Saints defeated after first-half Killie goal

St Mirren were defeated at The SMiSA Stadium in league action for just a second time this season as the Buddies lost 1-0 to Kilmarnock.

Marley Watkins' first-half strike was enough to secure the points for the Ayrshire side and see them move four points clear of the Buddies in the cinch Premiership and consign Saints to just a second loss in 10 home league matches this season.

There were two changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday. James Bolton came in from the start as did Toyosi Olusanya in place of Thierry Small and the injured Alex Greive.

Saints started brightly and thought they had taken a 14th minute lead when Jonah Ayunga stuck the ball in the net. The forward reacted quickest to Will Dennis' save from Olusanya's strike, but the offside flag was raised. A VAR check confirmed that Olusanya was narrowly offside in the build up to the goal.

But it was the away side that took the lead when Marley Watkins fired them ahead on 25 minutes. The Killie forward peeled away from the Saints defence and slammed high into the net after being slipped in by Matthew Kennedy.

The visitors were in the ascendancy and came close to adding a second when Brad Lyons' good delivery had to be headed clear by Marcus Fraser with Kyle Vassell lurking at the far post. Kilmarnock were then awarded a free-kick in a decent area just outside the Saints box after loose possession saw the Buddies lose the ball and Richard Taylor booked for hauling down Daniel Armstrong. The Killie winger took the free-kick but it deflected wide. VAR checked for a possible penalty for handball, but the check ruled no handball and no penalty.

Saints looked to try and find their way back into the match but all the Buddies could muster before the interval was a Scott Tanser volley from 25 yard that was pushed away by Dennis.

After a fairly uneventful start to the second-half, Saints boss Stephen Robinson made two changes on 64 minutes when he introduced Conor McMenamin and Mikael Mandron for Marcus Fraser and Olusanya. McMenamin almost made an instant impact when he flashed a dangerous ball across the face of goal but there were no takers in black and white to force home.

Stav Nahmani then came on with 15 minutes remaining to replace Ayunga and he too wasn't far away from making a quick impact when he found himself in good space inside the box. He twisted to try and get the shot away but his attempt was well blocked by Corrie Ndaba. Moments later Bolton came agonisingly close to the equaliser when he rose the highest to meet a cross but his header was brilliant saved by Dennis who got a fingertip to it to touch over.

The visitors almost doubled their lead with 10 minutes to go when Brad Lyons' header had to be cleared off the line before Hemming got two powerful hands behind a powerful drive from the edge of the area.

Saints continued to put pressure on in search of a leveller and it looked like it may come six minutes from time when a ball to the back post from McMenamin found Tanser but he somehow couldn't force the ball over the line as the Buddies were beaten.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Your Home-Start Support Helped 180 Children

Your overwhelming Home-Start support, donating gifts at our match at the beginning of December against Ross County, has helped local families massively as thanks to you, 180 children and 50 parents received Christmas gifts.

We called for fans to contribute and join the efforts of Home-Start in ensuring families with young children have an extra helping hand. You exceeded all expectations with generous donations of toys, selection boxes and toiletries. Often focus is solely on children but with your additional support, parents and carers were gifted too.

It is challenging raising a young family all year-round and Christmas brings added demands to parents. The strategic partnership between the club and Home-Start has the potential to further increase the impact of any essential fundraising activities. St Mirren understand Home-Start’s purpose as it matches our community-driven vision.

Through working alongside Home-Start, the club have committed to providing family tickets for all generations to enjoy a day out together, making memories. The initiative is in addition Help a Buddie ticket donations. The profile of Home-Start is also raised as regular updates are shared. St Mirren’s Chief Operating Officer, Keith Lasley is an ambassador for the local charity to ensure we fully collaborate with the dedicated team members who help families across Renfrewshire and Inverclyde.

Thank you for exemplifying the power of Scottish football fans.

Keith Lasley, St Mirren Chief Operating Officer, shared the dedication the club has to put the community first in decision-making: “The generosity of our fans is special and is exactly what our club stands for. St Mirren’s mission is to be the best community centred football club and through the strategic partnership with Home-Start we can widen our reach and offer extra support to even more families.

“Each week our family stand is filled with parents or carers, grandparents, children and siblings, all making memories. We understand all families can need support and alongside Home-Start, our own initiatives like Help a Buddie and St Mirren charitable foundation activities, we’ll help make sure those across Renfrewshire who ask for a helping hand have options to receive support.”

Lisa Carberry, Home-Start Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Interim Director, expressed her gratitude to the club: “It is fantastic to have St Mirren fans join our efforts in supporting local families with young children. It is not easy to raise a family and we want parents, carers and grandparents to know we are here to be a listening ear and helping hand. We are overwhelmed by the support shown to us from the Paisley club’s sports fans.”

Up Next: St Mirren v Kilmarnock (27th Dec)

It's our final home match of 2023 as we face Kilmarnock at The SMiSA Stadium on Wednesday night.

Saints' home form has been strong this season with five wins, three draws and just one defeat from our nine home league matches this season. That was supplemented by three home wins from three in the Viaplay Cup.

Despite our strong home form, Kilmarnock leapfrogged the Buddies in the cinch Premiership on Saturday after their 2-1 win at Rugby Park against St Johnstone. That result - coupled with a 2-0 St Mirren defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle - saw Derek McInnes' men move into fourth place in the league. With just a point separating the two sides, a St Mirren win on Wednesday night would see the Buddies move back ahead of Kilmarnock.

The only meeting of the two this season ended in a 1-1 stalemate in September as Kyle Magennis' own-goal gave Saints a share of the spoils at Rugby Park after Brad Lyons had put the hosts ahead.

Kilmarnock defeated Saints on their last visit to The SMiSA Stadium in April with goals from Liam Donnelly and Christian Doidge giving the Ayrshire side a 2-0 victory.

Our last league win over Kilmarnock came in February 2021 with Saints winning 2-0 at The SMiSA Stadium thanks to goals from Kyle McAllister and Jon Obika.

Manager admits Saints didn't deserve anything from game

I thought we got what we deserved today. We lacked the quality to penetrate."

Manager Stephen Robinson admitted his side didn't deserve to take anything from the match after a 2-0 loss to Hearts at Tynecastle.

Shankland double sees Buddies beaten by Hearts at Tynecastle

St Mirren were defeated by Hearts in the cinch Premiership as a Lawrence Shankland double either side of half-time saw the Buddies beaten in Gorgie.

Shankland opened the scoring not long after the half-hour mark when he headed home unmarked at the far post. He added a second quickly after the break with a stunning strike to give the hosts all the points.

Stephen Robinson made one change from the side that drew with Motherwell at The SMiSA Stadium last weekend. Alex Greive came in from the start in place of Stav Nahmani who dropped to the bench. Ryan Flynn returned to the squad after a hamstring injury and he took his place among the substitutes in place of Conor McMenamin who missed out due to illness.

The hosts were presented a decent opportunity in the opening moments of the game after breaking forward immediately after kick-off and seeing Aidan Denholm fouled by Alex Gogic. The Cypriot international was booked and Hearts awarded a free-kick in a good area 20 yards from goal. Alex Cochrane took but fired his low effort well wide of the left-hand post.

There was little between the sides in the opening exchanges and Saints look to profit from slack play in the Hearts defence on 12 minutes, Jonah Ayunga got a shot away but saw his deflected effort spin into the hands of Hearts goalkeeper Zander Clark. The forward won a free-kick 15 minutes later around 25 yards from the Hearts goal after being pulled back. Scott Tanser stepped up but sent his attempt wide.

Hearts drew first blood on 33 minutes when Shankland headed home from close-range at the far post. Saints failed to clear their lines at a corner and that allowed Cochrane to swing the ball to the back stick where the unmarked Shankland was alone in plenty of space to meet it and force over the line despite Zach Hemming getting two hands on it.

Shankland scored his and Hearts' second early into the second-half with a stunning effort from the edge of the box just four minutes after the restart. The forward picked the ball up just outside the area, spun round and sent a brilliant finish into the top corner to double the home side's advantage. He could have had his hat-trick on 57 minutes when Beni Baningime robbed Richard Taylor off the ball near the penalty area and threaded the ball through to the Hearts number nine. But Shankland poked at the effort and Hemming blocked.

The Buddies came close to pulling a goal back twice within the space of a minute just after the hour mark. Gogic saw a header well saved by Clark who, at full-stretch, managed to claw the ball behind. A scramble from the resultant corner almost saw Thierry Small force home but his effort was cleared off the line by Kye Rowles.

Saints made three changes soon after with Nahmani, Toyosi Olusanya and Lewis Jamieson introduced in place of Greg Kiltie, Ayunga and Greive. Mikael Mandron and Caolan Boyd-Munce were also brought on 10 minutes later as Small and Mark O'Hara made way. But the changes couldn't see the Buddies force a way back into the match and it was Hearts who almost rounded off their afternoon with a third when a rare Hemming mistake saw the goalkeeper pass the ball straight to Jambos substitute Macaulay Tait inside the box, but the Saints number one made amends with a good save to deny the youngster.
