
  • Can you aim like Ayunga in our Football darts challenge?
  • Shoot some hoops in our inflatable basketball game
  • Be anything from a Panda to a Unicorn with our fantastic face painter.

It's not all about inflatables this time though as for the very first time we have the Street Stuff team joining us with a bus packed with Playstations to play FIFA 23, as well as a chance to test your shooting strength in the power shot simulator. And if all that isn't enough there will also be a small football pitch so you can showcase your skills. Are you the next Ethan Erhahon?

This really is the BIGGEST AND BEST the pre-match entertainment has ever been!

The fun will continue inside the stadium with the chance to win a box of delicious cakes courtesy of Glen Bun Bakery in our half-time game 'Bung a Baw'.

The best bit is that all activities are FREE of charge and funded by the club and SMISA so get down early to be part of all the fun!

Panda Club Update

Panda Club with the St Mirren Charitable Foundation continues without the Air Dome facility.

Panda Club runs for tomorrow's match against Livingston without any pre-match activity, however, for matches going forward they are looking to involve football and fun-based activities in the stadium before the match.

To register your child onto future Panda Club sessions you can email foundation@stmirren.com

Car Parking

A number of changes have been made to our parking protocol at the SMiSA Stadium ahead of the new season.

The three zones (Red, Black and White) are explained and shown on the diagram below.

Red Zone - South

For hospitality and home disabled supporters (subject to availability).

To enter/exit Greenhill Road. Hospitality ticket to be shown for entry.

Black Zone - Southwest

For Family Stand and Main Stand Patrons.

To enter/exit via Drums Avenue.

White Zone - West

For West Stand Patrons and Pay on the Day. Home disabled supporters in bays behind West Stand. Away disabled supporters in bays behind the dome.

To enter/exit via Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

    BY BUS

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Walk straight up Clark Street to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the the stadium on the opposite side of the road. Access to the North Stand will be from Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Up Next: St Mirren v Livingston (1st Oct)

St Mirren are back in cinch Premiership action this weekend as Stephen Robinson's side host Livingston at the SMiSA Stadium.

Saints return from the international break in high spirits having become the first side to defeat Celtic in league action in almost a year. Mark O'Hara and Jonah Ayunga scored in a 2-0 win over the Glasgow side to smash their 38 game unbeaten record in the league as well as make it four wins from five for the Buddies.

That win over Celtic moved Saints into fourth place with 12 points from our opening seven league matches.

Livingston have had a strong start to their campaign with David Martindale's outfit sitting in fifth place in the cinch Premiership with 12 points also - behind Saints on goal difference only.

The Lions come into Saturday's match on the back of two consecutive 1-0 home wins against Kilmarnock and Hearts.

Previous

There was very little between the two sides last season, though Saints were unbeaten in their four cinch Premiership matches against Livingston - winning one and drawing three.

Ethan Erhahon's first-half goal was enough to see us defeat the Lions 1-0 at The Tony Macaroni Arena last October, while the other three contests - two of which were at the SMiSA Stadium - ended in draws - 1-1, 1-1 and 0-0.

Livingston did come out on top when the sides met in the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup last season. Following a 1-1 draw after extra-time, the Lions would prevail 4-3 on penalties at Tony Macaroni Arena.

St Mirren's last home victory against Livingston was on the opening day of the 2020/21 season when Richard Tait scored on his debut to give us a 1-0 win.

Saints are unbeaten in their last six home matches against Livingston - winning two and drawing four.

Ethan Erhahon scored the winner when we defeated Livingston last October.

The officials

The referee on Saturday is Craig Napier and he'll be assisted by Sean Carr and Chris Rae. The fourth official is Dan McFarlane.

International Round-Up

As the international break comes to a close, we reflect on the number of Saints players representing their country throughout the world.

Scotland

St Mirren were represented across a number of age groups for Scotland – ranging from U18s to the full squad.

Declan Gallagher joined up with the Scotland squad last week for the first time in over a year and was on the bench during matches against Republic of Ireland and Ukraine. Steve Clarke's men secured promotion to the top tier of the Nations League - as well as a EURO 2024 play-off spot - after topping Group B1.

Jay Henderson was a late call up at U21 level and came on as a substitute in Scotland’s 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland at the SMiSA Stadium on Sunday.

Kieran Offord scored twice for Scotland U19s when they came from behind to defeat Malta 3-1 last week. Offord also featured as a substitute in the U19s' matches against Croatia (0-2) and USA (1-2).

Dylan Reid captained the Scotland U18s in their matches against Poland, France and Estonia during a mini friendly tournament in Limoges, France. Although there were defeats to Poland and France in the opening two matches, the U18s finished with an impressive 4-1 victory over Estonia.

Australia and New Zealand

Keanu Baccus and Ryan Strain received their first caps for Australia – squaring off against Saints teammate Alex Greive and his New Zealand side.

None of the three featured in the first match as the Socceroos defeated the All Whites 1-0 in Brisbane, but all three came on as substitutes in the return match in Auckland with Australia 2-0 winners.

It was a seventh New Zealand cap for Greive, while Baccus and Strain will be hoping to have put themselves in contention for a place in Australia's World Cup 2022 squad.

Cyprus

Alex Gogic featured for Cyprus in their 1-0 win over Greece in the UEFA Nations League. The utility man came on as a substitute in the 75th minute and helped his country to a historic win.

However, a 5-1 loss to Kosovo on Tuesday night means Cyprus will enter the relegation play-offs. Gogic came on in that match in the 59th minute with Cyprus already 4-0 down.

Declan Gallagher called up to Scotland squad

Declan Gallagher has been called up to the Scotland squad for their upcoming Nations League matches against Republic of Ireland and Ukraine.

If capped Declan will be the first St Mirren player to have been capped by the senior Scotland squad since Roy Aitken in 1991.

Everyone at St Mirren is delighted for Declan and we wish him all the best in his time away with the National squad.

We are also delighted for Jay Henderson after he was called up to the Scotland U21 squad.

Our Help A Buddie initiative is up and running with ACCORD Hospice, Ukrainian families, The Disability Resource Centre and Barnardo's Paisley Threads some of the recipients of our community tickets so far this season.

The latest beneficiaries of the Help a Buddie initiative were elderly residents from Renfrewshire Housing's Darkwood Courts as we welcomed them to the SMiSA Stadium on Sunday for our 2-0 win against Celtic.

Sally Logan from Renfrewshire Council said: "Our tenants had a blast and the score made it even better!

"The seats were right at the goals, where we saw all the action and even got a photo shoot with the Paisley Panda. Overall, a perfect day."

Launched in June, Help a Buddie is our brand-new initiative where St Mirren supporters have the chance to purchase and donate a match ticket for those less fortunate.

Help a Buddie will run for the entirety of the 2022/23 season and will continue to help benefit local community groups/organisations and those less fortunate supporters.

If you want to Help a Buddie please click HERE to donate a match ticket or click HERE to nominate a worthwhile individual/group/organisation for consideration.
