Reaction: Jack Ross on Dundee friendly

Jack Ross gives his thoughts on the 3-1 friendly loss to Dundee at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.

Match Report: St Mirren 1-3 Dundee

St Mirren's only pre-season match at the Paisley 2021 Stadium ended in defeat at the hands of Dundee.

Gavin Reilly scored for Saints in his first appearance at the Paisley 2021 Stadium, but a first half double from Darren O'Dea and an early second half goal from Marcus Haber were enough to secure the visitors the win.

Saints started off in bright fashion and could have been 1-0 up after only 17 seconds.

New recruit Reilly was in a tigerish mood as he closed down Dundee goalkeeper Scott Bain early door, forcing the Scotland squad man to weakly clear the ball to Stephen McGinn. The captain took a touch before quickly surveying his options, sending a curling effort just by the post.

Bain made a world class stop just a few minutes later to deny Dale Hilson. Hilson - who joined the Buddies last week - burst through and smashed towards the middle of the goal with Bain just managing to get his fingertips to it.

Saints had started well but it was the visitors who took the lead with a little over 10 minutes played. Craig Samson's couldn't gather Scott Allan's corner and it was bundled over the line by Dee captain Darren O'Dea.

Bain was forced into work again in quick succession when good work from Reilly and then Morgan saw the keeper have to claw both efforts away.

Dundee doubled their lead on 38 minutes when O'Dea scored his second. A short corner found the Irish defender who rose above the Saints defence to power a strong header beyond Samson.

Half Time: St Mirren 0-2 Dundee

Dundee extended their lead three minutes after the break when Marcus Haber tucked home. Allan sent the ball across for the Canadian striker who finished from close range to put the game out of sight.

Reilly pulled a goal back for the Buddies on 55 minutes with a tidy finish. The striker played a neat one-two with Kyle Magennis before drilling beyond Bain just inside the box.

The game may have been billed as a friendly but it had a bit of an edge to it with Dundee's Lewis Spence going into the book for a foul on McGinn.

Try as they may Saints couldn't cut the deficit further with Morgan seeing a shot saved by Bain with a little over 10 minutes to go.

Full Time: St Mirren 1-3 Dundee

St Mirren: Samson (Stewart 72), Whyte (Trialist 76), MacKenzie, Baird (Buchanan 45), Stelios, Magennis (Stewart 72), McGinn, Hilson (Kirkpatrick 67), Smith (Todd 59), Morgan (Sutton 82), Reilly (MacPherson 76)

Saints Star Man: Gavin Reilly - the striker looked lively in his first appearance at the Paisley 2021 Stadium and capped it off with a neat goal in the second half.

Jack Ross Pre-Dundee

Jack Ross believes St Mirren's pre-season trip to Inverness went as good as it could have as they get set to face Dundee tonight at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.

The Buddies defeated Inverness Clachnacuddin and Nairn County 5-0 and 9-0 respectively.

The squad also took part in a team building exercise on Saturday as they went white water tubing.

It was a trip that the gaffer believes was important as new players integrate into the squad ahead of the new season.

It was good," he said.

"It was exactly what we wanted from it. The two games were great and the clubs were very accommodating and hospitable. It's a nice part of the world to go up and play and what the players gave me over the course of the two games was terrific.

"We wanted to get the players away together because we have new faces and get them to spend time together.

"I think it's a very important time of the year. I think you have to get into a way of playing - habit forming - and we are really pleased with how ruthless we've been in the two games.

"Of course we were expected to win the two games but we still did it in a very emphatic manner."

The manager admits he is excited to see the side in action again after their performances in the Highlands.

He emphasised that he wants the side to get back to playing the way they did at the tail end of last season.

He said. "It goes back to habit forming particularly from middle to front because we have to be ruthless.

"In the Clach game we got to the byline 10 times and our quality from wide areas wasn't brilliant in the first half.

"We might only get there twice in a league game this season because of how difficult the opposition might be, so when we get to these areas we have to be really ruthless and efficient.

"It's about standards, demands and habits all the time and they met them and couldn't have done any more over the two games.

"I don't criticise the players from middle to front for mistakes in that area of the pitch. I expect them to make mistakes at times but I also expect them to have an end product.

"That onus is placed on them but equally they know I'm a manager that will accept mistakes in it because I want them to be positive and bold in that area.

"That's how we played in the second half of last season and that's how we will continue to play.

"With the players we've brought in we have got really good pace and energy middle to front and I'm looking forward to seeing them again against Dundee.

"It's a really good game," he continued. "It'll be nice because some of our new players haven't played at our stadium and that will allow them to get a feel for the place.

"I think the way we finished last season supporters will look forward to seeing us back at the stadium as well. It'll be a difficult match but looking forward to it."

The Buddies then travel to Alloa on Saturday to face Ross' former club a week before the Betfred Cup gets underway.

It will also be the first time Saints have come up against former captain Jim Goodwin since the Irishman left the club in 2016.

He's more popular with the fans than I am!" the manager joked.

"He's a good guy. I obviously took him to Alloa and still keep in contact with him. I'm sure the supporters that travel through will give him a warm reception and a well deserved one for what he achieved at the club while he was a player.

"Saturday is a tough game as well. They are a top League One team who will probably feel frustrated they didn't get promoted.

"The good thing about going there now with the new pitch is that it is a really good place to play. I'm still friendly with a lot of people at the club and the manager so I look forward to going back there."

The manager has added seven new faces to the squad and while he does still expect some movement in and out he says nothing is set to happen soon.

There's nothing imminent," he said. "I've gone on record as saying I would probably like to strengthen in one or two areas.

"We may look at loans the other way also as there are some who may benefit from it that aren't going to play regularly for us.

"I'd think over the coming weeks we still may be some transition in the squad, but certainly the bulk of the squad is certainly in place."

St Mirren Open Day (July 9th)

The St Mirren Open Day will take place at the Paisley 2021 Stadium on Sunday July 9th from 11am.

There will be a range of activities in and around the stadium with a bouncy castle, face painters, the Street Stuff dance team, soccer skills, beat the goalie and much more.

The players will take to the field at 11:30am for a one hour training session following Saturday's friendly away to Alloa Athletic. They will then spend an hour meeting supporters and signing autographs.

The club shop will also be open on the day, while supporters thinking about joining the SMFC 1877 Supporters Club can have a look around the facility before deciding if they wish to sign up.

The Red car park will be closed on the day for activities so those attending are advised to park in the Black and White car park.

Chairman Gordon Scott confirmed in his latest update that the event is open to all so come along to the Paisley 2021 Stadium for a day of fun for all the family.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:
