Jim Goodwin confident Saints will come good in front of goal

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin is confident his side will build upon their solid defensive record and come good in front of goal.

Goodwin's side have the fourth best defensive record in the Ladbrokes Premiership having only conceded eight goals from their opening eight league matches. But the Buddies are the league's lowest scorers.

While it's been a source of frustration, the manager knows how hard his team are working to rectify it and believes the players will be rewarded for their efforts.

Speaking to stmirren.com ahead of Saturday's match at home to St Johnstone, Goodwin said: "It's important that any team that comes to play us on our own patch realises that they are going to be in for a game.

"The only goal we've conceded at home in the league this season was against Rangers and it wasn't from open play.

"We've looked solid, we've looked organised and we've taken a lot of plaudits for that side of it.

"But the bit we can't get away from is the fact that we need to score goals.

"As much as we want to make our home ground a difficult place for the opposition we also want to make it an entertaining place for our own fans to come and we want to try and put a product on the park that is worthy of the fans turning out week after week to get behind the team.

"We're doing all we can to try and sort that side of the game but it's trying to find that balance between being a good, organised outfit and also being an attacking-minded, entertaining one as well.

"I can never question the players commitment or effort," he continued.

"They are a great bunch and brilliant to work with during the week. The boys are doing all they can to try and get that bit together in the final third. It just hasn't happened at the moment but I am very confident that it will turn. We've got to remain positive and continue to believe it will turn.

"I would be a lot more concerned if we weren't putting balls in good areas and weren't creating good chances.

"Even against Motherwell a few weeks ago at 1-0 in the second half we got in some really good positions and created some good opportunities and just unfortunately we've not been able to do the hard part and put the ball in the net."

Saints are back in action at the Simple Digital Arena on Saturday following the international break with St Johnstone the visitors to Paisley.

The Perth side sit at the foot of the table having failed to win in the league so far this season, but Goodwin is expecting a tough battle against Tommy Wright's side.

"It's going to be a really difficult game against St Johnstone who are a good side and it's a really important game for us," he said.

"Tommy Wright's teams are renowned for their organisation and their hard work and I expect nothing different at the weekend.

"I watched a few of their games back last week. Although they lost 1-0 at home to Motherwell recently I thought they deserved to win the game. They created more opportunities, had more shots on target and created the more clear cut chances on the day.

"I certainly believe there are things we can exploit in the St Johnstone defence but I think we need to be very wary of them in an attacking perspective as well. They have some really good attacking players, some very dangerous players and they've got good pace in the team as well.

"We will have to be as organised and as switched on as we have been defensively at home, but hopefully we can exploit the weaknesses that we think are there and use that to our advantage at the weekend."

Tickets for Saturday's match are on-sale at the St Mirren Ticket Office and online.
