Stephen Robinson praises 'excellent' Saints as we stretch unbeaten run

The manager was full of praise for his side and felt we should have won following our 1-1 draw with Hearts at the SMiSA Stadium.

Points shared as Saints make it 10 unbeaten at the SMiSA Stadium

St Mirren and Hearts played out an entertaining draw in Paisley that featured some late VAR drama as Saints extended their unbeaten home run to 10 matches.

Saints were well on top in the first half but only had one goal to show for their efforts, Ryan Strain's deflected free-kick giving them the lead inside five minutes. A goal early in the second half drew the visitors level, Robert Snodgrass' cross-come-shot deceiving everyone as it sailed into the net. That moment seemed to transform the sluggish Jambos who enjoyed the better of the second half.

It looked like the points would be shared but Saints sensed one last change when they were awarded a stoppage time free-kick. However, VAR intervened and eventually deemed that not only had Marcus Fraser committed the foul, but he had done so seriously enough to merit a red card. His team-mates were untroubled in what little time remained as the spoils were shared.

It was a much changed Saints team to the one that drew with Kilmarnock on Monday. Mark O'Hara swapped places on the naughty step with Ethan Erhahon, while Joe Shaughnessy replaced Declan Gallagher at the back. There were also starts for Alex Gogic and Alex Greive, Greg Kiltie and Eamonn Brophy having to make do with the bench. Lawrence Shankland, who spent two spells on loan in Paisley what feels like a lifetime ago, led the Jambos attack.

There was a minute's applause ahead of kick-off in honour of Saints legend Frank McGarvey, who sadly passed away on New Year's Day, before his old club took the lead after just a few minutes. When Keanu Baccus' charge forward was abruptly brought to a halt, it give Saints a free-kick in a dangerous position. Strain stepped up to take it and his effort deflected off Tony Sibbick in the the wall, sending it spinning past Zander Clark into the bottom corner.

Ryan Strain curls home a free-kick from 25 yards (Image: Allan Picken)

Unfortunately, Strain's afternoon wouldn't continue much longer. The wingback was clearly in a lot of pain when he went down with no one near him and he had to be replaced with Ryan Flynn. Just before that, we'd had the first VAR check of the afternoon to see if a Shankland shot had been blocked by an arm, with ref Chris Graham eventually told he could get on with things.

Despite the loss of Strain, Saints looked the more likely to score next. Some neat passing play gave Curtis Main a sight of goal and his dragged shot almost turned into a great pass to Greive, the Kiwi just unable to get on the end of it. A long throw from Shaughnessy then caused problems for the Hearts defence, who could only head it back out to the lurking Flynn. His fierce shot looked goalbound but it hit off Greive, who hadn't been able to get out the way, and went wide.

The Hearts fans had had little to get excited about but a Robert Snodgrass free-kick gave them some hope, however Kye Rowles couldn't connect properly and headed wide. Saints were appealing for a penalty when Baccus collected Main's tremendous cross before going down under a challenge from a Hearts defender, however Mr Graham decided the Aussie midfielder had gone down too easily and booked him for simulation instead. Main curled one over the bar a few minutes later before Greive had two great chances to extend the lead in stoppage time, first volleying over Flynn's cross then failing to connect with a great ball across goal from Main.

Kiltie replaced the booked Baccus at the break before some silky play from Main saw him sting the palms of Clark. The next ball into the Hearts box caused chaos – but not as much as a cross at the other end. The home defence dealt with the initial Jambos corner but the ball was worked back to Snodgross, whose delivery was missed by everyone (despite Shankland trying to claim it) and bounced into the net.

Mark O'Hara curled a free-kick wide after Kiltie was fouled by Rowles as Saints tried to restore their lead before Hearts almost went in front, Barrie McKay being given far too much time to find Alan Forrest who shot into the side netting. Hearts were enjoying plenty of space on the Saints left, Michael Smith delivering a tempting cross for Shankland but he headed straight at Trevor Carson. His next header went over the bar, at which point the expected VAR check for a possible handball by Gogic failed to materialise.

Saints had struggled since the equaliser but began to come into things, Main forcing his way through the Hearts defence before he stabbed a shot at Clark. The goalie denied Main again when he turned his shot away at the end of a slick counter attack before Kiltie shot wide from the edge of the box. Another counter saw Olutoyosi Olusanya – who had replaced Greive – sent away but he shot wildly over when he should perhaps have passed.

VAR had had a relatively quiet day, but that changed deep into stoppage time when Saints were awarded a free-kick. After a long wait, Mr Graham was eventually told to have a look at the monitor, which he duly did for a good few minutes before deciding his clear and obvious error had been not sending Marcus Fraser off.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

RCA given Help a Buddie tickets

This week the club distributed its latest batch of Help a Buddie match tickets.

Renfrewshire Council of Alcohol (RCA) were the recipients with some members looking forward to seeing the Saints play Heart of Midlothian in the cinch Premiership this Saturday in our first home match of 2023.

We visited Margaret, Maria and Rebekah at The RCA Centre in Paisley this week to deliver the tickets for Saturday's match. They were excited to receive the tickets and couldn’t wait to hand them out.

About the Renfrewshire Council of Alcohol

The Renfrewshire Council of Alcohol is a support centre providing services for people living with addiction in Renfrewshire.

RCA started 45 years ago to give older men who had given up drinking, a social life outside of alcohol. It has grown from its humble beginnings as a small support group, to now supporting both men and women who have been impacted by the effects of alcohol, drugs and gambling.

The RCA receive referrals from NHS but stay true to their original purpose by giving a helping hand and a listening ear to anyone who knocks at their door. The charity is one of only two organisations in Scotland who provide free gambling addiction support. They are no longer bound to the Renfrewshire area and provide support all over Scotland.

The charity allows people to meet others who are in similar situations and provides them with a social life through their support groups. Another example of the charity’s work is helping people who have lost their homes due to addiction become settled again.

RCA have big goals for 2023. They aim to expand and help as many people as they can. They have recently started up one on one support for those who are struggling with gambling and plan to develop this throughout the year.

Up Next: St Mirren v Hearts (7th Jan)

We are back at the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday for our first home match of 2023 as St Mirren host Hearts.

Stephen Robinson's side started the year with a hard-earned point following a 0-0 draw with Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Monday. Ethan Erhahon's early red card looked like Saints would be up against it, but the Buddies battled well and took a well deserved share of the spoils.

That draw made it five unbeaten for Saints and kept us in fifth place in the cinch Premiership.

Hearts will be coming into Saturday's match brimming with confidence following a 3-0 win over rivals Hibernian in the Edinburgh derby. Ex-Saint Lawrence Shankland netted twice for the Jambos as they also made it five unbeaten and extended their gap in third to five points over Saints and Aberdeen.

Robbie Neilson's side have won three and drawn two of their last five heading into Saturday's match.

Previous

This will be the first time either side has met this season with the original fixture postponed due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September.

Ironically, the two will meet again the following weekend with St Mirren travelling to Tynecastle for that rearranged fixture next Friday (13th Jan).

The last meeting of the sides was in the Scottish Cup quarter-final in March. Hearts took a 2-0 lead at Tynecastle, but a strike from Eamonn Brophy and our 2021/22 goal of the season from Connor Ronan brought Saints level. Ultimately, Hearts would go on to win 4-2.

Hearts also won all three league clashes last season winning 2-0 and 2-1 at the SMiSA Stadium and 2-0 again at Tynecastle.

Saints last victory over the Jambos was in March 2020 when Jon Obika scored the only goal in what proved to be the final day of the 2019/20 season.

The officials

Chris Graham takes charge of the match on Saturday. His assistants are David McGeachie and Gordon Crawford. Mike Roncone is fourth official.
