Remembering Those That Have Passed

With the Ladbrokes Premiership split fixtures announced last week we now know that our final home league match of the season will take place on Monday 13th May as we play host to Hamilton Academical.

As we do every year we will be hosting a minute's applause prior to kick-off to remember all the St Mirren supporters that have sadly passed away throughout season 2018/19.

If you would like the name of someone who has passed away this season to be included on the big screen during the applause or on the website then please email scoreboard@stmirren.com by Sunday 12th May.

Our thoughts to all the families who have lost loved ones throughout the season.

Supporters provided an incredible 1,026.19kg of food at a foodbank collection

Supporters provided an incredible 1,026.19kg of food at a foodbank collection before our recent home match against Dundee in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

The donations will provide 2,443 meals for people in need in Renfrewshire.

In the generous bid to help feed those less fortunate in the Renfrewshire area, both sets of fans donated the food - along with St Mirren players and staff, after the Renfrewshire foodbank put together a list of items that is was particularly short on.

In response to the overwhelming effort from the fans, the Renfrewshire Foodbank wrote a letter to St Mirren supporters thanking them for the collection as the number of people needing help from the local foodbank continues to increase.

Elizabeth Alexander, Project Manager of the Renfrewshire Foodbank said: "2018/19 has been another very busy year.

"So far we have provided food for 9,358 people - 2,567 of which are children.

"We could not do this without the help of the community. This coming year will be challenging as more and more people in our community are left without money for food while they wait six weeks to receive their first payment of the welfare benefit, Universal credit."

"Our wonderful volunteers continue to work very hard to ensure donations are collected and sorted, parcels are made up and that people receive the food they need for themselves and their families and, crucially, support to get back on their feet.

"Thank you once again for everything you are doing to help those in our community struggling with hunger."

Street Stuff: 10 Years in Your Community

Renfrewshire's award-winning diversionary programme, Street Stuff, is celebrating ten years of making a difference to the lives of young people in the community.

Since its inception in 2009, the programme has seen more than 200,000 young people come through its doors, each having the opportunity to take part in sport, make new friends and engage in social activities.

Providing activities such as football, dance and gaming six days a week, the Street Stuff team aim to offer young people, often in disadvantaged areas, with the opportunity to access exercise and social activities which they may otherwise not have the chance to take part in.

The programme hosts four holiday camps throughout the year to ensure that young people have an outlet during the school holidays and a healthy meal is provided to each young person who attends - with more than 26,000 healthy meals provided in the last four years.

The project runs in partnership between Renfrewshire Council, St Mirren Football Club, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Engage Renfrewshire.

St Mirren chairman Gordon Scott said: "At St Mirren, we are responsible for the day to day management and running of the programme and we support the coaches and volunteers through ongoing education programmes and training.

Street Stuff is a great conduit to enable the club to foster stronger links with the community, and the kids within it, and by providing the activities we do, we see massive health and social benefits for our young people.

"As the programme hits the 10-year milestone, I think the number of both local and national awards it has received speaks for itself in terms of both its success and the efforts of those who take part and run it."

Stephen Gallacher, Street Stuff Manager, said: "It is important as it offers young people a safe place to go. Their parents are happy as they know that the staff have the best interest of the young people as a priority."

The opportunity to be involved in sport and other activities helps create friendships and teamwork, but more importantly it gives the young people a chance to blow off some steam from a stressful day either at school or in the home."

"I love to see the young people have the opportunity to develop and flourish instead of being put down. The way in which the community safety team are prepared to offer a way out into meaningful destinations instead of being negative towards young people is so beneficial for our young people.

"And the fact that the young people over the years have been so welcoming to us in their communities is what makes going to work on a daily basis more enjoyable."

Match Report: Hamilton 1-1 St Mirren

St Mirren picked up a point and extended the gap over bottom side Dundee to three points after a 1-1 draw with Hamilton Academical at the Hope CBD Stadium.

The Buddies arguably had the better of the match but fell behind on 63 minutes when Steven Davies opened the scoring for the visitors. Saints fought back though and were level just three minutes later when Anders Dreyer scored his first St Mirren goal from the penalty spot. Both sides had chances to win the game but in the end had to settle for a share of the spoils.

St Mirren shot towards the 1,700 strong Saints contingent in the first half and should have been ahead with just five minutes on the clock. Good pressure from Paul McGinn on Scott McMann allowed Brad Lyons to pick up on a loose ball. The midfielder had the goal gaping but took one touch too many allowing McMann to recover and get the tackle in before Lyons shot over at the second attempt.

Saints were adamant they should have had a penalty on 23 minutes when Anders Dreyer was wiped out in the box by Ziggy Gordon. The Danish forward had skipped into the box and sent a low ball across before being taken out. The Buddies were furious but referee John Beaton decided the challenge was fair.

Hamilton could have found themselves ahead five minutes later only for Vaclav Hladky to come to Saints' rescue. A loose clearance from Jack Baird was picked up on by Darian MacKinnon. The midfielder slotted a lovely through ball into Steve Davies who spun away from Baird, but Hladky made himself big to turn the effort wide.

St Mirren spurned a glorious opportunity to take the lead with five minutes of the half remaining. Simeon Jackson did well to get in ahead of Ziggy Gordon to win the ball and laid it off to Lyons who charged through on goal. The midfielder had Danny Mullen in space inside the box, but looked in two minds as he elected to go it alone and stabbed the ball wide.

Hladky was alert at the start of the second half as he turned an Aaron McGowan shot from the angle off the post just two minutes after the interval.

Indeed, Accies were brighter in the second half than they had been in the first and Hladky again made a good stop to deny Mickel Miller's effort with Ethan Erhahon on the line to turn away George Oakley's follow up effort.

Hamilton took the lead on 63 minutes. The Saints defence failed to clear their lines allowing Tony Andreu to whip a ball into the box where it met Davies. The forward got in front of his defender flicked home via the post with his left foot.

It was frustration for Saints who would have felt they should already have been ahead in the match. But the reaction was good from Oran Kearney's charges as they found themselves level just three minutes later. Anders Dreyer was felled inside the box by Ziggy Gordon and this time referee John Beaton pointed to the penalty spot. The Dane stepped up to take and sent Accies goalkeeper Gary Woods the wrong way to restore parity.

Both sides had a go to try and find a winner but the only clear cut chance for either came in the dying embers when Hladky made a wonderful stop to push away Oakley's volley with Baird on the line to clear away Andreu's header after the Frenchman had Hladky beaten.
