Match Preview: Queen of the South v St Mirren

This Saturday will see St Mirren take on Queen of the South at Palmerston Park, as we enter the final quarter of the season with The Buddies still at the top of the Scottish Championship table.

This will be the last time the two sides will face off this season, with The Saints coming out on top on the three previous encounters. St Mirren's last league came against Dunfermline last Saturday, where the team ran out 2-0 winners comfortably in the end. The Doonhamers last game was on Tuesday night - their rescheduled fixture against Dundee Utd - where The Arabs won 3-1.There was some good news for Saint's fans during the week though, as title chasing Livingston failed to beat Morton. The game finished 1-1 after a late deflected effort from the West Lothian side crept inside the post to earn them a point.

The first meeting between St Mirren and Queen of the South this season finished 3-1 to St Mirren at the Paisley 2021 Stadium after a first half strike from Cammy Smith and a double from Lewis Morgan. The first goal came on the 24th minute, when a Liam Smith's cross was knocked down by Gavin Reilly and Cammy Smith moved his feet well before his effort on goal trickled through the hands of Queens' keeper Alan Martin. It was a quick-fire double for the home team though, as three minutes later Lewis Morgan pounced on a ball that fell on the edge of the box after another good delivery from Liam Smith. The tricky winger then unleashed a half volley into the bottom right corner, giving the keeper no chance to put Saints 2-0 up. St Mirren put the game to bed not long after the restart, when Morgan's long range strike on the 54th minute found the bottom corner again, after Queens failed to clear a short corner. The Dumfries side did get a consolation goal on the 64th minute through a header at the back post from Jason Kerr.

The first game at Palmerston was a pivotal game for The Buddies, as they went down 2-0 after just six minutes. A goal from Stephen Dobbie 19 seconds into the game gave the Doonhamers the lead, but it was the second goal on the 6 minute mark from Chris Kane that really rocked Jack Ross' side. In a spirited effort though, the team managed to pull back the two goal deficit before half time through a brace from ex-Queens player Gavin Reilly. The comeback was complete on the 68th minute when Gary MacKenzie got a toe on the end of a Kyle Magennis corner to make the score 3-2 Saints.

The last match took place only a month ago in Paisley, when two goals in the first half were enough to seal all three points for the home team. Liam Smith got his first goal for the club on four minutes when his audacious 25 yard shot flew into the top corner. The second was added 28 minutes later, when Harry Davis converted a penalty after John Rankin handled the ball inside his own 18 yard box.

Jack Ross has confirmed that Harry Davis will not take part this weekend, due to a previous knee injury he sustained a year ago, so the manager does not want to risk him on Palmerston's artificial surface. As one drops out another comes in though, as Lewis Morgan has been back in training this week and will be fit to play after his bout of tonsillitis.

Skyview Capital extend contract as Club's Principal Sponsor

St Mirren Football Club are delighted to announce that Skyview Capital have extended their contract as the Club's Principal Sponsor. This will see Skyview's logo remain on the front of the team shirts for season 2018/19.

St Mirren Commercial Manager, Campbell Kennedy said: "To have a truly global brand such as Skyview Capital continue their sponsorship of the Club shows great recognition of what Jack and the squad have achieved on the park this season.

It is also a reflection of the hard work done off the park to take the Club forward after a challenging season last campaign. I'd like to thank Skyview for their continued sponsorship and give a special mention to Jim Hall for all his support.

Jim Hall, General Counsel for Skyview Capital added: "As we draw near to the end of the current season, it is inevitable that we should evaluate our sponsorship of the Club over the last year.

When we originally announced our agreement to become St Mirren’s Principal Sponsor, who would have thought this season would have been so successful when compared to last – both on the park and behind the scenes?

"Based on our experience across many different types of business, in many parts of the world, there is one universal truth – a major turnaround in fortunes in any enterprise does not come by accident.  Hard work, vision, dedication and perseverance of the entire organisation, from the top to the bottom, requires everyone to be pushing in the same direction through thick and thin.  It is no different at a football club.

"St Mirren epitomises those principles and richly deserves the successes it has enjoyed this year.  From Street Stuff, to support of the Paisley 2021 campaign, to the food bank collections, and the many other community activities in which it is involved – never mind what may go on every weekend – this is truly a community club and one in which Skyview Capital is extremely proud to support.

"It have been said many times over the last several months, but it bears repeating that the atmosphere within the Club, particularly from the supporters each week, home and away, has been nothing short of spectacular.  It is for this reason, and many others, that we very much look forward to continuing our support of St Mirren as Principal Sponsor next season and the new challenges it will bring!  Onwards and upwards -- COYS!!"

Ryan Flynn just wants to get over the line

New Saints star Ryan Flynn has had a good start to life in the black and white stripes, and is determined to see the club achieve success this season.

The 29 year-old midfielder started his third match for The Buddies at the weekend in a 2-0 victory over Dunfermline, and has drew plaudits from the fans for his impressive performance in the match.

He said: "I'm happy to make any sort of contribution, but the most important thing was the win. I thought from start to finish we dominated the game and didn't really feel under threat; then they had the chance in the second half and I was thinking 'surely not'.

"Apart from that, I thought to a man we were tremendous and it was a good three points but a great performance.

"We changed the shape a little bit, with Me, McGinn and Ginto (Magennis) in the middle of midfield. I thought we did well and allowed the full backs to get free and bomb forward.

"I thought throughout we were a good attacking threat and I'm just happy to do what ever the manager asks me to do really."

Jack Ross' side put in a confident performance against The Pars, after their two previous games didn't see Saints hit the heights they've been used to this season - despite winning one of the games 1-0 at home to Brechin. The game before was a 4-1 defeat against Livingston away from home, which saw Flynn score his first goal for Saints only two minutes into the match.

He continued: "The only one I really say is the Livingston one, a win's a win at the end of the day. It was a tricky game, and what I would say is we play a lot of good football, but the pitch against Brechin was dry and bobbly and you can really zip it about. The rain was lashing down on Saturday, but it helps us zip the ball about, create a lot of chances, getting balls wide and balls in the box.

"I suppose maybe if people were questioning us, we answered that, but within the dressing room obviously 1-0 against Brechin is still a good result and 2-0 against Dunfermline is even better."

"We just want to keep winning games and doing our job, I mean teams are trying to catch us, but that's not for us to worry about. We focus on working hard every day and we're looking forward to this game on Saturday and doing our job, and that's all we can do really. Keep it going, so far so good - the only blip has been Livingston."

Flynn joined the club in the January transfer window, and admits that since his first day in the job he could tell there was a good feeling around the dressing room.

He also admits that winning the league title would be one of his biggest achievements in football.

He said: "There's definitely buzz, I think there was buzz when I first walked in the door. You can tell by the way training is everyday that there's definitely a buzz and everyone's excited.

"People are looking forward to Saturdays, nobody is shying away from anything, everyone is desperate to play and desperate to play a part in hopefully getting promotion and winning the title, that's our aim - we've got nine games to go and that's all we've got to do.

"It would definitely be up there, I've never won anything. Obviously I won things at youth team level, but not a first team - I've nearly have. But I just want to play my part and help the team get over the line."

Fitzpatrick Way wins street name competition

Current St Mirren Chief Executive, Tony Fitzpatrick,  has been immortalised in the site where St Mirren Park used to be on Love Street, after a Council street name competition.

Renfrewshire Council, in association with the new housing project on the ground of the famous old stadium, ran an online competition to give fans a say on which of their St Mirren heroes should be awarded the honour of having a street permanently named after them.

Former captain and manager Fitzpatrick couldn't have been more honoured as he took another stroll around Love Street with the other winners.

He said: "It's really strange. It wasn't until today, when I went down to Love Street again that it really hit me. Of course, it was lovely when someone phoned to tell me they were going to do it, but to actually be standing in Love Street today, it's an incredible feeling.

"I remember I was coming up for 13 at the time, standing at the top of the terracing saying 'I want to play here' to then have a street named after you; it's a dream kids have - winning Scottish Cups, winning things that's always your dream, but to have a street named after you, especially my family name. My mum and dad are sadly not here now, but it's my dad's name, so to carry that on is fantastic.

The other winning street names were; Saints Street after the team itself, McGarry Terrace after former player Steven and his late father Tam. Yardley Avenue after the popular centre forward and Abercromby Avenue after Fitzpatrick's the 1987 Scottish Cup winning team mate.

"Fitzpatrick continued: "We were all talking about that when we were down at Love Street, it's brought back a lot of great memories. But, I think it's hit me today more than anything, I'm very emotional about it. When I'm gone - and I hope I've got a lot of years left - but when I'm gone, that is still going to be there, which is incredible."

"A lot of people don't know this, Billy was born in Paisley but moved to Maryhill and I was born in Possilpark, but Billy and I actually went to school together, we came through secondary school together and we've been really close friends.

"Today was special though, Billy was there, Mark Yardely was there, Steven McGarry's sisters were there and the Chairman was there. But me and Billy, I remember us with the Scottish Cup and the two of us taking it and running towards the fans together.

"And now we're standing together in Love Street with these street names. That's were it becomes emotional, because things start to come back and it is a special day.

"It's surreal. You never in a million years expect anything like that to happen in your life."
