Diarmuid O'Carroll: Fast start was what we needed

Assistant manager Diarmuid O'Carroll was pleased with our fast start in this afternoon's win over Ross County in the cinch Premiership.

Declan Gallagher early goal gives Saints the points

St Mirren won at the SMiSA Stadium for the eighth time in the cinch Premiership this season following a 1-0 victory over Ross County.

Declan Gallagher's early goal was enough to give the Buddies a well-deserved three points and there was a clean sheet for Trevor Carson on a day that the club paid its respects to former goalkeeper Billy Thomson who sadly passed away earlier this month.

Both sides take part in a minute's applause to pay tribute to ex-St Mirren goalkeeper Billy Thomson (Image: Allan Picken)

Saints were boosted by the news that Curtis Main passed a late fitness test after being a huge doubt the day before with a hamstring issue. Greg Kiltie and Ryan Flynn came into midfield in place of the injured Alex Gogic and Keanu Baccus, while Charles Dunne returned in place of Richard Taylor and Thierry Small replaced Scott Tanser.

St Mirren made a bright start and that was rewarded with the opening goal on seven minutes. It was a brilliant header from Gallagher as he rose above the Ross County defence to bullet home from Ryan Strain's corner.

Stephen Robinson's side controlled the opening 25 minutes and Strain had two decent opportunities to double the Buddies' lead. On 22 minutes he was found at the back post by Marcus Fraser and his effort was blocked by County goalkeeper Ross Laidlaw. A minute later a header from the Staggies defence fell nicely to the Saints full-back, but he volleyed well over.

Ross County's first real chance came just before the half-hour mark when ex-Saint Keith Watson slid in to meet a George Harmon ball to the back post, but he fired over.

The Staggies had a big opportunity early into the second 45 after good work from substitute Owura Edwards down the right-hand side. He drove into the box and saw his effort blocked by the feet of Trevor Carson. The ball came back out to Nohan Kenneh who knocked over from close-range. County had another decent chance on 53 minutes when half-time substitute Ross Callachan fired over from the edge of the box after being first on to Jordan White's knock-down.

Saints dealt with the early second-half pressure from County and had two decent chances after the hour mark. Main turned a low Kiltie ball wide on 62 minutes before Watt spun well in the box on 66 minutes but shot over.

St Mirren could have killed the game off as we headed into the final 10 minutes. Main had a shot deflected on to the post in 78 minutes and four minutes later County goalkeeper Laidlaw made a brilliant double save to deny substitute Kieran Offord and Strain.

Ross County were reduced to 10 men heading into stoppage time following a VAR check as Owura Edwards was given his marching orders for a foul on Carson. Saints would see the game out, but goalscorer Gallagher had to be substituted off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Help a Buddie | Men's Shed

We visited Paisley's Men Shed to give away the latest batch of Help a Buddie match tickets for this Saturday's cinch Premiership fixture against Ross County.

The Shed was packed with a whole host of characters with Archie, Jim, Gerry, Ronnie and Taz all present and more than willing to show us around. We were given a tour around their workshop and shown everything the group had been working on. This ranged from small benches to a decorative paisley pattern pond. The 'Shedders' were very thankful for the donation and were all looking forward to attending the game.

Speaking on the ticket donation, the 'Shedders' had this to say:

The tickets provide another opportunity for the Shedders to enjoy a shared experience and it’s in line with our aims to reduce isolation and support our community."

About Paisley’s Men’s Shed

After Men’s Sheds were successfully established in Foxbar and Barrhead, Paisley Men’s Shed was set up with the help of the St Mirren Charitable Foundation and local charity, STAR Project. Members moved into a shed on the grounds of the SMiSA Stadium in March 2019.

The Men’s Shed is a community space where learning is made possible through shared connections. The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds but the difference is that garden sheds and their activities are often solitary in nature, whilst Men’s Sheds are the opposite. They encourage social connections, friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge and, of course, a lot of laughter.

The Paisley Shedders get together every Tuesday and Thursday to pursue practical interests at leisure and practise skills like woodworking, making and mending. They build everything from bird boxes to vegetable troughs.

The Shed and the community have a harmonious relationship. Tools and equipment required are often donated by the people of Paisley, which the Shedders use in their efforts to build things required to help the community.

The Shed brings together men from all walks of life. For example, men who have retired are happy to pass on their knowledge to the younger generation who are eager for an alternative way to spend their time. The Shed allows members to practice skills, grow in confidence, and engage in activities, whilst developing relationships and providing a sense of purpose.

This is what local Shedder, Archie had to say about the concept:

Men’s Sheds are basically community spaces for men to connect, converse and create.

"For us it’s that local men can benefit from regular social interactions, new and improved skills, and regular, active participation in activities they enjoy."

Before The Paisley Shed was founded, the site within the grounds of the SMiSA Stadium was a left-over space devoid of any use. The Shedders have worked hard to make the once empty plot of land a thriving hub for creativity, social life, and community empowerment – something that Paisley can be proud of.

Archie told stmirren.com about his involvement in starting up The Paisley Men’s Shed:

I volunteered my joinery and teaching skills for another local charity that had hopes of running a Shed.

"This didn’t come to fruition but some of the guys involved felt strongly that this type of movement had too much benefit to give up on. So a few of us approached STAR Project and asked for help to establish and register a Men’s Shed.

"We met in STAR Project premises and planned our Shed, though we remained 'shed-less' until St Mirren Charitable Foundation came on board as a partner and helped us with ground and cabins. It was a great team effort.

"Although STAR and St Mirren Charitable Foundation continue to support us, the actual development of the Shed is led by the men themselves and this is important in terms of ownership and autonomy."

Archie continued by telling us about the evolution of the charity saying: "The Shed and its membership evolves continually as the activities we do are based on the needs of our membership.

"For example, if someone comes along who has a skill with stonework, we might become involved in a community project that utilises that skill or we might purchase relevant equipment so that those skills can be shared."

Drop into Paisley Men’s Shed

The Shedders encouraged anyone who is interested in The Shed to drop in and have a look:

We’re all just a bunch of guys that initially felt nervous. We’re a friendly bunch, just pop in and see for yourself.

"If someone would rather bring a friend with them or even have someone meet them outside the gate, that’s ok too. Just let us know if we can do anything to help you take that step and the team at STAR Project can help with that."

Sheds around the country have increased health, happiness and connectivity among their members. Here is what Archie had to say about the 'Shed effect':

The Men Shed movement is a worldwide one and has well documented benefits such as reducing isolation and improving wellbeing. Having a physical and practical space here in Paisley, where men can meet up, share skills and talk together can have a huge impact on mental health and at the very least reduces the risk of loneliness.

"There’s no need to be lonely or miss out on some good company. Come and see us or go visit your nearest Shed if you’re not in our area. Increasing peer support, particularly for men, is vital to positive mental health."

We finished by talking about The Shedders’ goals for 2023 and the men had this to say:

We always have plans churning away in the background. STAR Project secured funding for an additional welfare cabin for the Shed so we can have extra inside space to accommodate new members and activities. Once that’s in situ we’ll have a lot of work to do kitting it out.

"We also intend to develop some of our outside space, rethinking what we need for our members and their interests. Lastly, we’ll be aiming to boost our membership further, so look out for us at community events and on social media."

Shedder Gerry had one last word regarding donations of timber: "All donations will be gratefully received but please ensure all wood has been de-nailed!"

About Help a Buddie

Help a Buddie is our brand-new initiative where St Mirren supporters have the chance to purchase and donate a match ticket for those less fortunate.

The Help a Buddie scheme will run for the entirety of the 2022/23 season and will continue to help benefit local community groups/organisations and those less fortunate supporters.

Stephen Robinson gives Alex Greive injury update

Stephen Robinson today confirmed that the prognosis of Alex Greive's injury is more positive than first thought and the forward may only face three to four weeks out following a scan result yesterday.

The New Zealand striker was substituted in the first-half of our Scottish Cup tie against Celtic with an ankle injury and it was feared he may miss the rest of the season.

We are hoping it will not be quite so serious but it will still be three weeks. We were fearing it could maybe be an end-of-season job.

"But we are looking at three to four weeks with Alex. So that is a huge boost for us considering we don't have loads and loads of options."

The manager also told press this afternoon that Alex Gogic, Keanu Baccus and Curtis Main are all doubts for tomorrow's cinch Premiership match against Ross County, with Scott Tanser is also ruled out after a hamstring injury at Motherwell on Wednesday night.

With Richard Tait and Jonah Ayunga on the sidelines options are limited for Saints, but the manager was keen to stress he will still have an experienced starting eleven tomorrow with youthful enthusiasm on the substitutes bench.

I have a lot of belief in the younger players.

"We haven't given them that game time yet but there's players in the building waiting on chances. Players with real experience waiting for chances and I have belief in them as well.

"Any team that potentially has six or seven starters potentially out – even the top teams – are going to find that a difficult situation.

"But I am not in the habit of making excuses. We deal with it, we get on with it, we make the very best of it and we will put out a very competitive team."

Tony Watt and Thierry Small visit Williamsburgh Primary School pupils

Williamsburgh Primary School were the latest Paisley Primary School to receive a visit from St Mirren with Tony Watt and Thierry Small visiting pupils ahead of our cinch Premiership match at home to Ross County.

After a day of footballing coaching from our Street Stuff coaches, the Saints loanees took part in a Q&A with pupils from all year groups and got the chance to meet a number of young St Mirren supporters who came dressed for the occasion.

Pupils received 30 tickets for this weekend's match and we look forward to welcoming them to the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday. We thank all at Williamsburgh for their hospitality.

Primary school visits are a vital part of our ongoing community engagement efforts with the club arranging more player visits to local schools as well as offering additional match day tickets for other matches throughout the season.

If your school would be interested in a visit by our first-team players then please contact info@stmirren.com.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Access to the North Stand will be from Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Dylan Reid departs to join Crystal Palace

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Dylan Reid's move to English Premier League Crystal Palace has now been finalised.

With his contract at Saints due to expire in the summer, the 17-year-old has moved to the Eagles on a three-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee with significant add-ons and sell-on.

A product of our Youth Academy, Dylan became the youngest ever player for St Mirren when he made his first-team debut at just 16 years and five days old in a cinch Premiership match away to Rangers in March 2021. It was an appearance which also saw Dylan become the youngest ever player to play in the SPFL Premiership.

He subsequently made a further seven appearances for the first-team with his last coming against Hearts at Tynecastle in January.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "Dylan is a kid with great potential and someone who I would have liked to have worked with more, but it was a very good deal for the football club and an ongoing deal that could rise.

It’s huge credit to the Academy and Allan McManus and his staff. We’re producing good players and that’s the lifeblood of the football club – bringing in players, developing them and selling them.

"Clubs in the English Premier League are paying for potential now and he has that. Crystal Palace have conducted themselves very well throughout the transfer as well which has to be credited."

We thank Dylan for his time at St Mirren and wish him the very best of luck in his future career.

Up Next: St Mirren v Ross County (18th Feb)

Saints are straight back to it on Saturday with Ross County the visitors to the SMiSA Stadium.

The Buddies go into Saturday's match following a narrow loss to Motherwell at Fir Park on Wednesday night. Two early Motherwell goals gave St Mirren too much to do despite Ryan Strain pulling a goal back. Stephen Robinson's side still sit in sixth place in the cinch Premiership following Wednesday night's match.

Ross County are in 11th place - one point ahead of bottom side Dundee United. Malky Mackay's side weren't in action at the weekend having been knocked out the Scottish Cup at the Fourth Round stage.

The Staggies have won one (3-0 v Kilmarnock), drawn one (1-1 v Hibernian) and lost one (1-2 v Rangers) of their last three league matches.

A stunning Richard Tait goal was enough to give St Mirren a 1-0 win over Ross County when the Staggies visited the SMiSA Stadium in August.

County came on top by the odd goal in five when we last faced them at the Global Energy Stadium in November. Goals from Ryan Strain and Mark O'Hara had us 2-1 ahead at the break, but two second-half goals saw the Staggies win 3-2.

Saints are unbeaten in five against Ross County at the SMiSA Stadium - a run that goes back to 2015.
