Marcus Fraser named Club Captain
St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Marcus Fraser will take on the role of captain for season 2026/27.
The 32-year-old defender, who has been with Saints since July 2020, takes on armband permanently after serving as vice captain for the past three seasons.
Marcus will be assisted by Alex Gogic who becomes the new vice captain. The pair have almost 450 appearances for Saints combined and provide vast experience in their roles.
Speaking on picking up the captaincy, Marcus said: "I had a chat during the week with the manager and the coaching staff and they asked me if I would like to take the role on. I jumped at the chance and thanked them.
"Since they've been in from the end of the season until now, they've really backed me and shown faith in me. I’m happy and hopefully I can reward them with performances on the pitch as well as gelling all the new guys together.
"I'm really looking forward to it, but for me nothing really changes too much. I always try and carry that responsibility anyway.
"Alex [Gogic] is someone that you can rely on week in, week out. He's always going to be there and obviously I'm close to him as well off the pitch. I'm happy for him and I'm sure it'll be a good double act moving forward."
Saints manager Craig McLeish added: "We're delighted to have Marcus take on that role this season and Alex Gogic being vice-captain as well.
"It's a natural one, but when you're actually in the building and you see how Marcus runs the changing room and sets standards day in, day out, on and off the training pitch. Alex is similar.
"Even beyond that, we've got an experienced group of players with Declan John, with Keanu Baccus, with Liam Donnelly. We've got a really good core of experienced players that I can lean on at times, but having Marcus lead the group on and off the pitch, I'm delighted with that."
"I'm really looking forward to it, but for me nothing really changes too much. I always try and carry that responsibility anyway."
