Everyone is Welcome | We're all Buddies

Over the past two years St Mirren Football Club has invested a lot of time and research into ensuring that we are inclusive to all, with zero discrimination. We firmly believe in supporting equality and diversity within St Mirren.

As a club we condemn all forms of discrimination in the strongest possible terms, including but not limited to, racism, sectarianism, sexism and homophobia. It is completely unacceptable, and has no place within football or wider society.

Supporters may have noticed signs displayed throughout The SMiSA Stadium this season that read 'Everyone is Welcome, We’re all Buddies.' This forms our campaign to promote inclusivity at St Mirren Football Club. We want to make the matchday experience at The SMiSA Stadium an enjoyable one for everyone.

The club has implemented action and training plans to ensure that we are on a journey with our learning and development, ensuring the club evolves as society changes.

From what seems like a simple action to display 'Everyone is Welcome, We’re all Buddies' posters throughout the stadium, to ensuring that the first team undertake mandatory Show Racism the Red Card training, we have considered our actions and have a plan in place to continue to learn and improve.

We have met with local groups over the past two years to learn about barriers to inclusion at our football matches, and to understand the steps we can take and what we can implement to improve the safety and inclusion of all supporters.

Our staff policies have been reviewed and updated and we undertake a fair recruitment process. We believe what we have implemented is working but will continue to make changes as required.

We are working with the local schools to include the younger generations and support deprivation and believe we are striking the right balance with these programmes, especially when teamed up with our Street Stuff programme, in conjunction with Renfrewshire Council, the police and fire brigade.

We are working hard in our community to support minority groups and provide tickets to matches and support through other avenues. We have also taken on a charity partner, Home-Start, to include families in our strategy to provide football for all.

Our official club strategy focuses on Paisley, People and Performance and this has a focus on diversity and inclusion, basing the decisions our club makes on what is best for the local community, the people who work for us and who are stakeholders in any capacity, and our performance to ensure that our team, on and off the pitch, feel safe coming to work, are included and are championed.

We firmly believe the changes that we have implemented, and our learning and development are supporting equality and diversity within the club. We will continue to improve our strategies, and to meet with minority groups to ensure that St Mirren FC is welcome to all.

St Mirren host Kilmarnock at The SMiSA Stadium in our final Saturday 3pm match of the 2023/24 season.

Saints could secure European football for the first time since 1987 if we win against Kilmarnock and Dundee fail to win at Tynecastle against Hearts.

Kilmarnock lost 4-1 to Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday. Despite taking an early lead, Derek McInnes' side were defeated after being reduced to 10 men when Joe Wright was given a red card. The Ayrshire side sit in fourth place - six points ahead of the Buddies.

Saints have yet to beat Kilmarnock this season, having drawn one and lost two of our three meetings in the cinch Premiership.

The two couldn't be separated in the first meeting this season with a Kyle Magennis own goal giving Saints a point at Rugby Park in September. Marley Watkins scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for the Ayrshire side when they visited the The SMiSA Stadium in December. Kilmarnock won 5-2 in the last meeting back in March.

St Mirren's last home win against Kilmarnock was in February 2021 when goals from Kyle McAllister and Jon Obika saw us win 2-0.

Delight as Alex Gogic signs a new three-year-deal

St Mirren Football Club is thrilled to announce that Alex Gogic has agreed a new three-year-deal to extend his stay at Saints.

The Cypriot defender’s contract was set to expire this summer, but he has now agreed a new contract that will see him remain at the club until summer 2027.

Alex has been a huge fans’ favourite since initially joining the club on loan from Hibernian in January 2022 before signing a permanent deal in August of that year.

Capped 29 times by Cyprus, Alex made a scoring debut for Saints in a 1-1 draw against Motherwell in February 2022. He has since made 90 appearances for the Buddies and has scored seven goals, the most recent of which came in Saturday’s important win against Dundee.

His performances at centre-half have earned him many plaudits this season as Saints push for a European place for the first time since 1987.

Speaking to stmirren.com, Alex said: "I'm very happy.

"We've been talking for a while but I wanted to focus on the games, but after Saturday I'm happy that it's done.

I'm probably playing the best football I have ever played. Big credit to the gaffer playing me at centre-back. I always fight against it but I'm happy I've had a great season and I think it's a big help from the players and all of the staff.

"From the first day I joined, the love I got, not only from the players and staff, but from the fans made it an easy decision. They [the fans] have been amazing to me from the first day.

I want to thank all my teammates for making this decision easy, the gaffer, all the staff and Jim Gillespie as well."

Manager Stephen Robinson was delighted to get the deal confirmed and added: "Goga has been exceptional this season and the season previously.

"He’s like two players in one because he can play in numerous positions. He’s excelled in the middle of a back three and we know we can put him in midfield in certain occasions in games.

It’s something we’ve been speaking about for a long time. He’s vital in terms of building the club and taking it forward. It’s a statement of intent from us going forward.

"He’s certainly had other options both in Scotland and England, but he chose to stay here. He’s very happy here, his family are very happy here and he knows the group of boys we’ve got are going to keep improving. It shows he is enjoying his football.

We’ve gone all out to ensure he stays. We were always quietly confident in the background as we knew he and his family were happy and we’re just delighted to get it over the line now."

St Mirren pay condolences following sad passing of Jim Rodger

St Mirren Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of 1959 Scottish Cup winner Jim Rodger.

Born in Cleland in September 1933, Jim began playing football at school, progressing through to the Wishaw High school first team. After school, he joined Cumnock Juniors before moving up to the senior game with Rangers in May 1952.

Jim joined St Mirren in 1955 and played his first match for Saints in a League Cup game against Kilmarnock. Over the next couple of years his appearances in the stripes were limited due to National Service.

It was to be January 1959 before he gained a regular starting place in the St Mirren team, just in time to play his part in Saints history as they reached the Scottish Cup Final. Having scored in the first three rounds of the competition against Peebles Rovers, Motherwell and Dunfermline, Jim was a vital part of the team that swept Celtic aside 4-0 in the semi-final before lining up against Aberdeen on 25th April 1959. Saints would win 3-1 to secure the Scottish Cup for the second time in our history.

In his seven years in Paisley, Jim played 155 matches and scored 44 times with his contributions seeing him nominated into the St Mirren Hall of Fame.

The thoughts of everyone at St Mirren are with Jim's loved ones at this sad time.

Manager delight at "excellent" performance in 100th match in charge

I thought from start to finish we were excellent."

Stephen Robinson gave his thoughts after Saints picked up a big win in Dundee on his 100th match in charge of the club.

St Mirren pick up important three points in Stephen Robinson's 100th match in charge

St Mirren picked up an important three points in the race for Europe after a brilliant win away to Dundee in Stephen Robinson's 100th match in charge.

Alex Gogic gave Saints a half-time lead before goals from Scott Tanser and Toyosi Olusanya put us further in front in the second-half. Dundee pulled a goal back through Michael Mellon, but it was not enough to stop the Buddies returning to Paisley with the points.

There was one change to the side that lost narrowly to Rangers last week with Greg Kiltie not fit enough to start the game having not trained during the week. Olusanya came in for the forward who was on the bench.

Saints started brightly - forcing a number of corners in the opening minutes with James Bolton putting a free header over in the third minute after meeting Caolan Boyd-Munce's ball in. Scott Tanser should have scored when he was found in space inside the area but he lashed the effort over. The offside flag was raised in any case.

Zach Hemming got two strong hands behind a powerful effort from Luke McCowan on 36 minutes. The Dundee captain had a lot of room to run into and let fly from 20 yards with the Saints goalkeeper down well to push away. Owen Dodgson then saw his follow-up deflected over.

The Buddies took the lead with just over five minutes of the half remaining. A Boyd-Munce corner was fed back out to Ryan Strain who swung the ball in from the right-hand side. The Dundee defence couldn't deal with it and Gogic reacted quickest to force home at the near post.

Gogic opens the scoring against Dundee

Dundee started the second-half with intent when Lyall Cameron had a powerful strike held by Hemming in the first minute after the restart.

But it was Saints who would have the best opportunity when Ryan Strain saw his free-kick tipped over the bar by McCracken on 58 minutes. Just a minute later the Buddies would double their advantage when Scott Tanser scored. A flick-on was met by Bolton who nodded on himself with Tanser managing to squeeze in ahead of the Dundee defence. The left-wing-back composed himself before smashing into the corner of the net to the delirium of the near 1,500 travelling support.

Scott Tanser fires home the second

It could have got better just three minutes later when substitute Keanu Baccus found Olusanya to send him one-on-one with the goalkeeper but the Dens stopper managed to block.

Olusanya would get his name on the scoresheet as he made it 3-0 with less than 20 minutes to go. Mikael Mandron found his path too crowded to get a shot away but slipped the ball to Olusanya on the left-hand side of the box. The forward fired into the net through the legs of McCracken.

Dundee pulled a goal back with 13 minutes to play when substitute Michael Mellon headed in from close-range. The forward met a header back across goal at the far post and nodded in to reduce the deficit.

The hosts would exert more pressure as they looked for a way back into the match with Cameron sending a long-range strike just by the post, while Hemming did well to tip a low McCowan hit on to the post as well. But Saints held firm and could have added a fourth in the final stages with James Scott seeing his effort from the edge of the area pushed away by McCracken.

In the end it was a perfect way for Saints to celebrate Stephen Robinson's 100th match in charge as the Buddies move five points ahead of Dundee with three to play.

Ayunga set for a few weeks out after operation

Stephen Robinson confirmed that Jonah Ayunga will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing an operation on a knee injury.

However, the manager told the press this morning that the injury will only rule out the forward for three or four weeks. It was also confirmed that the injury sustained isn't on the same knee that ruled the 26-year-old out for the majority of 2023.

Jonah joins Hyeokkyu Kwon on the sidelines after the Korean midfielder also saw his season ended with a hamstring injury.

The manager also said that Elvis Bwomono and Greg Kiltie will have to be assessed ahead of tomorrow's match away to Dundee, with youngster Evan Mooney being called up from the youth team to be a part of the squad.
