Conor McCarthy set for surgery

Conor McCarthy will undergo surgery after sustaining a ligament injury in Saturday's match against Livingston.

The Saints defender had to be replaced after 36 minutes in the draw with Livingston after rupturing a ligament just above his ankle.

Jim Goodwin confirmed the 23-year-old will have an operation next week and be out for a number of weeks.

Unfortunately the results of the scan weren't great and we will need to pencil him in for an operation next week," the manager said speaking to the press.

"He has done two or three different things to the ankle. It's not something we think is going to keep him out for three or four months. I would imagine it will be the six-to-eight-week bracket.

"He is a young lad, he has never had any serious injuries. He is physically strong and I would expect him to heal quickly.

"The thought of going into surgery now is not as big a deal as it used to be. We are hoping for as good a turnaround as possible."

Charles Dunne returned to the side in place of McCarthy last weekend and the 28-year-old is now set for his first start since a 0-0 draw with St Johnstone in August when St Mirren face Hearts at Tynecastle tomorrow.

And with Dunne, the manager knows he has a more than able stand-in available.

Charles Dunne came on last week and was excellent. We have a very, very good replacement.

"Physically I think Charles is one of the outstanding centre-backs in the league, in terms of his all-round profile - 6ft 3in, rapid, technically very, very good.

"He started the season very well, picked up a knock and has found himself on the sidelines for a number of weeks because the three lads who have been playing have been very consistent. So Charles has had to be patient.

"He came on Saturday and was excellent. We are very lucky to have him. It's not like I am turning to an 18 or 19-year-old replacement.

"I am putting in a centre-half who has a wealth of experience and has all the ability in the world. Hopefully we can keep the big man fit because he deserves that."

Charles Dunne is likely to come in for the injured Conor McCarthy.

Previous

The two sides have already faced off this season with Hearts edging a 2-1 victory at the SMiSA Stadium in August.

Saturday is the first time St Mirren have been at Tynecastle since November 2019. Jon Obika and Danny Mullen scored for the Buddies that afternoon, but the home side ran out 5-2 winners.

Saints last win at Tynecastle was in 2013 when goals from John McGinn and Paul McGowan gave us a 2-0 win in Gorgie.

John McGinn celebrates after giving St Mirren the lead the last time we won at Tynecastle.

The officials

Alan Muir takes charge of the game on Saturday and he's assisted by Ralph Gordon and Jonathan Bell. John Beaton is the fourth official.

Ryan Flynn reaches 100 games for Saints

Ryan Flynn made his 100th St Mirren appearance in Saturday's cinch Premiership match against Livingston.

It's a journey that began almost four years ago in the second-tier with Ryan arriving at Saints in January 2018 to help in our push for promotion to the top flight.

And in his near four years with the club, the 33-year-old has been a firm fans favourite at the SMiSA Stadium - earning the nickname Flynniesta for his composed performances in midfield.

Ryan joined the club in January 2018 to help our push for promotion to the top flight

After helping play his part in our title winning campaign, Ryan played an integral role in our survival the following season - scoring an important late winner against Livingston in March 2019. The Buddies would go on to beat Dundee United on penalties in the play-off final two months later to ensure their status in the cinch Premiership.

Despite an ACL injury which ruled Ryan out for nine months during 2020 he battled back to full fitness and has continued to be an important member of the St Mirren squad, culminating in his milestone appearance on Saturday.

Speaking to stmirren.com after the match, Ryan said: "I've enjoyed every minute and loved my time here at the club and hopefully there's a lot more to come.

Since I've been at this club I've felt at home and as I said I've loved every minute of it.

"It's nice to be back in with the boys and I'm just enjoying my football. You've always got to be ready in case you get that chance and I'm glad I'm taking that chance now. I'm enjoying it and happy to be playing games.

"Saturday was more frustrating than the other games I've played in recently. We should see that out. We're playing well at the moment but we just need to get those wins."

Saints boss Jim Goodwin was full of praise for Ryan after the match, saying: "I'm delighted for Flynny.

He's been a great servant to the club and terrific player for me since I came in a little over two-and-a-half-years ago.

"He's just a top pro," the manager continued.

"He's a great lad in the dressing room and a real model professional to the young lads in there.

"He never lets me down to be honest. I could throw him in at right-back, right wing-back, the sitting midfield position that he's played the last couple of games, and you know you're going to get a performance from him every single time.

"He deserved a win [on Saturday] and we're disappointed we couldn't get it for him."

Manager praise for Ryan Flynn after milestone appearance

I'm delighted for Flynny. He's been a terrific player for me since I came in and he's just a top pro."

Jim Goodwin praises Ryan Flynn after the midfielder made his 100th St Mirren appearance in this afternoon's draw.

Late leveller denies Saints all three points

A late Livingston equaliser denied St Mirren all three points at the SMiSA Stadium.

An incredible Jamie McGrath strike had given Saints a second-half lead before Nicky Devlin levelled in the dying minutes to grab Livi a share of the spoils.

The visitors started the brighter and Cristian Montano really should have had the Lions in front on 10 minutes. The forward was there to meet a Devlin cross from the right but bulleted the header wide from close range.

After a slow start Saints began to take better control of the match and could have been ahead after 17 minutes. Marcus Fraser got his head on to a Scott Tanser corner which lead to a stramash with Jim Goodwin's men unable to force home. Five minutes later the Saints had another good opportunity when Richard Tait's cut-back found Alan Power in the box, but the Irishman scooped over.

The Buddies were dealt a blow on 34 minutes when Conor McCarthy was forced to hobble off after making a challenge on the touchline. He was replaced by Charles Dunne who made his first appearance since August.

Chances were at a premium in the first-half but Jak Alnwick had to be alert a few minutes before the interval. Odin Bailey latched on to Bruce Anderson's takedown and the winger drove forward and saw a powerful effort from 20 yards pushed away by the Saints goalkeeper.

As they did in the first-half, Livingston started the second 45 the stronger of the two with Montano having another opportunity when he forced an important save from Alnwick on 57 minutes.

Saints were struggling to create chances and Jim Goodwin responded by making a change just after the hour mark when he replaced Connor Ronan with Kristian Dennis.

McGrath - back from international duty with the Republic of Ireland - wasn't far away a few minutes after the change with an audacious attempt. The midfielder brought the ball down on his chest and volleyed just wide. Six minutes later it would be the Irishman who gave us the lead in stunning fashion. The 25-year-old spotted Max Stryjek off his line and lifted it over the goalkeeper from 25 yards to put us ahead.

It looked like that one goal would be enough to secure three points for the Buddies but the visitors scored a leveller in the final two minutes of normal time. Livingston captain Nicky Devlin drilled home from the edge of the area to deny St Mirren the win.

There was still time for drama in the dying embers of the game when the Saints players screamed for what looked to be a stonewall penalty in the final seconds when the ball struck the arm of Harris Panayiotou but the referee blew for full-time.
