St Mirren sign Hyeokkyu Kwon on loan until the end of the season

St Mirren Football Club is happy to announce the loan signing of Hyeokkyu Kwon until the end of the season subject to clearance.

The Korean midfielder joins Saints on the temporary transfer for the remainder of the campaign from cinch Premiership league leaders Celtic.

22-year-old Hyeokkyu joined Celtic in July after agreeing a five-year-deal to move from Busan I-Park in his home country.

With Keanu Baccus away with Australia as part of their Asian Cup squad, manager Stephen Robinson admitted it was an area that he was keen to add to.

Stephen Robinson said: "He’s a player that comes highly recommended. Celtic were very keen for him to come to us which is a complement to the coaching staff here.

"He’s played a lot of games in South Korea and was signed by Celtic for big money. It was an area we needed to strengthen in midfield and with Keanu away at the Asian Cup it was important that we strengthened there.

"We believe that he [Hyeokkyu] will come in and add that strength. He breaks up play really well and he can start play really well for us as well. I’ve had some good conversations with Brendan Rodgers about him and we’re delighted to have him in."

Alex Greive joins Dundee United on loan

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Alex Greive has joined Dundee United on loan until the end of the season subject to SFA approval.

Alex joins the cinch Championship side for the remainder of the 2023/24 season and links up with ex-Saints boss Jim Goodwin who, ironically, gave the forward his St Mirren debut against Dundee United at Tannadice almost two years ago.

The 24-year-old New Zealand international has made 22 appearances for Saints this season, though only three of those have been starts.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "This opportunity arose for Alex to go and get more game time which was something we felt we couldn’t guarantee him at this moment in time.

"It’s a good chance for him to go and get more playing time and frees up some money for us to potentially add to the squad during the window.

"We wish Alex the best of luck during his time at Dundee United."

Kieran Offord joins Stirling Albion on loan until end of the season

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Kieran Offord has joined Stirling Albion on loan until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old links up with the cinch League One side for more valuable game time as he continues his footballing development.

The forward recently returned from a loan spell at cinch League One side Edinburgh City where he made 19 appearances for the Citizens with two goals and two assists.

Kieran has made 14 appearances for St Mirren and remains contracted to the club until summer 2025. We wish him the best of luck during his spelling at Stirling Albion.

Kieran Offord returns from loan spell

St Mirren Football Club has exercised our option to recall Kieran Offord from his loan at Edinburgh City.

The 19-year-old signed a new contract with Saints in August 2023 which keeps him at the club until summer 2025 and immediately joined The Citizens on loan to further his football development.

Kieran - who has made 14 appearances for St Mirren - played 19 times during his spell at the cinch League One side this season.

Thierry Small recalled by Southampton

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Southampton have exercised their option to recall Thierry Small from his loan.

The 19-year-old made 21 appearances for Saints across two loan spells, with six of those appearances coming this season.

We thank Thierry for all his efforts during his time at the club and wish him every success in his future career.

10-man Saints lose at The SMiSA Stadium

10-man St Mirren were beaten 3-0 by Celtic in our first match of 2024.

Two goals in the opening six minutes from Daizen Maeda and Matt O'Riley had Celtic 2-0 up and Saints' afternoon was made a lot tougher when a VAR intervention saw Toyosi Olusanya sent off for a foul on Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart. Greg Taylor then added a third for the visitors as they left Paisley with the points.

There were three changes to the Saints side that defeated Aberdeen 3-0 on Saturday. Keanu Baccus dropped out after joining up with Australia for their Asian Cup campaign, while Mark O'Hara missed the game after picking up a thigh injury on Saturday. Lewis Jamieson was also benched with the trio replaced by Ryan Flynn, Caolan Boyd-Munce and Olusanya.

Saints got off to the worst possible start when Maeda put the hosts ahead within the first minute. O'Riley's low pass found Maeda who has got in front of Scott Tanser and managed to slot beyond Zach Hemming. That poor start was compounded five minutes later when O'Riley turned from provider to goalscorer to double Celtic's lead. Bernardo picked up the ball from Luis Palma and spun well to get away from Alex Gogic and tee up O'Riley who took a touch before finishing low through the legs of the goalkeeper.

It was an uphill task but Saints looked to find a way back into the match with Olusanya looking lively. He managed to get in behind Celtic's centre-half pairing of Liam Scales and Maik Nawrocki on 13 minutes but he lashed his effort well wide under pressure from the latter defender.

Nawrocki missed a big opportunity to extend Celtic's lead shortly before the half hour mark when he didn't get the right connection on a header after being found unmarked in the Saints box. Kyogo Furuhashi flicked on Palma's free-kick for the Hoops defender but he only got the slightest of touches as he glanced wide of the far post.

Saints were dealt a huge blow when Olusanya was shown a red card following a VAR check as the game was reaching its interval. The Buddies forward made an honest attempt to reach a cross but caught Celtic number one Hart late and was booked by referee David Munro. But the VAR, Steven McLean, advised the referee to check the monitor and he subsequently withdrew the yellow card and showed Olusanya a straight red to reduce Saints to 10 men.

The Buddies were trying their best to make a game of it after the restart despite the disadvantage. Greg Kiltie went on a marauding run into the Celtic half on 58 minutes and worked his way into the box but saw his shot blocked. But in truth it was the visitors who looked more likely and they came close to furthering their lead a minute later only for O'Riley to be thwarted by a terrific save from Hemming who touched over the bar. Celtic would add a third soon after when Greg Taylor got on to a Bernardo ball over the top and volleyed into the net on the hour mark.

Elvis Bwomono was handed a St Mirren debut when he replaced Ryan Flynn on 65 minutes. He was part of a double substitution that saw Jonah Ayunga also come on in place of Mikael Mandron.

Furuhashi missed a big chance to add a fourth for Celtic as the game reached its final 20 minutes and that would be his last action as he was replaced by Hyeongyu Oh on 71 minutes. Another Celtic substitute - Liel Abada - came close to adding his name to the scoresheet 10 minutes after his introduction, but he was denied by a brilliant stop from Hemming. The Saints number one then made a good double save four minutes later to deny Oh and Hyunjun Yang from adding to Celtic's tally.
