Morgan: I knew I could get back for the run-in

Lewis Morgan says he believed he could get back in action before the season's end, but is surprised at how quickly he has managed to make his return.

The winger made his comeback as a substitute in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Falkirk - just two weeks after ligament damage and bone bruising in the win over Ayr United looked to have ended his season.

20 year-old Morgan came on at the Falkirk Stadium in the 81st minute to rapturous applause from the away end and he confessed he's happy to return to the fold for the remaining three matches of the season.

Speaking to stmirren.com after Saturday's draw, Morgan said: "I was a bit down-heartened when I heard that was my season over.

But I was always positive and I knew I could get myself back and I'm just delighted to be back now. I'm not sure how I've managed to do it so quickly but I feel good so hopefully that's all behind me.

"It's a wee bit surreal considering where I was two weeks ago to where I am now, but that's where you want to be. Especially after the derby win during the week, it just makes you want to get off the sidelines and play your part in the run-in.

"You don't want to be the sidelines and out of the picture. You want to be back as soon as you can so I'm just happy to be back."

Saints led Falkirk twice on Saturday before picking up what could be a precious point in the Buddies bid for survival. The winger admits they were pleased with a point coming off the back of the 4-1 win over Morton last Tuesday.

It's one of the hardest places to come - they are second in the league for a reason. If you had looked at the fixtures at the start of the week, four points from six is a good return. The way the game has panned out we've given away two goals from set pieces which isn't ideal. We know that's something we'll look at this week and try to eradicate. On the whole, four points from six is a very good return.

"We've three huge games coming up for the club starting with Dundee United this weekend. We know going in into all three games that we are going to try and win every one. There's a great confidence in the team now. We are resilient, we are very hard to beat and playing really good football so we'll be going into those games with all the confidence in the world and hopefully we can do a job.

Stevie Mallan's second half strike in the derby win over Morton last week saw the midfielder hit his ninth goal of the season, putting him level with Morgan.

"He keeps going on about it," Morgan joked. "He's saying that's him equalled me, but at least I can argue that I have done it in less games! It's a good hit from Stevie, he's got that in his locker. He's a goalscoring midfielder, you could see that last season.

"Without speaking for him, we probably both should've had a few more over the course of the season. I'll definitely be trying to get more than him before the end of the season anyway."

Reaction: Jack Ross on the draw with Falkirk

Jack Ross gives stmirren.com his thoughts on today's 2-2 draw with Falkirk at the Falkirk Stadium.

Goals from Rory Loy and Stephen McGinn helped Saints to the draw which extends their unbeaten run in the Ladbrokes Championship to seven matches.

Match Report: Falkirk 2-2 St Mirren

St Mirren extended their unbeaten run in the Ladbrokes Championship to seven matches with a 2-2 draw against Falkirk.

The Buddies took the lead twice thanks to goals from Rory Loy and Stephen McGinn before being pegged back on two occasions by Lee Miller and Bob McHugh.

The point keeps St Mirren in 8th place with just three matches remaining.

Saints started the match in hungry fashion with Kyle Magennis almost netting his third goal in two weeks when he intercepted a loose pass on the half way line and charged forward. The 18 year-old burst into the box and lashed a powerful effort into the arms of Robbie Thomson.

The early pressure would pay off with just six minutes on the clock when Rory Loy scored against his former team. A ball across from Adam Eckersley on the left almost found it's target in John Sutton. The striker was unable to get ahead of his marker, but the ball fell kindly to Loy who smashed St Mirren into the lead.

And one could've almost become two very soon after when Cammy Smith's header almost doubled Saints advantage. Goalscorer Loy clipped the ball into the box where the loanee looked to have nodded Saints 2-0 up only for Thomson to push away.

St Mirren looked in control, but the hosts found themselves level on 20 minutes through Lee Miller. A free kick 25 yards from goal was whipped in to the back post by James Craigen. It looked to be drifting out for a goal kick, but Luca Gasparotto managed to square the ball to Miller who tapped in from close range.

Falkirk had gotten themselves a footing in the match which proved to be end-to-end until the end of the half. Miller blazed over minutes before a fast counter from Saints saw Loy send an effort wide.

The Buddies won a free kick just before half time after Mallan was brought down. The 21 year-old took it low, but Thomson did well to deny him a 10th goal of the season.

Half Time: Falkirk 1-1 St Mirren

The first chance of the second half fell for Saints with the impressive Magennis curling an effort into the arms of Thomson.

Saints won a free kick in 'Mallan Territory' soon after when Loy was nudged by Mark Kerr. Mallan stepped up but smacked the attempt off the Falkirk wall. The Buddies won the ball after it broke and worked it down the right side with Magennis sending a low fizzing ball into the six yard box. However, Thomson was there to claim.

The Buddies took the lead for the second time on the hour mark when Stephen McGinn curled a shot from 20 yards into the top corner. The captain found the ball up and picked his spot leaving the stretching Thomson with no chance. It was a stunning goal from the skipper and put Saints back in the driver's seat.

Falkirk reacted by bringing on Nathan Austin, Fraser Aird and Bob McHugh in place of John Baird, Mark Kerr and Lee Miller. And it was McHugh who got the hosts equalised with 13 minutes to go with his first touch. A free kick deep in the St Mirren half was whipped in to the box by Aird. Saints tried to get the ball away but the ball fell to McHugh who slammed home to pull Falkirk level for a second time.

Lewis Morgan made his return from injury sooner than expected when he replaced Sutton on 81 minutes. It was a pleasing moment for the Saints late on as they settled for a point in the race for Championship survival.

Sutton: We've got to finish the job

John Sutton stressed that St Mirren have to keep going in their bid to avoid relegation ahead of tomorrow's match against Falkirk.

The Englishman made his 100th start for St Mirren in Tuesday night's win over Morton, becoming the third Buddies player this season to do so.

He marked the occasion in the perfect manner, scoring his 43rd goal for the Saints, as an impressive performance saw St Mirren defeat their Renfrewshire rivals 4-1 and move out of the relegation play-off spot.

Having not beaten Morton until Tuesday, the striker admits he was delighted to finally get one over Morton - not just for the players, but for the supporters who he praised for their backing throughout the season. And now he is urging his teammates to keep going until the end of the season.

Speaking to stmirren.com, he said: “It was fantastic. The result on Saturday wasn’t exactly what we wanted but it lifted us off the bottom.

Coming into tonight’s game we knew we could get out of the relegation places. We let ourselves down a couple times in the derby this season so it was terrific to get the win. It was a terrific performance from everyone, really solid at the back and obviously four goals at the end means it was a great night”

“The fans have been brilliant. St Mirren should be challenging at the top of the table and I think everyone knows that. We’ve been down the bottom and cut adrift to an extent but I can’t remember the fans giving us any pelters. It is a great result for them and I think the players are so happy for them as well.

"We’ve just got to kick on now and try and finish the job off. It’s in our own hands now. It’s a tricky run in we’ve got with away games and playing the top teams in the league but there’s no reason why we can’t do it.”

Having been in the relegation zone for much of the season, recent form has lifted the Buddies in to eighth in the table.

It's a remarkable turnaround for a side that was eight points adrift just last month.

Its brilliant," Sutton said of the changes in fortunes. "I remember the game against Ayr who was the next team above us at the time and it was such a massive result for us. We really kicked on from there.

"To be fair to teams like Ayr and Dumbarton they picked up good results as well. So we had to go on a good run of form.

"It’s an incredible turnaround. The frustrating thing is we felt we had ability in the group but now we’ve actually managed to do it on the field.”

The Buddies currently sit one point above Raith Rovers and three points clear of bottom placed Ayr United. The last four fixtures include tough away trips to Falkirk, Dundee United and league leaders Hibernian. But Sutton is confident the side can pick up the results to avoid relegation.

It's about as tough a run as you could probably get," he said. "But we’re confident and our form is good. We know we are capable of it. I think everyone will enjoy tonight but we need to concentrate on the next game. The ability is there to pick up results.”

Match Preview: Falkirk (15th April)

St Mirren make the trip to Falkirk on Saturday afternoon as they face Peter Houston's side at the Falkirk stadium in another key game.

The Buddies head into tomorrow's fixture in a fine run of form win four wins out of the last five league games.

Tomorrow's match will be the fourth meeting of the sides this season with Saints yet to get one over the Bairns.

Falkirk visited the Paisley 2021 stadium on the 1st October in their first meeting of the season. Tom Walsh’s 87th minute equaliser gained The Buddies an important point after Craig Sibbald’s ninth minute goal gave the visitors the lead.

In their second fixture of the season St Mirren took the lead as Lewis Morgan scored half way through the first half. However, Falkirk came back in the second half with a goal from Lee Miller, and two late strikes from Bob McHugh and Myles Hippolyte in an eventful game which saw red for Jack Baird.

Their last encounter came at the end of January with The Bairns making their second visit of the season to Paisley. John Baird was at the double for the away side as they closed out the month with a 2-1 win. St Mirren’s Rory Loy gave the side late hope in the 77th minute but it was to no avail as Falkirk came out the victors.

The Saints last win over the The Bairns came in the 2009/10 season with a 3-1 away win in the Scottish Premier League. Goals from Craig Dargo, Billy Mehmet and Tom Brighton sealed three points at the Falkirk Stadium back in October 2009.

The Buddies head in to the game after a huge derby win on Tuesday night. They earned a 4-1 victory, the first derby triumph of the season, with Stelios Demetriou, Stevie Mallan, John Sutton and Gary MacKenzie on the score sheet. On the other hand Peter Houstin’s side come in to the game in a mixed bag of form with three wins, a draw and two defeats. Last time out they shared the points in a 1-1 draw with Dundee United after a late goal from Luke Leahy.

Both sides come in to the game aiming for the three points for different reasons. A win could take St Mirren above seventh place Dumbarton and boost Buddies survival hopes further after finally climbing away from the bottom two spots. While three points would help solidify Falkirk's attempt to finish in second place as they aim to secure promotion via the play-offs.
