Match Preview: Dundee United v St Mirren (30th Nov)

St Mirren travel to Dundee on Saturday to face Dundee United in the William Hill Premiership.

Stephen Robinson's men go into this weekend's match on the back of a good run of form that has seen them pick up 10 points from the last 12 available.

The Buddies returned from the final international break of 2024 with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen at The SMiSA Stadium. Goals from Toyosi Olusanya and Richard Taylor saw Saints inflict a first league defeat of the season on the Dons.

A win on Saturday would see Saints leapfrog United in the William Hill Premiership with the Arabs sitting two points ahead of the Buddies.

Competition: William Hill Premiership
Date: Saturday 30th November 2024
Kick-off: 3pm
Venue: Tannadice Park

The Opposition

Dundee United have defied their newly promoted status to sit in fourth place in the William Hill Premiership this season. Five wins and five draws in their first 13 league matches have the Arabs sitting on 20 points.

Jim Goodwin's side picked up a point on their return from the international break following a creditable 1-1 draw away to Rangers. That result kept United just three points off the Ibrox side heading into December.

United have prevailed in the two meetings between the two sides this season. Both matches have been closely contested, but it's been United who have come out on top winning 1-0 on each occasion. Ross Graham's first-half goal was enough to see United triumph in our Premier Sports Cup meeting at Tannadice in August, while a late Emmanuel Adegboyega saw the Arabs win 1-0 in Paisley in league action.

Saints are unbeaten in their last four league meetings at Tannadice, winning three and drawing one. Our last win away to United came in August 2022 when a brace from Curtis Main and a late Alex Greive goal saw the Buddies win 3-0.

The Opposition

Aberdeen have had a terrific start to their season with the Dons currently sitting joint top of the William Hill Premiership and unbeaten in the league so far this season.

Manager Jimmy Thelin has lost just one match in charge of the Granite City side, losing 6-0 to Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup at the start of the month. But despite that setback, the Dons bounced back to win 4-1 at home to Dundee before the international break.

Aberdeen have won 10 of their 11 William Hill Premiership matches, their only dropped points coming away to Celtic where they battled back from 2-0 to draw 2-2 at Celtic Park.

The Dons were victorious in the only meeting between the two sides this season, winning 3-1 at Pittodrie in August. Toyosi Olusanya levelled for Saints heading into half-time, but two second-half goals saw Aberdeen pick up the points.

Saints won in dramatic fashion on Aberdeen's last visit to Paisley. Two goals in the space of a minute deep into injury-time from Mark O'Hara and Olusanya sparked wild scenes at The SMiSA Stadium as the Buddies came from behind to win 2-1 in March.

Those three draws came off the back of three defeats on the spin, losing to United (2-3), Motherwell (1-2) and Rangers (0-1).

Saints have already faced Hibs this season with the Buddies running out 3-0 winners at The SMiSA Stadium on the opening day of the season. Roland Idowu netted the opener shortly after half-time before a late double from Oisin Smyth secured a first day victory for Stephen Robinson's side.

St Johnstone come into the match in confident mood having put together a good run of form since the appointment of Simo Valakari as their manager.

The Perth Saints followed up an impressive 3-0 win at home to Ross County with a 2-1 win away to Dundee on Saturday in Valakari's first match in the dugout since his appointment at the beginning of the month. Those two victories have moved St Johnstone into sixth place on 10 points.

The Buddies were victorious in two of the three meetings between the two last season, winning both matches at The SMiSA Stadium. The first came in October 2023 when goals from Keanu Baccus, Mikael Mandron (x2) and Greg Kiltie saw Saints winning 4-0 in Paisley. Mandron was on the scoresheet again in a 2-0 victory in February of this year - the last time the two sides faced off. After starting the season playing their home matches at Hampden, Rangers have won their two William Hill Premiership home matches since returning Ibrox last month. A 1-0 win over Hibernian at the end of last month was followed up by a 2-0 victory over St Johnstone.

St Mirren's last win against Rangers came during the 2020/21 season when a late goal from Conor McCarthy saw Saints win 3-2 at The SMiSA Stadium in the league cup and end Rangers' unbeaten domestic run. Our last win at Ibrox came back in 1991 with Kevin McGowne's first-half goal giving us a 1-0 victory.

Date: Saturday 19th October 2024
Kick-off: 3pm
Venue: Tynecastle Park

The Opposition

Hearts have this week appointed Neil Critchley as their new Head Coach following the dismissal of Steven Naismith last month. The Englishman will take charge of the Jam Tarts for the first time this weekend when Saints head to Tynecastle.

St Mirren and Hearts have already met in the William Hill Premiership this season, with the Buddies winning 2-1 at The SMiSA Stadium last month. Toyosi Olusanya scored the winner for Saints after Craig Halkett had cancelled out an early own goal from Gerald Taylor.

The Edinburgh side sit at the bottom of the league having picked up just two points from their first eight William Hill Premiership matches. An opening day 0-0 draw with Rangers at Tynecastle gave cause for optimism, but a run of eight straight defeats in all competitions, culminating in their 2-1 loss to Saints, saw Steven Naismith removed from his position as Head Coach.

Hearts picked up their first win of the season away to Dinamo Minsk in the UEFA Conference League just before the international break, an injury-time Yan Dhanda goal giving them a 2-1 victory. That was followed up by a narrow 3-2 defeat against Aberdeen at Pittodrie in the William Hill Premiership.

It'll be our last home match for over three weeks with the upcoming international break soon followed by away trips to Hearts and Rangers.

The Opposition

It's been a decent start to life back in the William Hill Premiership for Dundee United, with the Arabs losing only one of their six league matches since promotion back to the top flight. That came after a 1-0 defeat at home to Rangers last month.

Of the other five matches, Jim Goodwin's men have won two and drawn three. One of those draws came last weekend with United coming from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 away to Kilmarnock.

The two sides have already met this season with United edging Saints out of the Premier Sports Cup at the last 16 stage. Ross Graham's first-half goal was enough to give the Arabs a 1-0 win at Tannadice.

St Mirren were unbeaten against United during season 2022/23 - winning twice and drawing once. The first win was at Tannadice with Saints running out 3-0 victors in August 2022. The Buddies followed that up with a 2-1 win at The SMiSA Stadium two months later. The last league meeting between the two ended up stalemate after a 1-1 draw at Tannadice in March 2023.

The win over Hearts saw Saints move into fifth position in the William Hill Premiership having taken eight points from our first six matches.

The Opposition

It's been a relatively good start to the season for Saturday's opponents with the Steelmen approaching the weekend's game after securing their place in the last four of the Premier Sports Cup.

An injury-time penalty from Lennon Miller saw the 'Well win 2-1 against Dundee United to progress to the semi-final.

Saints were unbeaten against Motherwell in four meetings last season, winning twice and drawing twice. The Buddies won 1-0 at The SMiSA Stadium in the Premier Sports Cup thanks to a goal from Caolan Boyd-Munce. Scott Tanser's goal was enough a few weeks later to secure a 1-0 victory at Fir Park in league action. The other two matches, both in the league, ended 0-0 and 1-1.

Saturday's visitors sit at the foot of the league table having taken just one point from their first five.
