Goals from Ramsay and Sule see Saints pick up victory over Dundee
Saints overcame Dundee and the wind and rain of Storm Boelo to end their losing streak and pick up all three points in Paisley.
The Buddies led at the break thanks to an unlikely source. An outstanding pass from keeper Jacob Chapman found Eseosa Sule on the right wing and, in something of a role reversal, he saw Calvin Ramsay charging through the middle. The striker played a perfect pass to his team mate – whose only previous league goal was against the same opponents back in April 2022 – and his shot had just enough on it to find the net, despite the best efforts of visiting keeper Owen Goodman.
The scorer of the hosts' second goal just after the break wasn't anywhere near as surprising, Killian Phillips having all the time he needed to cross for the unmarked Sule to head home his second goal in as many games. Bradley pulled one back for Dundee – at the second time of asking – and the visitors thought they'd snatched a point in stoppage time through Ethan Hamilton only for his shot to rattle the bar and bounce to safety.
The Buddies were first to threaten on a horrible day in Paisley after Ryan Carr found Ismeal Kabia but his well hit shot straight at visiting keeper Owen Goodman. The horrendous wind and rain thanks to the arrival of Storm Boelo was making it difficult for both teams but the conditions couldn't stop Saints from taking the lead as the midway point of the first half approach. Goalie Jacob Chapman played a tremendous pass out to Eseosa Sule on the right and he found the unmarked Calvin Ramsay bursting through the middle, the on-loan Liverpool man tucking away his first Saints goal despite Goodman getting something on it. Ramsay almost managed to double his tally before the break from a Luke Thomas free-kick, Goodman unable to hold the wing-back's header thanks to the rain, with Marcus Fraser thwarted in his efforts to force home the loose ball.
With Saints in front, one of the main concerns was whether the pitch would be able to cope with the incessant rain. However, it was nearly Declan John who made the biggest splash as hostilities resumed, Goodman doing well to keep out the Welshman's fierce drive. Callum Jones then had Dundee's first real chance when the ball broke to him from a corner but, even allowing the for the gale force wind, his shot from the edge of the box was well off target. It would have been harsh on Saints if they'd conceded at that point and moments later they doubled their lead, Killian Phillips crossing for the unmarked Sule to head past Goodman.
Ashley Hay headed over as the visitors looked for a way back into match, Chapman then doing well to turn sub Charlie Reilly's shot around the post. Hay then should have halved the deficit from an Allan Forrest cross but somehow sent his header the wrong side of the post from close range when it looked easier to score. But the lifeline Dundee had been looking for duly arrived with less than 20 minutes to go, Bradley Fink latching onto Ryan Astley's through pass and while Chapman saved the first effort, he was unable to stop the striker slotting home the rebound.
That set up a tense finish but Jake Young, who had replaced Sule, could have settled the nerves when he pounced on a poor kickout from Goodman but he blazed his shot over the bar. Chapman comfortably dealt with shots from Alfie Harrison and Ethan Hamilton but the latter looked to have earned the visitors a point in stoppage time with a thumping effort that hammered off the crossbar and somehow bounced away from goal.
