Kilmarnock match will come down to who is better on the day says Stephen Robinson

Stephen Robinson says that Saints' recent Premier Sports Cup victory over Kilmarnock will have no bearing on tomorrow afternoon's trip to Rugby Park.

The Buddies defeated the Ayrshire side 5-3 on penalties after the two couldn't be separated following 120 minutes of action two weeks ago.

But the gaffer has stressed that there's little between the sides as they get set to meet again, this time in William Hill Premiership action.

"We go to Kilmarnock tomorrow and we know there’s nothing between the sides. There was nothing between us in the cup and nothing between us in the last two seasons. We know we have to do the same things time and time again.

Good teams do the simple things better than others and they continually do it. That’s what we have to reiterate."

"Stuart's [Kettlewell] done very well. They've got that cup game out their system with a fantastic result at Dundee United which is a difficult place to go to. I think it will be who comes out best on the day.

"We have to do the simple things better than them and if we can get a result there then we'll put it down as a very good start."

Stephen Robinson Pre-Kilmarnock

Saints travel to Kilmarnock on the back of a 1-0 win over Dundee at The SMiSA Stadium that moved the Buddies to third place in the William Hill Premiership and extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches.

The key to that good start, the manager says, has been a defensive solidity that has seen Saints concede the second fewest goals in the league this season.

"I think it’s been a really good start," he said. "We’re seven unbeaten and I think we’ve lost one game in 18.

"As a manager and staff we’re really pleased with what we’ve got but we feel we could have more points.

"A couple of the decisions we’ve made could have went better for us but when we look on paper, we had a really, really difficult start and people said we would struggle. We haven’t. We’ve shown we can compete with everybody in this league and we’re in the semi-final of a cup.

"But that’s where you have to be very careful. You can’t let any complacency set in, you can’t think it’ll automatically happen and you’ll turn up and win football matches.

Everything's built on solidity. If you're hard to break down and you're hard to beat, then it's a good starting point."

"We've made numerous changes. The goalkeeper, Shamal [George], has come in and been fantastic for us.

"We've created real assets in Jayden Richardson, Richard King – who'll go to the World Cup – Miguel Freckleton, added with the guys who were already there. The new players have settled in really well.

"I believe there's so much more to come from them. They're just getting their confidence."

The manager also gave an update on injured trio Mark O'Hara, Marcus Fraser and Keanu Baccus who all missed out last week.

"Marcus has made brilliant progress as we thought he'd be a real long one so credit to the medical staff. He's back running but won't be available for tomorrow.

"Mark has had an injection in his foot and it's a little bit slower but we're hopeful he'll be fit for after the international break.

"Keanu has surprised all of us. He's had his scan and we were a little bit wary of it. He may join in little bits and pieces of training and we'll see how he reacts to that before making a decision."
