Street Stuff 2022 summer programme success

Street Stuff 2022 summer programme success

Earlier this month, the Scottish Government published 'Summer Holiday Childcare and Food: Celebrating Good Practice Case studies from Summer 2022' featuring Renfrewshire Council's 2022 summer programme in partnership with Street Stuff.

School holiday clubs are nothing new in the Renfrewshire Council area. However, this year the council wanted to use funding received from the Scottish Government to extend the reach of existing programmes and target more youngsters from priority family groups.

The 2022 Summer Programme was led by Renfrewshire Council's Community Learning and Development Service in collaboration with Youth Services, Adult and Family Learning and the Street Stuff Partnership. Street Stuff is a partnership between Renfrewshire Council, St Mirren Football Club, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue and Engage Renfrewshire.

To ensure that the planning of the summer programme ran smoothly, Street Stuff and the council teams began discussing ideas at the start of the year and worked closely throughout until delivery. Starting the planning process this far in advance, enabled staff to learn about the partnership as well as forging and building relationships.

A considerable challenge for the scheme involved a lack of staffing in council venues. Street Stuff were ambitious in their approach, planning to run holiday programmes at six different locations across the council area. They were forced to rethink their strategy. To ensure that none of the targeted communities lost out, the decision was taken to stagger services and run part-time instead.

Providing a hot meal for participants was a key part of the holiday programme. However, the difficulty was finding suitable amenities for making meals. The best solution was to use school kitchens but managing to gain access to kitchens outwith contracted hours presented a problem. The resolution involved the Council working closely with Amey, which delivers facilities services for schools in the region. The Council negotiated with Amey to gain access to kitchens outwith hours. These negotiations were successful and the Council were able to provide hot meals and packed lunches for day trips.

Despite these difficulties faced by the programme, the partners overcame obstacles by building on their collaboration with existing partners and successfully developing and cementing new partnerships leading to another fantastic summer holiday programme.
