Dunfermline - Post-Match Thoughts

Allan McManus took charge of the side today and while disappointed with the 4-3 loss against Dunfermline, he was pleased with the players’ efforts over the ninety minutes. He said:

“I’m absolutely devastated for the players. I think they’ve put everything and more into the game. They’ve done everything that I’ve asked them and I think they played some fantastic stuff today. They had numerous opportunities in the game and just where we are in the league just now we seem to be getting punished for every single little mistake.

“But there is no point in feeling down about it, we’ve got to rally and I’ve said to the boys if they play like that and they work as hard as that then it is going to turn for them very quickly.”

Some of the goals lost by Saints today were a mixture of mistakes and bad fortune but Allan reckons Saints can turn things around quickly. He said:

“You can’t legislate for it. When you are at the top end of the table you get the breaks and on another day they go bye the post, but what can you do? As I say, no point in feeling sorry for ourselves, the boys have got to believe by working as hard as they did today and with the style of football that they played today then they’ve got to believe that we will all get out of this position very quickly.

“The confidence comes from within. It is all down to hard work and obviously we have just tried to vary the style of play a wee bit today and I think it worked for us in a lot of occasions but sometimes when individual or small mistakes happen we are getting punished at the moment. But we’ll get back into the training ground on Monday and we keep working as hard as we possibly can to rectify it next week again.”

John Sutton was on scoring form today with two goals in the first half. Allan said:

“I’m delighted for him. I thought he worked his backside off, as did everybody to be fair. On another day he could have had a couple more. The amount of balls we got in to the box, on another day we might have got on the end of them as well.

“The players have given us everything and more that I asked for today, we’ve created numerous chances and ultimately a freak goal and a mistake has been the difference in the game. On another day we could have won the game.”

Lewis Morgan was a bit under the weather in the lead up to today’s game but the youngster put in another good outing. Allan said:

“Morgy has had a great season so far, he has been doing really well. A lot of consistency for a younger player so it is important that he keeps doing that. He’s not been feeling too great the last few days so that was how we had to bring him off a bit earlier as he was running on empty. But to be fair I thought when Walshy went on he had a good impact on the game as well.”

Match Report: Dunfermline 4 St Mirren 3

St Mirren were left disappointed after being on the losing end of a seven goal thriller in the afternoon’s late kick off. It was a frustrating afternoon which saw the Saints take the lead twice in the first half through John Sutton before thinking they’d grabbed a point late on after a stunning goal from loanee Ryan Hardie. It wasn’t to be after Dunfermline scored a late winner to leave the Saints two points adrift at the bottom of the Ladbrokes Championship.

Caretaker manager Allan McManus made one change to the side that drew 1-1 with Dumbarton last week as the returning Rocco Quinn came in for Tom Walsh.

Saints began the early stages of the game in fairly bright fashion with Lewis Morgan flashing a shot from outside the box over the bar but Dunfermline took control with Joe Cardle having the first big opening of the match but failed to control the ball through from John Herron.

Cardle was a live-wire and was the recipient of a great cross from Nicky Clark that found the attacker unmarked in the Buddies box but he failed to get enough purchase on the header. Along with Cardle, Michael Paton was also having a good game and had a great chance from a free kick with 15 minutes on the clock. Clark was fouled by Gary Irvine just outside the box but Paton put the ball well over the bar when he should have at least tested Scott Gallacher.

After another good moment from Cardle, St Mirren started to grow into the game again and Stephen Mallan went close from long range, winning a corner for Saints. Just over a minute later St Mirren took the lead through John Sutton. It was the striker’s third goal of the season as he slid in to knock Lewis Morgan’s cutback beyond Sean Murdoch in the Dunfermline goal. It was the first time this season that the Buddies had taken the lead in a game in the league but it was to be short-lived when the hosts levelled the game 10 minutes later.

Nicky Clark headed home from a Jason Talbot cross to give the Pars what seemed to be a much needed boost before half time. But the home fans delight at being back on level terms wouldn’t last long as Sutton fired Saints back into the lead just before half time. A long ball from the right was scooped out of the air by Sutton who turned the defender and lashed a shot from the edge of the box low into the right hand corner of the net. It was a fantastic finish from the experienced striker to put Saints ahead for the second time of the match and give the side confidence going into the break.

Half-Time: Dunfermline Athletic 1-2 St Mirren

That confidence was evident in the early period of the second half with the Buddies going close to adding a third through Jason Naismith and John Sutton. However, those chances came after two scares from Joe Cardle and Gavin Reilly who both had good opportunities to get Dunfermline level. The chances for Cardle and Reilly were both similar as they creeped into the Saints box on the right hand side but both saw their chances go just wide.

Naismith went agonisingly near to getting his first goal of the season when he broke into the Pars box and saw his shot across goal go mightily close to nestling into the back of the net. This buoyed the away support and the team and it was Sutton who almost nabbed himself a hat-trick a minute later when he headed just beyond the post. The Englishman rose above everyone in the box to get on the end of Mallan’s free kick but was left disappointed not to have given Saints a cushion.

Dunfermline equalised for the second time in the match just after the hour mark in bizarre fashion. Nicky Clark saw his effort saved well by Gallacher and then the rebounded attempt hit the post before coming off Andy Webster and ending up in the back of the St Mirren net. It was a disappointing blow after a good start from the Saints, however Dunfermline had grown back into the game in the couple of minutes before the goal.

Allan McManus made a change with just over 20 minutes to go when he brought Tom Walsh on for Lewis Morgan. The introduction looked promising when, having only been on the pitch for a few moments, Walsh put in a tantalising ball across the box which evaded Murdoch but there was nobody in the red of St Mirren to attack the ball.

There was a belief from the Saints that they could go on to win the game and Mallan saw an effort from outside the area go narrowly beyond the post, much to the relief of Murdoch. However, only 2 minutes later some slack St Mirren defending allowed Clark to grab his second of the match. The striker peeled away from the visiting defence to sweep home a Paton cross.

There was fight in this Buddies team though and less than five minutes after Clark had put Dunfermline in the lead for the first time in the match, St Mirren fought back to make it 3-3. Ryan Hardie picked up the ball on the right hand side and cut in before firing off a speculative effort that rocketed into the back of the Dunfermline net.

The game was far from over though and Saints were to be the masters of their own downfall when Kyle Hutton attempted to play the ball back to goalkeeper Gallacher. Dunfermline substitute Farid El Alagui nicked in to put the ball beyond the keeper and give Dunfermline a precious three points.

Welcome to the new club website

Welcome to the new look official club website here at STMIRREN.COM.

The club has been working hard to bring supporters and our visitors an improved experience when visitng the official website and we hope you like what you see in this fresh new design.

All the same information is here as before, and we hope we've made it easier to find and easier to view especially on your mobile and tablet devices.

In addition you will find a couple of new features such as our Social Media Hub which brings all the latest Twitter posts from a variety of St.Mirren related accounts into one easy to read page right here on the website.

We also have a new "Suggestion Wall" where supporters can propose ideas to the club on how they feel certain aspects may be improved. We want to improve the communication between supporters and the employees at the club and the website will play an important role in that going forward.

This re-design however is only the first phase in a series of updates. We will now begin looking at each area of the site in turn and looking to make improvements. In subsequent phases we will be looking to introduce online booking and payments for services such as corporate hospitality, event bookings and subscriptions. We want to make things as simple and easy as possible for our supporters and we will be working hard to do that as quickly as possible.

We'd like to thank Alesia Milton of UWS for her time and efforts in canvasing the fans opinions on the previous website and for producing the paper that kicked off the re-design project last season.

Similarly we'd like to record our thanks to Kenny & Karin Pointon who managed our official web hosting for many years with great care and dedication.

Finally our thanks to local website designers Big Front Door who have created and hosted this fantastic new website for us, to KP Kreative who have helped us with some new match graphics, to photographer Allan Picken for providing the brilliant imagery and of course to our intrepid Webmaster Norrie Jamieson who has been kept very busy updating two websites for the last few weeks as we prepared for launch!

Have a good look around and let us know what you think. This is after all YOUR website so post us a message on the Suggestion Wall and let us know your thoughts.

Update from the Chairman

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to our new look website and give a huge thank you to all those who helped with the redesign of the site and in particular "Big Front Door" who were responsible for turning all the good ideas into reality.

For me this also represents a perfect opportunity to mark the beginning of a new era both on and off the park.

Our partnership with Smisa is in its earlier stages but I am very comfortable that we are heading in the right direction and that, together, we can create a successful fan ownership model over the next 10 years.

I am also very happy how quickly we have gelled as a board and while everybody is still finding their feet I know we will all have a very positive input in taking the club forward.

We have had the keys now for 2 months and feel that, although we are moving in the right direction behind the scenes, we were not progressing on the park or in terms of our communication with our support.

As a result of that and as part of our long term plan we decided to implement some major changes.

The decision to terminate the managers contract was not an easy one. Alex did a tremendous job last year but for some reason it was just not happening this year. People outwith the club and support will consider that we didn't give him enough time and I can understand that. Our job, however, is to do what's best for St Mirren Football Club.

However, at the risk of contradicting myself, I don't think it is any coincidence that the most successful managers are given time to get things right. That does not just require patience and support from the board but also from the stands. Our long term goal is to have a man at the helm who will have an input into all playing aspects of the club with the aim of producing a successful supply chain from the youth system to the first team. It is vital that our new manager buys into that philosophy as well as producing a product on the pitch that we can all enjoy watching.

We have also made the decision to employ a dedicated media manager. We feel that this is now a full time job and is a vital part of improving our communication levels and selling the services of the club going forward with the new website being key to achieving this.

I have stated from the beginning that we need to increase the turnover of the club so that we are competing with the top 6 clubs of the top flight and not flirting between the Premiership and the Championship.

This will not be easy by any manner of means and we are already £125k down on our income levels for next season due to the loss of the SPFL parachute payments. We also have a very financially beneficial agreement with JD sports that we need to make some tough decisions on.

In my previous role within the stadium construction project I promised that I would try and improve the disabled viewing facilities once we had the SPL compliant stadium that was our agreement with tesco. Unfortunately I left the club before I was able to make good on that promise so it has become a key part of my re-incarnation to fulfil that commitment with the new disabled platform in the main stand.

We are also investigating the viability of numerous projects that include the "Love Street Coffee Shop", an advertising board at the Paisley end corner that will be utilised to promote club services and home games as well as being a source of income, a memorial garden, office provision in one of the corners, and making the 1877 bar a standalone facility so it can be better utilised without the entire main stand being open. These things won't happen overnight and most need significant funding but rest assured we are working hard to take the club forward.

My aim is to provide regular updates for the supporters going forward. Please do also record any ideas or suggestions you have on our new "Suggestion Wall" here on the site. Your opinion really does matter.

Without the continued support of you, our loyal fans, and club sponsors none of this will be possible so we ask that you continue to support us in every way you can. We are in this together for the long haul!
